Dear Lake Grove Families,

It's hard to believe that next week will be our last full week of school this year!

We have shared so many experiences this year that have helped us grow into the people we are now. I hope that you will take some time to reflect and celebrate with your children about the growth they've made this year.

We work to ensure that our students feel happy at school and are proud of their learning. Sometimes we have moments that are more challenging. Learning isn't always comfortable - whether it's tackling new academic material or learning how to navigate sharing space with people who may seem different than we are. I am proud when I reflect on how together we have weathered these challenging moments, shared in joyous learning opportunities, enjoyed a range of fun activities, and celebrated our progress.

We're looking forward to more opportunities to celebrate together next week with field day on Wednesday, class parties throughout the week, and the celebration for 5th grade students and guardians at 1:45 on Friday. We hope to see you there.

The LOSD CARES virtual workshop about social media -- Helping Your Child Navigate Our Digital World -- was a success. A recording of the session and supporting materials are posted on the district website under LOSD CARES.

To support students’ social, emotional, and physical health, LOSD CARES invited Justine Kovak, a clinical outreach specialist with the Children's Center, to discuss how to support children developing and growing in our digital world, particularly about living with pervasive social media.

LOSD CARES is a connection and resilience education series hosted by a district team of counselors, social workers, and psychologists to provide our families with access to mental health resources.

Join us June 5th for our continuing young readers series, Storytime, hosted by Katharine Phelps. Please share this invite with your neighbors and family. This may be one of the few places where your child can participate in a BIPOC reading group.

Summer Resources 2023

An optional opportunity to becoming familiar with LOJ is the LOJ 6th Grade Success Class. This is a 2-day workshop designed for incoming 6th graders. The objective of this workshop is to teach students strategies and tips to help navigate the unfamiliar world of middle school and to help ease their transition to middle school.

The workshop will focus on the following:

• How to communicate with teachers and be their best advocate!

• Accessing their web grades

• Accessing the teacher websites

• Accessing online homework

• Study skills and Organization tools to aid with school success

• Managing the NEW Middle level schedule

• Learning how to use lockers

• Learning how to navigate a building with 7th and 8th graders.

I'd like to remind students and parents that students should not be bringing personal belongings to school. We have seen an increase in gaming devices, smart watches, and other toys. If there is a need to bring these things, they need to stay in students' backpacks.

Here is the policy from the Elementary Student and Family Manual.

Personal Possessions: Students will assume responsibility for any items they bring to school. We have no way to safeguard items of real or personal value. The only time students should bring toys, games, sports and playground equipment, etc. to school is when their teacher instructs them to do so (for show and tell or other established purposes). Cell phones are not to be used during school hours, including during recess. Cell phone usage includes sending and receiving calls or text messages and taking pictures.

Smart Start is an opportunity specifically for our students with 504s and IEPs, and their parents and guardians, to make introductions and connect with their teachers and to feel prepared and welcomed for the start of school. Smart Start is in person on Thursday, Aug. 31,12:30-2:30 p.m.

Teachers will be familiar with your student’s plan and accommodations. To help get to know your students, please complete the attached one-page profile or create one on your own ahead of time, and give it to the teacher at the Smart Start introduction.

Also, to assist in your family’s preparation for the new school year use the Smart Start checklist for parents and guardians of students with 504s and IEPs.

We welcome all families to come drop off school supplies, see your classroom, and socialize on the playground between 2:30-3:30 pm on Thursday August 31.

Beginning April 28, LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2023-24 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. This benefits both families and schools by:

• Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your address or contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.

• Confirming parent email addresses for Google Classroom and other applications to participate in your student's learning.

• Enabling distribution of key information in the district's K-12 Family Handbook.

If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, contact your student's school. For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website or contact your student's school.

Medication Pick Up

Absolutely ALL medications, prescription and over the counter, left in the health room must be picked up by the end of the school day, June 12th, 2023. Only parents and guardians may collect the medications. They cannot be sent home with students. Medication Authorization Forms for next year are available on the district web page.

Immunizations for Next Year

Please review the OHA requirements and information on required immunizations for students. Please make arrangements to complete immunizations and update Synergy over the summer to avoid exclusion in 2024.

LO Girls Youth Basketball Camps: Girls 3rd-8th grade. Join the LO high school girls basketball coaches for a great week of basketball action! Come grow as a player through drills, contests, scrimmages, team activities, and more! Players will be grouped by similar ages and abilities. All players will receive a camp t-shirt. Safe Oregon, Ways to Report Incidents

Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal and maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources. SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools. Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense. https://www.safeoregon.com/

ALL ARE WELCOME AT THE JUNE 6 PTA GENERAL MEETING

Join the PTA General meeting on June 6 at 7 p.m. in the LGE library when all PTA members are eligible to vote on three items:

1) a budget amendment for the current budget in support of local families in need

2) our proposed 2023-24 executive board members, and vote

3) a placeholder budget for the 2023-24 school year

Any LG family (members and non-members) are welcome to attend any PTA meetings. You will learn more about our plans for the next year in support of our mission to serve the students, teachers and staff at Lake Grove. All in-person meetings also offer a Zoom option. JOIN THE 2023-24 EXECUTIVE BOARD FOR THE LAKE GROVE PTA

The Lake Grove PTA is a group of parents, teachers and staff working together to enrich the student experience at our elementary school. We are currently recruiting volunteers to serve on our board of directors during the 2022-23 school year. As a member of the PTA board, you will help students become more engaged in the school and the greater community where we live, as well as develop new experiences and enrichment opportunities for our students.
