Welcome April! ¡Bienvenido abril!

From the Principal

Hello Inlet View Families and Friends,

Our days are sunnier and longer, and we have Earth Day to think about. This is also Stress Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to focus on our environmental impact as well as pay attention to everyone’s emotional well-being. Doesn’t it feel like April should be pronounced Ahhhhhh…pril?

Despite the brilliant days, is still chilly outside and there is a lot of snow in the ground too. Please make sure your children have proper outdoor clothing. All children have a 30-minute outdoor recess. They must be prepared.

April is a busy testing month . Although, AK STAR testing was paused last week, I want to let you know the AK STAR Math and English Language Arts tests will restart on Monday, April 11. ASD has worked directly with its partners at DEED and NWEA to address the issue for our students and teachers. MAP and FastBridge benchmarks will be here the next couple of weeks as well. Please make sure you children don't miss school days. Data from these benchmark assessments give us a good idea of where your child is at and how we can support him/her in the classroom.

We are gearing up for the end of the school year and our school team is working on a plan that will allow us to continue with some traditions (6th grade picnic day, promotion ceremony, field day and end of school BBQ, amongst others). Please stay tuned for more details as we continue to work on the specifics of these activities.

We are having a great time in Spanish this last quarter of the school year. Our sixth graders are gaining confidence using partners reading texts, our 4th and 5th graders are creating impressive final drafts of their narrative responses to Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats- or as we have come to know it, Un día de nieve. Even our 2nd and 3rd graders have begun the process of untangling a text to learn to create narrative responses. This includes understanding whole phrases, beginning to identify verb conjugation patterns as well as review sentence structure patterns from previous lessons. Your kids are impressing me everyday with their growth, their confidence, and ability to use Spanish in creative ways.

Thanks to the Ahrens extended family, our pen pal responses from Colombia are on their way up to us now. I can't wait to read what they wrote us back, and to see how their English language learning process is going. We will begin our responses to our Colombian pen pals any day!

Speaking of any day, if you have time any day of the week to help make Spanish materials, it would be a blessing to have support in creating more teaching and learning tools. Some things that improve our lessons include additional partner reading texts, classroom voting signs, flashcards, question prompt cards and more. I have materials ready for helpers in both the workroom and my classroom. Come any time. Thank you in advance!!

IB Learner Profile of the month : BALANCED

Students who are balanced are healthy and are aware that eating properly and exercising is important in their lives. They understand that it is important to have a balance between the physical and mental aspects of their bodies. They spend time doing many different things.

How can parents help to develop students who are BALANCED at home?

Here's what you can do at home

· Encourage your child to participate in a wide variety of structured activities.

· During less structured time, also be aware of the activities that your child is participating in. Too much time in front of the computer or television is obviously not desirable, but all kids need to do a variety of things. Generally active kids should take time for quiet reading or reflection; students who spend a lot of time drawing or reading, should be encouraged to also exercise and play.

· Discuss the food groups with your child. Spend a few minutes during a mealtime deciding if what your family is eating is balanced.

· Role model this attribute. Spend time as a parent or family doing many different things.

Running Club is Happening!

Running club starts April 12, 2022 and runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30 until May 5th. Please turn in signed permission slips (sent home last week) and consider volunteering to help keep our students safe.

Extra permission slips are in the office if you need one.
