Delran High School Broadcast
February 9, 2024
DELRAN HIGH SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
Delran High School, an inclusive learning community, provides educational opportunities for intellectual development while valuing the importance of cultural diversity and tradition.
A Message from Mr. Finkle!
Hello DHS Community!
Well, it's been a busy couple of weeks since I last sent out a Broadcast! As many of you heard, we had an internet outage that left all students off of the network for the entire day! We have recovered and will never take Wi-Fi for granted ever again!
This week we had two assemblies, one on SmartPass and the second for our Freshmen - Juniors on Course Selection for next year!
SmartPass is an electronic pass system that uses the Chromebooks to issue a student pass that has also been in use at DMS for two years. We did this for several reasons, most importantly, controlling the number of students in an area at a time. In conjunction with this, we have also locked the bathrooms between periods to do the same. Vaping is an epidemic with today's high school students and we, as a school, cannot turn a blind eye to the situation. Students who wanted to use the bathroom felt uneasy as the bathrooms were crowded with students vaping. In addition, we have had a growing amount of damage in the bathrooms and now we have a way of tracking who was in the bathroom to narrow down those responsible. For those who know me, this is certainly the last thing that I want to do; however, when it comes to the safety of our students, that will always be the primary variable in my decision-making. I can say that as much as the students were unhappy with the culture change, there have been very few issues to date.
In addition, all students must use their school-issued ID to access the bathrooms during school hours. They need their ID to sign-out of lunch to use the restroom or to visit the media center. They also need these IDs in the main office to sign-in late and to leave early. These IDs are very expensive and the replacement cost is $10. We ask that you reenforce this with your child at home.
Yesterday, I held meetings with our Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors regarding course selection for next year. I sent an email on Monday outlining the placement process as well as the waiver process. You can find all documents related to scheduling for the 2024-25 school year on the Program of Studies/Scheduling Documents page of our website. All students will meet with their counselors between Tuesday, February 13th and Spring Break. Please be patient as they need to meet with over 200 students each during this time.
Senior Trip Parent Meeting
There will be a mandatory parent meeting on Thursday, February 15th for senior parents who will be attending the class trip. The meeting will begin promptly at 7:00 in the Performing Arts Center.

Please be reminded that the students will have next Friday, February 16th and Monday, February 19th off for President's Day Weekend!

FROM THE CLASSROOMS
English
In no particular order: Love, insult, praise, misery, admiration, prejudice, longing, fighting, infatuation, death, revelry, blood, happiness, murder, renewal, betrayal, sacrifice, and acceptance. You guessed it! Miss Schreiner and Mrs. Hayes' College Prep English classes are reading Romeo and Juliet. The students can insult you using Shakespeare's taunts, and they can read his speeches in iambic pentameter. By the end, they will see that the oft touted "Greatest Love Story of All Time" is anything but!
What classes averaged 90 and 88 on their most recent vocabulary quizzes? Miss Schreiner and Mrs. Hayes' students learned how to make their own Quizlets to prepare for their most recent quiz, and it shows in the improved scores. This is a tool the students will be able to use on material in most of their other subjects to make learning easier and a little more fun. It's already the second week of February, so in Canvas, students discussed their progress toward their Quarter 3 goals and any New Year's Resolutions they made.
Mx. Obst’s CP Forms of Literature and Composition classes are culminating our Coming of Age Unit with a literary analysis essay that focuses on how Scout’s maturation in To Kill a Mockingbird builds themes.
Mx. Obst’s Honors British Literature classes have begun to read Hamlet and created original hand-drawn character maps that show the relationships between characters in the play.
World Language
In Ms. Calderon’s Honor's Spanish II, we are comparing and contrasting Delran to local cities like Philly and Ocean City. We are incorporating comparisons statements we already knew with new vocabulary about cities. We began with a writing assignment and we are going to do speaking activities on Friday.
Mrs. Zamichieli’s French II students are designing their dream home using French vocabulary.
- Spanish CP4 students just completed their Shark Tank projects on the environment. Classes invited "guest sharks" (teachers) to come hear the pitches on their products.
Technology
DIY Class
Students worked together to create one of kind custom soap designs in our DIY classes.
Production Design 2
Students designed textile graphics to be printed on our vinyl cutter to make custom t-shirts.

Children who do not have lawful presence in the U.S., live in New Jersey, and whose family income qualifies are eligible to receive NJ FamilyCare health care coverage. NJ FamilyCare provides a variety of health services, such as doctor/specialist visits, mental health, vision, dental, vaccinations, and a number of other benefits to keep children healthy. To find out more about Cover All Kids, please visit nj.gov/coverallkids to learn more.
Course selection for the 2024-2024 school year is underway. Students can access needed materials online. Counselors will begin individual meetings with students on February 13th. Counselors will meet with students in the Class of 2027, then 2026, then 2025 with the goal of meeting all students by late March. Scheduling is not first come, first served, meaning there is no rush to be seen first and no impact to being seen last. We appreciate your patience.
Please note that waivers are due February 28th without exception. That means that students should NOT wait to meet with the counselor to submit any waivers. Waivers can be picked up and returned in the Guidance Office.

Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA): NOW AVAILABLE
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a necessary form for any student seeking financial assistance to further their education in the 2024-2025 school year, is now available on a limited basis.
Students are strongly encouraged to actively manage their various application portals for school-specific announcements and direction related to financial aid.
HESSA
The 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is Now Available
Due to federal processing delays this year, HESAA (and colleges/universities) will not receive students’ data for several more weeks. This will directly impact our work here at HESAA in processing state aid, but please be assured that we are monitoring the situation continuously and are prepared to load student award eligibility into NJFAMS as quickly as possible upon receipt of this data.
Please note that NJ Dreamers will be able to access the NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application by the end of January. This application will again be available in NJFAMS.
To help support students and their families, HESAA has expanded our calendar of free webinars to support participants in understanding and completing the application process.

Hard copies of this publication are available for pick up in the Guidance Office. An electronic version can be found here.
Prospective College Athletes

Scholarship in the Spotlight
Mason Williams was an exemplary Delran High School student who appreciated the need for education and training even as he lamented the inequities that exist in the traditional educational system. He strongly believed that all students, regardless of current academic standing, should be given access to the necessary tools, resources and support needed in order to be successful in school and life.
It is in this spirit that The Mason Williams’ Memorial Scholarship was created. The foundation will provide financial support to three graduating seniors to use for attendance at a reputable two-year or 4-year college or trade school.
Applications are due by March 17, 2024.
NJ Association for College Admission Counseling
Virtual College Exploration is for all New Jersey Students. Explore this website as a great resource with over 150 recorded webinars!!
All students in 10th through 12th grades have an account, please see the Guidance Department Website for additional information.

SPECTATOR’S CODE (Family & Friends)
The larger school community has an interest and investment in the success of our Athletic Program. These adults play a key role in reinforcing the educational goals of our program. Therefore, we expect these important program supporters to do the following:
- Be a positive role model through their behavior at athletic contests.
- Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators, and support groups.
- Be respectful of all officials’ decisions.
- Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team.
- Praise student-athletes in their attempt to improve themselves as students, as athletes, and as people.
- Gain an understanding and appreciation for the rules of the sport.

- Remember that admission to a school athletic event is a privilege to observe the contest.
If you are unable to attend home DHS contests, the main gym possesses a Pixellot camera that allows you to live stream contests from the comfort of your own home or any internet device. Use the following website in order to subscribe to the NFHS Network, https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/delran-high-school-delran-nj. In order to watch the games live, you must subscribe. It is a paid streaming service. The cost is $11.99 per month which allows you to watch all home basketball games and wrestling matches, as well as any away contests by schools who also use the Pixellot system.
