Message from Principal Zimmerman
Hello Lincoln Families!
What a fall it’s been already! We have been in school for about 6 weeks now and it has been so fun to watch our students get to know their teachers, their classmates and learn the routines of school! I am so proud of our students and our staff for jumping into this new school year with positive attitudes and excitement to be back to school!
Thank you to families who signed up for fall conferences. The teachers have enjoyed meeting with everyone and discussing goals for the school year. Please remember that you can always reach out to your child’s teachers via email if you have questions about how the school year is going! The home-school partnership is key to student success, and the Lincoln staff is committed to working together to make sure this school year is the best it can be for your child!
As the weather turns chillier, please remember that we have outside recess everyday, so make sure your child has the appropriate clothing for the weather. Now, more than ever, it’s so important that we give the students the chance to get outside, get fresh air and run around together!
As always, thank you for your support! Lincoln families are the best around!

Student Drop off and Early Pick Up
If a student is being dropped off in the car loop in the morning, families cannot sit and wait in their car with their student. Students need to exit the car immediately and families should pull through and exit the parking lot. Adult supervision begins at 8:45 for student arrival on the blacktop by the playground.
If families need to pick up their student(s) early from school, they need to enter Door 1, swipe their license to check out the student and then the student will be called down. Students will not be called down prior to a parent/guardian checking them out. Please allow enough time as sometimes students are not in their classrooms and need to be located and then sent to the office. Also, all early pickups should happen prior to 3:15 as the end of the day is very busy in the classrooms and office.
Kindergarten News
Kindergarteners are adjusting to school, learning the routines and making new friends! We had so much fun working on our fine motor and literacy skills while learning about colors!
This month in Wonders, our weekly themes will be: Make New Friends, Get Up and Go!, and Use Your Senses. We will have so much fun using our senses to explore apples and pumpkins!
In math, students will learn to quickly recognize how many objects are in a collection (up to 5) without counting, compare sets using the words more and less, develop number sense with combinations that make 5 and 10, count objects and match the quantity to the written numeral and build with 2-dimensional shapes.
We are looking forward to meeting with our kindergarten families during fall conferences!
Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Karsnia, Mrs. Ovitt, & Mrs. Peterson
First Grade News
Happy October!
We are in for a spooky good time this month!
In reading this month we are focusing our learning on beginning to read words with short vowel sounds.
In math we are focusing on practicing counting forward up to 120 and backward from 20 and 30. We are also practicing counting by 2's to 20, 5's to 50, and 10's to 100.
In our purposeful people curriculum (also known as character strong) we are starting to focus on RESPONSIBILITY.
We kicked off October with sight word pumpkins, and even some scarecrows! Of course let us know if you need anything or have any questions!

Second Grade News
Hello 2nd Grade Families!
We are off to a fantastic start in second grade! We have been working hard on building our classroom communities. Our Purposeful People focus this month is on Kindness and Respect. We will be using what we learn to help build our classroom respect agreements. We are also excited about getting started with our first Wonders Unit that focuses on friends and family. We will be uncovering how families and friends learn, grow, and help one another. We are also working on reading stamina, and how to pick a good fit book.
Please remember to contact the office for any changes in afternoon transportation. Due to our lunch time being early we will not be having snack time this school year.
Stay tuned to the Lincoln Newsletter for upcoming exciting events happening at Lincoln and in Second Grade. We look forward to an awesome year!

Third Grade News
Hello Third Grade Families!
Third grade is off to a great start! In math, the students are almost done with Unit 1 Addition and Subtraction. Then we will start Unit 2 Multiplication. In this unit, the students will play some fun math games to help them understand multiplication. In reading, we will begin Unit 2. In this unit, we will focus on the comprehension skills of theme and point of view while reading a variety of engaging stories.

Fourth Grade News
Hello Fourth Grade Families,
This year is off to a great start! We have completed Unit 1 in Math. We are onto Unit 2, where we are working with place value and multiplication. Each class will build a Great Wall of Base Ten, so we can visualize how numbers look as they are multiplied by ten. We are also working on our first Math Arts Integrated project- Multiplication Wheel of Design.
For Reading, we are working on skills and strategies to understand complex texts in deeper ways. Please be sure to have your student read every day at home. Ask them about things such as the author’s purpose for writing the text, and what they think will happen next. We are writing personal narratives for Unit 1.

Fifth Grade News
Welcome to 5th Grade Lincoln Families!
October is all about Responsibility in 5th Grade. We have been working hard at reviewing what we are responsible for as students and teachers. We are committing ourselves to being mindful of our actions and taking responsibility for our choices, whether they be good or bad.
In math students completed their first unit which was all about multiplication and division strategies. As the month continues students will be working on orders of operations and PEMDAS. In science students will be trying to solve a mystery around matter. Be sure to ask them about their detective work in science. In reading students are hard at work on comprehension skills and strategies and will be reading stories about inventions. Ask your students about Philo Farnsworth and his breakthrough that brought us TV.
We have also started our Dancing Classrooms residency which will continue through December. In this residency students are learning about respect through ballroom dancing. We also have a field trip to Orchestra Hall on October 25th. If your child will need a cold lunch ordered from school, please be sure to return the order form and get a new one from your child's classroom teacher.
Mr. Gamache, Mrs. Gaspar & Mrs Mercer
Lincoln Arts
Hello Lincoln Families!
This has been a busy month for our Lincoln Artists. For the third year in a row, our students get to paint a rock to add to our rock garden outside. This is a chance to show our individual creativity, as well as be part of the community. Check it out the next time you stop by school!
Students are exploring their natural surroundings in a variety of artistic ways, from improvising movements while singing Autumn Leaves in music class, creating sight word pumpkins in 1st grade, or gathering leaves to create a monoprint in art.
5th grade has started their Heart of Dance residency with Ms. Ella Boyer, a professional ballroom dancer from the Twin Cities. Check out why the work done in this residency is important for our students!
Thanks to a grant from the Anoka Hennepin Educational Foundation, we have started a project to create Arts and Culture Boxes, which will be available to all teachers to check out and use in their classroom. Our hope is that we can collect artifacts and resources that will help educate our school community about the cultures that are represented by our Lincoln students, families, and community members.
If you are interested in being part of this project, I would love to hear from you! Email andrea.whitcomb@ahschools.us or call 763-506-3180 to learn more! Thank you for considering!
BAND/ORCHESTRA/CHOIR
Our first rehearsals for Band, Orchestra, and Choir are on Wednesday, Oct. 11. If students own their own instrument, please have them bring it on Oct. 11. Make sure you know how to access Seesaw, as the majority of our communication will go through that. Students will be bringing instruments home after school, so be prepared!
Here are a few stats about enrollment. Amazing!
40 students in Band
24 students in Orchestra
41 students in Choir
27 students in more than one ensemble
