September is here and gone, the leaves are changing, and our lost and found doubles in size daily. So many great things have happened this past week! We had our first fire drill with an alarm that included a visit from the Grand Isle Fire Department (planned, of course!). We handed out our first Golden Paw Awards for students who exemplify our expectations of being Kind, Safe, and Engaged.

We've had several classrooms earn 100 paws which means they decide on a celebration! We've had slime day, PJ day, popcorn day, and costume day, to name a few!

Classrooms dove deeper into their curriculum, students continued to work on skills to build positive relationships, and we started focusing more on appropriate behavior in the bathroom.

We celebrated National Custodial Appreciation Day, which is actually today, to say thank you to Toby, Shannon, and Matt for all they do around our school!

As we gear up for October, we have many fun activities and events planned! Keep your eye on this newsletter and our sign out front.

Seeing as many families as we did at the open house was great! Thank you for coming out to visit, walk around, meet teachers, and engage in our scavenger hunt!

For the next month, I'll be putting resources in the newsletter that support our school community and our families.

When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior, they send the message that it is unacceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time.

Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.

What Is Bullying

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.

In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:

• An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
• Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.

Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

No School- October 6-7

Weekend in the Islands- October 8th from 10 am-1 pm. Our school as a donation site for socks and snacks.

National Fire Safety Week- Week of October 9th

National Bus Safety Week- Week of October 16th

Harvest Dance- Mr. Foster is bringing back the Harvest Dance! It's a family-centered school activity on October 28th from 6-7:30. I heard there might be square dancing!

GIS Halloween Celebration- Students have advocated for a fun Halloween activity on the 31st. I will keep you posted on what this will look like.

While GIS students are receiving free breakfast and lunch, families may also put money on their student's lunch accounts so they can get seconds. If you need help figuring out how to do this, please reach out!
