Marking Period 2 is Ending!
We are almost halfway through the 2023-2024 school year with Marking Period 2 ending on Friday, January 26th! At that time, teachers will begin to close out the grades, and the Marking Period 2 Report Card will be available via the Genesis Parent Portal on Wednesday, January 31st.
LEAP Tank: Grade 8
As part of their final year in the LEAP program, 8th grade students were given an opportunity to demonstrate many of the skills they’ve learned throughout their time in LEAP, such as problem solving, creative thinking, and teamwork. These future entrepreneurs identified a need for a product or service, engaged in idea generation, conducted market research, developed a business plan, and wrote and rehearsed persuasive pitches. They concluded this experience by presenting the following original innovations and inventions to a panel of judges and audience members in a Shark Tank-inspired event:
- OmniTasker: The Website to Get Things Done (Isabella Duan, Sel Earle, and Gloria Jung)
- Rise and Shine: A Better Way to Wake Up (Leila Hilmo and Posey Ring)
- DoBomb: A Smarter To-Do List (Aaron Flores and Ethan Kahanov)
- Glam: Your Outfit-Picking Solution (Lana Khan and Marie Tenebruso)
Congratulations to these future entrepreneurs for a job well done!
Debate Team
On Wednesday, January 17th, the CDW Debate Team participated in the third Tournament of the season in Cresskill. Debaters presented cases for and against the United States federal government increasing fiscal redistribution by adopting a federal jobs guarantee, expanding Social Security, and/or providing a basic income. Congratulations to all the participating teammates, especially Michael Tang and Amy Choe, who won their Affirmative round against Cresskill 32 to 17. The team will debate again on January 30th at BCA!
Bergen Brain Busters
The CDW Brain Busters team, represented by Brody Book, Amy Choe, Justin Lee, Ethan Kahanov, Matthew Krohn, Xavier Okeke, Emma Park, and Michael Tang participated in the fourth meet of the season at Demarest. Brody, Amy, Ethan, and Michael's teams made it to the semi-finals and Michael's team took first place! The next Bergen Brain Busters Meet is in Harrington Park in February.
NVOT Physics Club Visits CDW
The NVOT Physics Club came to visit CDW on Thursday, January 18th. Mr. Gagliano's Period 8 class interactively learned about many different aspects of physics including, but not limited to, the study of matter and its motion and related concepts such as energy and force.
AMC 8
On Thursday, January 18th, we welcomed over 120 students from CDW and other Valley schools to compete in the AMC 8 Math Competition. As stated on the AMC 8 website, "The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables."
Thank you to Mr. Clark for preparing this important event and to Dr. Sullivan for helping administer the competition for the students in the Valley.
