It is hard to believe we are approaching the end of the first quarter of school. I hope this finds all of you in good health! We want to send a quick reminder on the importance of good attendance! Children who miss a lot of time at school can suffer in the long term from significant gaps in their learning.

Attendance Matters:

Studies show many children who miss too many days in kindergarten and first grade can struggle academically in later years. They often have trouble mastering reading by the end of third grade. Foundational reading skills taught in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade are critical in developing strong readers. Missing out on these early reading lessons due to absences can create gaps in their learning that are harder to fix later.

Absences can add up before you know it. Under state guidelines we utilize the following indicators:

It doesn’t matter if these absences are excused or unexcused. They all represent lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity to learn. When students arrive late or leave early they also miss instruction that results in real learning loss.

A high number of absences in one class can affect the whole classroom by creating disruptions to the pace of instruction. We need your support to ensure that children’s education is not affected by poor attendance.

• Review your child’s attendance record in MyStudent to see their current number of absences.
• Ensure your child arrives to school on time and stays in school from bell to bell
• Schedule family events and vacations with your child's school calendar in mind.
• Limit the amount of time that your child misses school due to medical appointments. Try to arrange around the school day.

NO SCHOOL- Monday, October 17th:

This Friday is the end of Quarter 1. Teachers will have a planning day on Monday, and there will no school for students.

QUARTER 1 REPORT CARDS- October 25th:

Report Cards will be released in your Pasco Parent Portal on October 25th. If you do not have a parent portal yet, please reach out to the PVES front office and we will support you getting set up.

BOO GRAMS- October 3rd-14th:

This month PVES will be selling Boo Grams. This is an opportunity for students to send a Fall or Halloween message and trinket to friends. They are $1 each. A purple form came home in last week’s communication folder. They will be sold from October 3rd until October 14th and will delivered on Wednesday, October 26th.

PVES FALL FESTIVAL- Friday, October 28th:

This year PVES will host a Fall Festival on Friday, October 28th from 5:00-7:00 PM. This is a family event. Wristbands will be sold for unlimited bouncing in the 4 bounce houses, and 2 inflatable games, and unlimited entry to the maze. Tickets will be sold to play games, do crafts, buy popcorn and cotton candy, get your face painted, play in the cake walk and to vote and win our storybook pumpkins! All ticketed activities will be 1 ticket. Food (pizza, chips, drinks) will be sold for cash only.

Wristbands are presale only, they will not be sold the night of the event. Tickets will be sold presale 25 for $20, and $1 each the night of the event. You can preorder a meal (Large pizza, 4 bags of chips, and 4 drinks) for $15, or order al la carte the night of the festival. There will also be a Kona Ice truck on campus. All presale options can now be purchased on Rycor through your Parent Portal. You can also send in cash with the form that was in your Wednesday folder last week. All presales will stop on October 21st. All purchases will be sent home the day before the event, October 27th.

CHARACTER PARADE- Monday, October 31st, 10:00 am:

In the spirit of dressing up and having fun, students may dress up as a character from a book they've read. The character should have traits and characteristics that relate to one of the IB Learner Profiles. For example, a student may choose to dress up as "Fancy Nancy" from the Fancy Nancy book series. Fancy Nancy would represent two of our Learner Profiles, Communicator for all of the ways she says hello and Courageous for all of the crazy outfits she

chooses to wear. Another example is "Harry Potter", as Harry would represent the Learner Profiles of Thinker, Knowledgeable and Courageous. We are NOT looking for ghoulish outfits. Costumes may NOT include masks, weapons or fake blood.

Families are invited to join us outside the school at the bus loop to watch the students parade around the bus loop. The parade will start promptly at 10 am. In case of bad weather we will not be able to accommodate families for the parade and/or have a make-up day.

LIMITED EDITION SHIRTS FOR SALE- through October 21st:

We are selling for pre-order these limited edition PVES shirts. Once pre-orders close the shirts will be ordered and will arrive the start of November!

Pine View Elementary will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week Oct. 24-28. This year’s theme is Celebrate Life! We are celebrating living a healthy lifestyle by dressing up this week.

Mindful Monday – Celebrate your dreams – wear pajamas. Patriots use creative thinking skills to plan out goals and dreams.

Team up Tuesday – Celebrate your team – wear your favorite team shirt. Patriots communicate with fellow “teammates” to express their ideas about being healthy.

Wellness Wednesday – Celebrate being healthy – wear exercise clothes. Patriots are balanced and lead a healthy lifestyle by working hard, resting, and exercising.

Thought Thursday – Celebrate in style – wear your favorite sunglasses/hat/ accessory or neon colors. Patriots are reflective about who they are and the healthy life they lead.

Fantastic Friday – Celebrate with school pride – wear red. Patriots are principled and take responsibility for living a healthy lifestyle.

• Monday, October 10: Join us at our monthly PTO Meeting on Monday, October 10 at 8:20 AM in the PVES media center/”the hub”. Come get involved and meet a great group of people who work together to build a community of teachers, school staff, and student families.
• Friday, October 28: Join us at the Fall Festival on Friday, October 28 from 5-7 PM. We are asking for volunteers to help set up, monitor bounce houses, set up a maze, clean up, prize delivery, and prep ticket/wristband sales bundles. Volunteering will be in shifts, so you are still able to spend time and enjoy the festival with your family. • Monday, November 7: We have a Chick-fil-A Spirit Day on Monday, November 7, 2022 from 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM. Visit the Chick-fil-A at Cypress Creek Town Center near the Outlets and mention Pine View Elementary at the time of purchase. Dine-in, drive-thru or mobile order. Patriot Readers: PVES' monthly reading program is open to all PVES students. All you need to do is read for 30 minutes every day and mark off each day you read on your calendar. Turn in your completed calendar at the end of the month and earn a cool prize. For younger students or beginning readers, you can read to your student. Look for new reading calendars monthly.

The Sunshine State Young Reader Award books are finally here!

The SSYRA program is a statewide motivational reading program. It encourages students to read independently for pleasure. Books are selected by school librarians across the state for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and multicultural representation. Students can check out one of the selected books from the Media Center or the Pasco County Public Library. Once they read the book, they have the option to take a quiz to show their understanding of the book. Brag tags are awarded for successful quiz completion. Additional prizes are given the more SSYRA books students read. There are 15 books for grades K-2 and 15 books for grades 3-5. Pick out one of these good reads today!

All Pro Dads now meeting monthly!

Our next meeting is October 12th at 8:15am in the cafeteria. RSVP using the QR.

We get dads/male figures involved through a program called All Pro Dads. Our chapter provides an opportunity for dads to spend quality time with their children at school through a monthly breakfast meeting. It’s a time when dads get to tell their children why they are proud of them, engage in conversation on positive character traits, and have some fun together!

IB Learner Profile: Principled

Wear Pink on Wednesdays!

The IB Learner profile aims to develop students who are principled. Students who are principled act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.

How can parents help to develop students who are principled at home?

• What you do as a parent matters. How you treat and respond to your child should come from a knowledgeable, deliberate sense of what you want to accomplish.
• You cannot be too loving. It is simply not possible to spoil a child with love. What we often think of as the product of spoiling a child is never the result of showing a child too much love. It is usually the consequence of giving a child things in place of love.
• Connect behavior to character.
• Provide opportunities for your child to make their own decisions, discuss the consequences of their decisions.
• Read and tell stories in which the story characters demonstrate making principled decisions
• Discuss how being principled is life long commitment and well sought after as a characteristic to have

DISMISSAL REMINDERS:

If you need to change your child’s dismissal, as we prioritize safety, please communicate that by calling the front office and the office staff will write a pass to communicate it to your child’s teacher. All changes need to be in by 2:30 PM daily to ensure they have communicated in time for our dismissal.
