New Staff
Paraeducator: Erica Karnes
Erica lives down the world's longest dirt road with her husband, toddler, and giant cat. With a background in freelance writing, and a couple of years spent teaming up with island orgs such as LIFRC and the library, she's pretty thrilled to have landed at LISD. Erica likes swimming in the sea, banter, autumnal everything, and terrible, awful reality television.
Special Education Substitute Teacher
Heather Hatch is a proud native to Washington State. She was born and raised in Olympia, WA on a sort of mini ranch with sheep, horses, rabbits, and a goat. She feels right at home on Lopez Island! Before, recently moving to Lopez Island, Heather lived in Arizona. She has also previously lived in Colorado, Georgia and Idaho. Some of her hobbies include kayaking, hiking, and cycling. Along with her son, Dallin, she recently completed a 62 mile bike tour in the small town of Richmond, Utah. Here is a picture of Heather (left) with Dallin (right) from her bike tour.
Bean Pickers Needed!
LIFE Program Harvest Party- This Saturday
The LIFE Program needs about an hour of your help.
This year Horse Drawn Farms grew two varieties of beans for the cafeteria. Yesterday, the Sust. Ag class made a trip to the farm and harvested about two-thirds of the beans - Whoop! Many thanks to them!
The remaining beans need to be harvested. Please consider joining us this Saturday, Oct 1 at 10 am.
An RSVP would be greatly appreciated, so we know how to plan. You can let me know if you're able to make it and I'll provide instructions.

L.I.F.E. Program Update
Th Sustainable Agriculture Practices (SAP) students have been busy harvesting produce for the cafeteria. In the past few weeks, they have learned practices to harvest the incredible bounty including green beans, peas, corn, tomatoes, basil cucumbers, tomatillos, summer squash, winter squash, apples and pears. This week they made a trip to harvest dry beans from Horse Drawn Farms. For several years, former gardener, Suzanne Berry, has coordinated dry bean planting with Horse Drawn due to the space limitations of our production garden on the school campus. After the beans have matured, harvest parties have done the work of picking all of the beans. SAP students were able to pick about two-thirds of the crop and they look forward to tasty treats from the kitchen.

Secondary News
Today marks mid-term 1. All grades will be updated in Canvas by Tuesday at midnnight. Students and parents can check the Canvas pages for each class and Edgenuity students can check their grade anytime they log in. The focus on mid-term is to encourage students to tune in to their academic performance and study habits thus far in the year and help them make mid-course adjustments with the goal of a strong finish at the end of Term 1.
Mid-term grades impact sports competition eligibility and other extra-curricular activity performances. If a student has a D or F in a class, they can still go to practice but cannot compete or perform until the grade is a C- or higher.

Housing Lopez Logo Design Contest
Housing Lopez is a local nonprofit organization building affordable rental housing. We know that many people have difficulty finding long term housing that they can afford and that many businesses can’t find staff due to a lack of housing opportunities. Our mission is to build homes that are affordable to people at different income levels. We’re about to start the development of 15 more affordable units in the Village and would love to have a brand new logo to add some pizzazz and professionalism to our website, project signs, letterhead, and other communications materials.
Housing Lopez just completed its first six homes in the Village, known as FishBay Cottages, next to the skate park. We are an all-volunteer board trying to make it easier for working folks to find a stable place to live on Lopez. Your help designing a new logo for us means a lot!
Requirements:
1. The logo must be in color and the winning designer will provide a black/white version as
well.
2. It must reproduce well at different sizes and come in a JPG @300 DPI
3. The Board of Housing Lopez will judge the submissions and select the winning logo.
4. The winner will receive a $250 cash prize.
Submissions at due by the end of the school day on October 31.
