Prayer
Loving God, we thank you for the care and affection of Jesus,
who placed children in the very centre of his community.
We pray for children, created in your own image and likeness, dwelling places of your Spirit, each one called to experience the freedom of your daughters and sons.
We pray for all children – those in our family homes, those in our community of faith, those in the wider community, those in our global village, those with plenty and those who struggle to survive.
Grant us courage to speak out and act when children need protection, care and shelter.
We pray in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Friends
ARTS show
It was lovely to see our community come together last Friday to celebrate the artistic talents of our students at the 2020 ARTS show. The theme for the ARTS show was ‘Australia’ which was reflected through visual arts and musical performances. The day began with an Open Morning for prospective families and a visit from the Presentation Sisters who visited the children in their classrooms. The show was opened by Mrs Jody Chaney and her daughter Eliza, a past pupil of St Thomas’ and now the ARTS Captain at Iona Presentation College, who shared the importance of the arts in society today. Afterwards parents, grandparents and friends enjoyed viewing the art work and listening to instrumental performances. A hightlight of the show were the class art pieces organized by our parents and completed by the children. A magnificient morning and afternoon tea was enjoyed by all. An event like this would not be possible without parental support so a huge thank you to all our amazing helpers and to Mrs Byrnes, Mrs Cotton and all the staff.
National Child Protection Week
This week is National Child Protection Week. Under this year’s theme “Putting children first,” Australians are asked to look at how children can be prioritised in their lives and communities. Putting children first means prioritising the safety and wellbeing of children. There are little things we do every day that can help to create safer environments for children. For instance:
· Be kind to children and parents
· Respect young people
· Be a good role model around children
· Get involved in your local community
· Look out for signs of abuse or neglect; if you suspect something is wrong talk to an expert
· Always take reports of abuse seriously
· Avoid blame and don’t judge; instead, ask yourself what you can do to help
· Listen to the needs of children and spend time with them
Kings Park Excursion
Our Pre Primary to Year 6 students travelled to Kings Park on Wednesday to participate in cultural immersion programs appropriate for their year level. Students learnt about Kaarta Koomba (Kings Park) – a place of significance past, present and future. The programs help develop respect and empathy for diversity in our community. Students learnt about traditional ways of life and the value of caring for Country, whilst enjoying the nature playscape and warm sunshine. A big thank you to all parents who assisted with supervision.
Oracy
On Tuesday, student’s in Year 3 participated in Oracy. Oracy is a process whereby students learn to talk confidently, appropriately and sensitively. The confidence shown by the students throughout their presentations was outstanding. We look forward to the Year 4 ORACY presentations next Wednesday 23 September.
Debating
Students in Year 6 have been preparing for an interschool debating competition scheduled for next Tuesday evening. The Year 5 students will be participating in school debating next Monday 21st September. We wish all our students well as they develop and refine their debating skills.
Year 5 Camp
The Year 5 students are heading off for an overnight camp this Friday evening. Students will learn the importance of conservation through educational evening activities at the Perth Zoo. We look forward to hearing more about their adventures in the next newsletter.

Our Award Winners
Employment: Finance Officer
We are seeking to appoint a permanent, part-time Finance Officer working two days per week or equivalent, to work in conjunction with our current Finance Officer Mrs Leanne Hancock. The role primarily supports the Principal with finance, compliance and control of the day to day accounts of the school. This role would suit an organised and personable individual with initiative who is looking to develop their skills base so that they can work with increasing independence as well as in a team environment. A relevant qualification in Accounting, Business or a related field would be an advantage, but is not essential. The vacancy can be viewed on our school website: https://www.stthomas.wa.edu.au/current-vacancies/
National Science Week 2020
Jo Myers, our resident Scientist in Schools, ran a Blue Water course for Year 3. They looked at the abundance and diversity of fish and coral with underwater photos collected from a marked out marine area. They used the macroscope to examine marine specimens and wrote underwater using special underwater paper.
ST THOMAS’ ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2020
We had perfect weather for our Athletics carnival on Friday 4 September and it was great to have so many families supporting the event given we were able to, due to COVID restrictions. We were proud of the high level of participation and effort shown by the students who participated in various athletics and novelty events. Thank you to all of the staff, parents and community members for their assistance throughout the day, whether it was setting up, packing away, scoring, recording, announcing, handing out ribbons and collecting/returning gear to the school.
Congratulations to Forrest who were our overall winners and to Gittens winning the ‘Spirit Award’ for 2020.
