Principal's Challenge Updates and iReady
We had a great January with our two Principal Challenges in iReady Math and iReady Reading. Those students who earned popcorn and/or hot chocolate surely enjoyed their special treat!! Here is some interesting facts about these challenges:
Reading
231 kids beat the challenge at least 1 week
69 kids beat the challenge all 4 weeks
Math
244 kids beat the challenge at least 1 week
73 kids beat the challenge all 4 weeks
Classes with the most combined lessons passed:
K-2 Mrs. Wible with 694 lessons
3-5 Mrs. Maag with 442 lessons
Our new principal challenge is underway! This challenge is focused on READING ONLY!
This next challenge began February 17th and will end March 10th. Students are working toward an ice-cream party (non dairy ice cream will be provided to students who are dairy free).
Beat the challenge 1 week: ice cream
Beat the challenge 2 weeks: ice cream with chocolate syrup
Beat the challenge 3 weeks: ice cream with chocolate syrup and sprinkles
Beat the challenge 4 weeks: ice cream with chocolate syrup, sprinkles and chocolate chips
Students are working hard on this challenge. Please remember that they can work on iReady reading at home as well. They must complete at least 45 minutes AND pass 2 lessons each week to earn that week's topping. Best of all, completing the iReady lessons will help your child continue to grow as a reader!

Inspiring Ideas with Miss T
What are the Benefits to Building a Strong Vocabulary?
Helps increase a child’s chance for academic success
Supports comprehension of what is read, viewed or discussed
A child entering kindergarten knows around 10,000 words. A child’s vocabulary increases at a rate of 3,000-4,000 words per year. We learn about 25 to 50 percent of words every year through reading. Keep pulling those books out at night to read together!
Developing Vocabulary at Home
Provide a child-friendly definition of the new word
Significant means something that is really, really important
Provide a child-friendly example that makes sense within their daily lives
The most significant part of our day was when we stopped for gas. We almost ran out!
Keep the new word active within your home.
What is something that is significant to you? Yes! Our pets are significant to us. They are our family.
Other Tips and Tricks
Use actions, gestures or facial expressions to help your child understand the meaning of new word
Provide multiple opportunities to learn and hear new words
Help foster curiosity for new words

In Tune with Attendance and Safety with Mr. Perlich
Attendance –
Attendance is an important part of your child’s education. When they are present, they have the best chance of learning and making connections. Virtual days and eLearning also count towards attendance. Make sure they are logging into Teams during their meetings and getting the work done to be counted present. Please understand that our protocol at East Noble is to send out attendance letters and make phone calls for a certain number of absences. We understand that a doctor’s visit is not always needed but it does help when you start having multiple absences. Please help us by understanding the protocol and helping us get your child to school.
Tardies can have the same impact as an absence. Starting the day off late is not helpful to the student. Getting to school on time allows the student to start the day off with the rest of the class and can have a big impact on how the day goes for them.
Below is the attendance protocol.
Safety –
In the month of February, we practiced a fire drill, shelter in place, lockdown, and bus evacuations. These drills are to help us prepare for the worst case scenario. Being able to practice these will help us if the real emergency should arise and not panic. The month of March will see us practicing the following drills:
- Fire drill
- Lockdown/Shelter in place drill
As you can tell by looking at the list, safety is an important part of preparing our students and staff in case of an emergency. Talking to your students about safety will help them be prepared for an actual emergency. Stress to them not to panic and react to each situation with confidence and calmness.
If you should have any questions regarding attendance or safety, please contact me at the school or by email at jperlich@eastnoble.net.
The Nurses Nook
Hello Wildcat families! We are now entering the month of March!!! Wow… this year is flying by!!
There has been a large increase in the number of cases of pink eye, not just at North Side, but in all of Noble county. Here is some information from the CDC (Preventing Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis) | CDC) about reducing the spread of conjunctivitis (pink eye):
If you have conjunctivitis, you can help limit its spread to other people by following these steps:
- Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Wash them especially well before and after cleaning, or applying eye drops or ointment to, your infected eye. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands.
- Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. This can worsen the condition or spread it to your other eye.
- With clean hands, wash any discharge from around your eye(s) several times a day using a clean, wet washcloth or fresh cotton ball. Throw away cotton balls after use, and wash used washcloths with hot water and detergent, then wash your hands again with soap and warm water.
- Do not use the same eye drop dispenser/bottle for your infected and non-infected eyes.
- Wash pillowcases, sheets, washcloths, and towels often in hot water and detergent; wash your hands after handling such items.
- Stop wearing contact lenses until your eye doctor says it’s okay to start wearing them again.
- Clean eyeglasses, being careful not to contaminate items (like hand towels) that might be shared by other people.
- Clean, store, and replace your contact lenses as instructed by your eye doctor.
- Do not share personal items, such as pillows, washcloths, towels, eye drops, eye or face makeup, makeup brushes, contact lenses, contact lens storage cases, or eyeglasses.
- Do not use swimming pools.
If you are around someone with conjunctivitis, you can reduce your risk of infection by following these steps:
- Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and warm water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands.
- Wash your hands after contact with an infected person or items he or she uses; for example, wash your hands after applying eye drops or ointment to an infected person’s eye(s) or after putting their bed linens in the washing machine.
- Avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands.
- Do not share items used by an infected person; for example, do not share pillows, washcloths, towels, eye drops, eye or face makeup, makeup brushes, contact lenses, contact lens storage cases, or eyeglasses.
I encourage you to take the time to talk with your child about ways to reduce the spread of pink eye AND practicing good hand washing to prevent the spread of all illnesses.
[TIP: Good hand washing includes washing your hands WITH soap with 20 seconds – this is approximately how long it takes to sing Happy Birthday. I like to have the kids practice washing their hands and singing Happy Birthday 😊]
Upcoming clinics:
- “School Smiles,” the in-school dentist, will be at North Side Elementary on Thursday, March 16, 2023. They provide dental exams and restorative care to your child right at school! Your child will not be seen by the dentist unless they have a signed consent form. You can register online at www.schoolsmiles.com/student-signup. Or, if you would like form sent home with your child, please contact me at 260-347-1354 or waumsbaugh@eastnoble.net.
- The Noble County Health Department has offered to come to North Side on March 10, 2023 to offer a clinic for routine immunizations. What does this mean? If your child is not up to date on their routine – school required immunizations, The Noble County Health Department will come to North Side on March 10th to administer these vaccinations and save you the hassle of scheduling an appointment! No worries, absolutely no immunizations will be administered without parental consent. If you are interested in having your child receive these routine immunizations at school, please contact me for further information.
Friendly reminders:
- Your child must be fever-free, without fever-reducing medication, for 24 hours before returning to school. The same applies to vomiting and diarrhea.
- Please send a change of clothes in your child’s backpack for those occasional accidents or spills. I will do my best to provide your child with a change of clothes, but if I do not have the appropriate size, I will have to call home and ask for a change of clothes.
- If your child has clothes that they have outgrown, I am always accepting clothing donations!! This is how I keep my “extra clothes” stocked. I am always in need of pants and underwear, sizes 6-12. Don’t worry, clothes are always washed before I give them to students 😊

Nutrition Notice with Mrs. Yates
Our end of the month birthday cake is a hit! Students are enjoying it. Students are really enjoying the new entrees as well, such as potato joes. It is wonderful to see the students willing to try new things and loving it! They even tell those adults monitoring the cafeteria to tell the cooks how much they love the food! Such a great thing to hear!
Please remember that we serve breakfast daily at North Side, the doors open at 7:30 a.m. If you would like your child to eat breakfast at school, please do your best to have them at school close to 7:30 so they have plenty of time to eat.
