Hello Families,
The motto for this week is:
I can see things from many different points of view.
There is always another way to see things. For example, how students "see" homework will vary:
• Homework is horrible.
• Homework is a "have to."
• Homework is helpful.
We are always choosing a perspective; we are just often unaware of our choices. Students may "do" their homework but rarely (if ever) take the time to determine how they "see" their homework. After all, if they get into the habit of "seeing" homework as punishment, they are setting themselves up for future punishment.
The good news is if we don't like what we see - we can change it! We may not be able to change the conditions (we have homework), but we can change how we see and experience those conditions.
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
For one year, my three children were in elementary, middle, and high school in three different schools. Pick-up and drop-off times were all different, and I complained to a friend about how I wasted hours and hours carpooling each day. My friend said, "Soon, your kids will be driving, but now you have this time together in carpool, cherish it."
I followed her advice, and everything changed. What I once viewed as a chore was now a time to catch up on one another's day, connect, listen to our favorite songs, and enjoy our time together.
A small change in perspective made a big change in my life.
