Principal Note
PTO Trick or Treat
I want to thank all of the parents who have signed up to distribute candy at this afternoon’s PTO Trick or Treat event. We will be monitoring the weather closely, as the forecast currently predicts rain. Should we need to cancel the event, I will communicate via automated phone call, text, and email.
The event is currently scheduled for 5:00-6:00, and students are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes and be ready for an hour of fun. There will be a lot of candy to be had, as well as Halloween themed music, etc. We are not yet holding PTO events in the building, so the entirety of the event will be outdoors.
I hope Mother Nature cooperates, as the PTO planned a fun, family-themed event that allows students to see their peers dressed up in advance of the big day on Sunday!
1st Trimester Report Cards
Next Friday, November 5th marks the end of the first trimester. Report Cards will be available on Home Access Center the morning of November 17th. Report Cards are a communicate tool used to inform students and parents about student progress on grade-level standards. This tool speaks to the proficiency levels of students based on classroom informal and formal assessments, as well as identifying strengths and areas for growth in behaviors that affect learning, such as showing respect for self and others, working cooperatively, using time productively, etc.
Trimesters provide natural stopping and starting points. Teachers use these natural breaks for reflection and goal setting for students. You are offered to do the same. Engaging with students about what they enjoy about school where they feel confident, where they feel challenged, and where they have opportunities to grow in the trimester ahead are great ways to involve students in their learning.
Clarification Regarding Organic Life Purchases
As you are aware, the Federal School Lunch Program offers free lunch and breakfast to all students. However, the program does not cover a la carte items, such as isolated orders of milk, water, or juice. Therefore, if your child does not order a lunch, but orders juice, milk, or water only, they need to have money on their Push Coin account. To check your Push Coin balance, or add money to your account, please refer to the link below for information:
Donations to Support Munhall Families
Want to help families in need in the Munhall community through a virtual food drive? I am pleased to announce a partnership with Kids Lift, which is a charity branch of Premium Service Brands, which is a parent company to several area home service businesses. Kids Lift works with organizations in the community to ensure donations go directly to those in the community would who benefit.
Below you will find a link to a wish list of food items for our families who may benefit from support. Any items purchased will be shipped directly to Munhall so we can oversee the products are distributed to our families. Below you will find a link to the wish list, as well as the Kids Lift website:
Masks/Face Coverings
This is a friendly reminder that your child may benefit from coming to school with multiple masks each day. Our school is currently going through disposable masks at an extremely fast rate due to the frequency with which students are forgetting masks.
CogAT Testing for 3rd and 5th Grade Students
Beginning the week of November 8th our 3rd and 5th grade students will participate in CogAT Testing. Next week we will communicate a specific testing schedule so parents are aware. Please see information below regarding the test itself.
Dear Parent:
Between November 8 and November 19, 2021, 3rd and 5th graders will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The test consists of three short sections, 90 minutes of total test time, broken into nine 10-minute tests. Your school will have a more specific schedule of days and times for your child.
The CogAT is not an achievement test. Instead, it measures a student’s verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning abilities which can facilitate their learning and problem-solving. The scores may be used to adapt instruction and programs to the needs and abilities of students. Information is also used as a piece of information for student programming such as Academically Talented. For more information on Academically Talented students click here: https://district.d303.org/programs/academically-talented. Student results will be sent home in December. We appreciate your support of our academic programs and your partnership in facilitating your child’s learning.
In-person Students
If your child is attending school in-person, they will take it in school. Your building principal will communicate the exact dates for testing.
Remote Students
If your child is a remote student, you have the opportunity to test at school during the testing window. The CogAT must be taken in-person. There are no remote options. If you do not wish for your child to be in a school at this time to take the CogAT, there will be optional CogAT dates offered during the summer of 2022. However, students can only take the CogAT once every nine months.
Please feel free to contact your building principal or one of the people below if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Cindy Ruesch
