From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
This Sunday is Mother’s Day! Ladies, whether you have kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, nieces, nephews, or don’t have children of your own, all of us look up to you. Your patience, kindness, and grace make our lives better. We love you and are looking forward to celebrating you!
Commitment Sunday
Last Sunday, we celebrated Commitment Sunday, where we asked you who call Zion your church home to pledge what you can give to this ministry over the coming fiscal year. You responded in a big way! To date, we’ve received 153 pledges totaling $1,237,343. If you haven’t pledged yet, please do so. We still have a gap between what is pledged and the need for next year’s budget. Pledge cards will be available outside the sanctuary in the narthex or outside the worship center in the lobby. You can fill one out and place it in the pledge basket. Thank you for your incredible generosity and faithful commitment!
Rev. Kyle Borcherding
Zion is seeking a new Director of Worship, and the Worship Director Committee has invited Rev. Kyle Borcherding to come to Zion for a visit. Pastor Borcherding currently serves as the worship pastor at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Avon, Indiana, where he leads their modern worship services, has played organ for their traditional services, plans both their traditional and modern formats, and coordinates volunteer needs for all services. In addition, he regularly preaches and teaches Bible classes. Pastor Borcherding is married to Kelsey, and is a father to Trevor, Emma, and Avery. Kelsey stays at home full time with their family, and has professional experience in teaching, medical billing, and photography. Pastor Borcherding will visit Zion the weekend of June 10 and 11 and will lead worship at 8 am and 10:45 am that Sunday.
Following the 10:45 am service, you’re invited to a lunch and Q&A time with Pastor Borcherding in the lobby. We’re excited to have Pastor Borcherding and his family visit. Please pray for the Worship Director Committee as it continues to seek who God might be bringing to join our team!
Keeping our Campus Beautiful
Summer is almost upon us. This means hot days and dry months. We are committed to maintaining all parts of our campus well, including our landscaping. The Board of Trustees has approved the installation of an irrigation system on the southside of campus so that we can keep our landscaping looking welcoming for everyone, including our guests, but we need your help. If you would be willing to donate to help maintain our landscaping, please contact Steve Cashio at steven.cashio@zionwalburg.org.
Communion
This Sunday, we celebrate Communion at Zion. If you attend the 8 am service, we are making a small change in how Communion is served. If you receive Communion in your pew at the beginning of the distribution rather than coming forward to the altar, you will still be able to receive it in your pew, but beginning this Sunday, it will be brought to you near the end of the distribution. Communion is a precious gift from Jesus to us, and we look forward to celebrating it with you in both services this weekend!
Here’s to Heroes
This weekend, we kick off a new series called “Here’s to Heroes,” where we will honor the heroes in our lives and society and see how the best heroes always point us toward the ultimate hero – Jesus. To begin our series, we’ll honor mothers and look at a story of a mother who encountered deep struggles in 1 Samuel 1:1-11:
There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord. Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb. Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?” Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if You will only look on
Your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget Your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
Hannah was desperate to have a son, so she cried out to God. Where are you desperate? Do you cry out to God? Learn about God’s response to Hannah and His promise to us by joining us this Sunday for worship at 8 am in our beautiful sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our fabulous worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.
Your pastors love you!

Faith and Film Series
We all have our favorite movies. People often experience a vague sense of joy or wonder from these great stories. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we may ask, “Why is it that our hearts are burning within us?” In such a cinematic moment, much to our delight and surprise, we can often discover a subtle hint of the Gospel in the flickering light.
Zion’s Mission Board is sponsoring Faith and Film at The Palace Theater Sunday evenings 5:30-8:30 PM in July and October this year. This is a new sort of ESL class, in this case, Entertainment as a Second Language.
The screenings and discussions will be moderated by Dr. Philip Hohle and will include responses prepared by mavens on religion and film, including pastors and other members from Zion. This class is a reboot of the successful Cinema & Religion series that ran from 2014-2020 at the Moviehouse & Eatery in Austin.
In addition to anyone wanting to improve their media literacy skills, Zion is looking for Movie Missionaries who will bring unchurched friends to the neutral site of the Palace for a deeper examination of the worldview the filmmaker is promoting.
Volunteers are needed. Contact philip@parabolicmedia.com to join the team helping host these events at The Palace.

Empower your study of the Scriptures with LHM''s Daily Devotions
With messages based on the church calendar's three-year lectionary, individual devotions are based on Psalms, the Old Testament, the New Testament, and Gospel texts. Additional devotions explore a hymn from the Lutheran Service Book, a "classic" text from some LHM resource, and a sermon excerpt by a previous Speaker for The Lutheran Hour. Each day's audio is provided by Speaker Rev. Dr. MichaseZeigler. The Daily Devotions offer an excellent opportunity to study God's Word through text and reflection questions. Go to www.lhm.org/dailydevotions to read today's devotion or subscribe to receive devotions via email.
