2024 STEM/MAKER'S FAIRE
Greetings Parents, Guardians, & Scholars,
I’m so excited to announce the start of our 2024 STEM/Maker's Faire process. Scholars will need to decide which process they want to follow. The end result of these processes looks different. I advise you to work together to choose the best fit for your interests and budget. Please note that although your child's teacher will be doing check-ins, the majority of the work is expected to be done at home.
If your scholar chooses to follow the STEM Process they will use the scientific method to guide them through an experiment. Their experiment will have them identify a question to ask, do background research, construct a hypothesis, test the hypothesis by doing the experiment, analyze the data, draw a conclusion, and report the results.
The Maker’s Faire process guides scholars through the engineering design process (or engineering method). This process offers similar steps for students working on engineering projects and inventions. Engineering design projects don't have a hypothesis to test. Instead, they have a challenge or problem that needs to be solved and, often, a set of design constraints that need to be considered when brainstorming and prototyping solutions. At the end of this process, your scholar would’ve built a working prototype of their idea.
With everything going on in the world I want all our scholars to take this time to be inspired to investigate their wonders, build new ideas, and experiment with their curiosity. Grades 6-12th will be required to participate. Review the timeline and mark your calendars. To make sure you receive feedback promptly, late work will not be accepted, please strive to meet all submission deadlines. Your scholar's science teacher will review all requirements and rubrics and post additional information on their canvas pages.
All dates may be subject to change, the most up-to-date changes will be posted on the newsletter and on Canvas. I look forward to seeing everyone's hard work at the 2024 STEM/Maker's Faire!
Warm Regards,
Miss Hamilton
Science Department Chair

SATURDAY ACADEMY
Dear CMIT South Family,
I hope this message finds you well. I am excited to announce that Saturday Academy officially began on October 14th, and we are thrilled to have your child/children participate with us. As part of our commitment to providing students with quality educational experiences, we will have two sessions to choose from, just like in previous years. The first session will run from 9:00 AM-10:40 AM, and the second session will run from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM. Of course, you are welcome to choose both sessions.
So, what do we offer? Our Saturday Academy provides an optional small group setting to assist our students in core classes such as English, Math, AP Class Support, and SAT Prep. During these sessions, we will help with homework and provide additional skills and practice in RELA and Math. This year, we are excited to introduce science help every week, along with a once-a-month science lab. Please note that to participate in the labs, there will be a sign-up Genius, as we must limit the number of students participating for safety reasons. We reserve the right to have some discretion in those who participate in the labs again for safety reasons. October 28, 2023 will be a science lab day. Please use this link to sign up to participate. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050E48A8AD23A1F94-45412223-science
Wondering about the procedure? Your scholars will be dropped off and picked up on the same side as normal drop-offs and pick-ups. There will be a sign outside of the door that we will utilize each Saturday. This is the only door that students will use each week. I will be waiting for your scholar to sign in and direct them to where they need to go.
What do I need from you and your scholar? I need your scholar to know what he/she needs assistance with. Upon entering, the first questions I will ask them are: What grade are you in, and what do you need help with today? Are you staying for both sessions?
I need you as parents/guardians to provide your scholar with a snack if possible if they plan to stay for both sessions because that is a long time without something to eat. I will try to have a snack available each Saturday, but it may not be what they want. Most importantly, I need you to respect our time together. We are providing a service, but we also have families to get home to on the weekends. Please pick up your child on time.
Lastly, use the link below to register your child.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We look forward to helping your child/children receive additional support.
Sincerely,
Ms. Jones

VOLLEYBALL CLUB INFORMATION FOR ALL AGES
If you are looking for some volleyball options for your student, please check out the links, flyers, and posts below for clubs in the area. Club volleyball is the best way for players to improve their skills and learn the game of volleyball.
Middle school students should strongly consider playing if they hope to play once they get to high school. High school players should consider playing to strengthen and improve their skills before next season. Also, anyone hoping to play in college should play club, as most college coaches recruit during the club season.
Club tryouts are happening at the start of November for most clubs, and many clubs have teams for both girls and boys. If you aren't ready or can't commit to club volleyball just yet, please still take note of the websites, as some clubs offer clinics throughout the year that could be beneficial for players as well.
The Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association (CHRVA) has compiled a spreadsheet of clubs in our region. The sheet includes each club's updated tryout dates, website, and contact information should you have any questions. Click the link below to access the information.

To that end, they are elated to share The CLF TEACH Service Grant Application for eligible 2024 graduating seniors, or CLF alumni.
Once the grant applications have been received, the Application Review Committee will select recipients for the one-time $10,000 grant. Recipients will agree to serve in a teaching capacity at any of our Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation Schools for one year to repay the $10,000 grant (1:1). If a grant recipient does not teach at one of our seven schools immediately upon graduation from the college or university, the grant will become a loan, repayable with interest.
If you are interested, the deadline for submitting applications is December 15, 2023.
