LION ROAR
Message from Your Principal
Dear Lion,
Unbelievable! Difficult to believe that there are 9 weeks of school remaining in this school year. March 16th marked 1 year since the COVID-19 school closure and we have all moved forward, adjusted, learned, re-adjusted, and learned some more. It has been a year of awe, challenges, growth and changes, yet here we are. I am proud that despite difficulty, we are figuring it out. Finding solutions. So let us keep finding solutions. Finding solutions is a skill set that will support you in conquering the world. Please read on for opportunities and information. While we currently do not have a return back to campus date, do know that we are in the process of collecting data to determine next steps. More information to come and I thank you and your family for being patient and understanding during these times. We have an upcoming school-wide virtual meeting next week to share news and updates and I look forward to "seeing" you there. In the meantime, take advantage of the opportunities (Coding classes, travel abroad, grade improvement, and more) presented to you and let's continue to strive for a successful and a feel-great rest of the year.
Let's WIN.
Your Principal,
Ms.Gonzalez

Self-Mastery - Unlocking Your Full Potential
Benefits of Walking for Your Body
The benefits of walking for health are well researched and widely known. Remember the last time you went for a walk and how energized and uplifted you felt. It was awesome, yes?
You know that walking is good for you. No matter what time of the day, any time (before curfew) is an ideal time to go walking, it’s always the right time to get out there and reap the benefits of walking for your body, mind, and soul.
1. Improve Balance And Coordination. Walking over varied terrain – on sidewalks, stony paths, grassy hills – increases your sense of balance and coordination. Walking requires small adjustments to maintain your balance: (1) adjusting your pace, (2) moving your head left and right, up and down, to see where you’re going, (3) turning and twisting your body as you adjust to the terrain.
2. Reduce Joint Pain. A daily walk helps reduce inflammation and stiffness in your joints.
3. Get Healthy. Even though walking is a low impact form of exercise it builds muscles, which strengthens your bones too. If you’re just starting out, make it a comfortable pace. You should be able to talk easily as you’re walking. As you get more fit, you can increase the intensity by alternating short bursts of high intensity walking (faster speed or uphill walks) interspersed with periods of low intensity walking.
4. Memory Booster. In a study done at the University of British Columbia, researchers found that regular aerobic exercise can boost the size of your hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for verbal memory and learning. Activity in your body increases activity in your brain.
5. Mood Enhancer. No matter how fast or slow you walk, walking gets you outside and in the fresh air. This alone will make you feel better as your body absorbs the oxygen and sunshine (Vitamin D!). Walking releases endorphins that help lift your mood and can even reduce depression. It also reduces the level of cortisol in your body, a hormone that’s linked to causing stress. Walking improves self-perception and self-esteem, mood and sleep quality, and it reduces stress, anxiety, and fatigue.
6. Healing. In a recent study led by Dr. Simon Rosenbaum results suggest that focusing on your body and how it feels as you walk, can actually help your nervous system become unstuck. Participants paid close attention to their bodies: the physical sensations in their joints and muscles, even how they felt inside. The study found that symptoms from from depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and stress were reduced by the time spent walking.
People That Changed the World
Mari Copeny
Activist
Mari Copeny lives in Flint, Michigan. She was eight in 2014 when the city switched its water source to the polluted Flint River without properly treating the water. As a result, the water available to consumers was full of bacteria and industrial waste, including high levels of lead. Copeny sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama asking for help, even though, as she wrote in the letter, “My mom said chances are you will be too busy with more important things.” To her surprise, the president responded by meeting Copeny in Flint, authorizing $100 million for a cleanup campaign, and drawing national attention to the crisis. Copeny later became a representative of the United Nations Girl Up Initiative and raised half a million dollars to purchase more than 15,000 backpacks for Flint schoolchildren. She also launched an anti-bullying campaign and distributed more than a million bottles of water to Flint residents. Copeny’s website tells the world that she intends to be president of the United States one day, and no one should be surprised if that comes true.
