University School Weekly Update

As we prepare for the upcoming week, we ask that you please review the following information:

Any student planning on returning to University School during the 2022-2023 school year, must complete this re-enrollment form for each child returning by February 28, 2022. Any student who has not completed the re-enrollment form by February 28, 2022 risks losing their spot to a student on the waiting list, so please be sure to complete the form located in the link above. The material fees can be paid when re-enrolling or by the start of the 2022-2023 school year.

All additional documents that will need to be completed, will be sent home when students return in July, 2022 (see approved 2022-2023 calendar).

Pierce is a standout student during technology class. He shows a passion for technology and is always eager to put new skills to the test. He is also patient and willing to help others and the teacher during tech class. He provides insight and adds to the lesson by respectfully engaging in the conversations. Pierce volunteers his help to others if they need it and shows a positive attitude when troubleshooting.

Getting to know Pierce Adler:

· You can only eat at one restaurant for the next year…which are you picking? “Pal’s…I really love their hotdogs and vanilla shakes!”

· What qualities do you most admire in others? “I admire others who are understanding and playful.”

· If you could travel back in time to the beginning of this school year, what advice would you give yourself? “Don’t stress too much about Covid!”

"Pierce's enthusiasm for coding is infectious,” said Elementary Technology Teacher Ms. Paiton Chambers. “I allowed him to lead a lesson in sharing his knowledge of code with his fellow fourth graders. He made the lesson engaging for them by adding in a game element. His confidence is supported by his effort to read and learn about code on his own time. I enjoy watching him grow his technology skills and share them with others."

Jack is responsible and hard working. He goes above and beyond to make sure that he is successful in all that he does. Jack is highly competitive and helps encourage other students to perform their best as well.

· You can only eat at one restaurant for the next year…which are you picking? “I’m picking Sahib. I had some of their Lamb Korma in my lunch today and it was really good.”

· What qualities do you most admire in others? “I think a good sense of humor is a good quality in a person.”

· If you could travel back in time to the beginning of this school year, what advice would you give yourself? “I would tell myself to study more if I traveled back in time to the beginning of the school year.”

“Jack is really a team player who tries his best at all he does,” said Ms. Leah Darnell, Jack’s seventh-grade Language Arts teacher. “He is hardworking and ambitious. He strives to give his best, and he also lifts others up along with him. He seeks out opportunities to improve and is a real leader for our 7th graders!”

Emily Fritsch spearheaded the creation of a homework club for middle and high school students who needed help from teachers and student-tutors with math and other homework afterschool on Mondays and Thursdays. Emily showed a lot of leadership by taking on this project and making it happen. She found teacher sponsors, recruited students and teachers to tutor, and worked out the logistics/planning of getting this new program in place.

· You can only eat at one restaurant for the next year…which are you picking? “I would pick Mid-city Grill in downtown Johnson City. It has many options to choose from and I love their version of the Philly Cheesesteak!”

· What qualities do you most admire in others? “The qualities I look for are loyalty, trustworthiness, and truthfulness.”

· If you could travel back in time to the beginning of this school year, what advice would you give yourself? “Trust in your knowledge and find a Physics tutor right away!”

"Emily is a leader who saw a need and tried to fill it in order to help her classmates,” pointed out Dr. Ariane Day, University School’s Assistant Director. “She has a strong desire to help those around her, and put that desire into action. Way to go Emily!”

Annual Health Screenings are scheduled for Thursday, February 10th, 2022, in the University School Library for Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th & 9th Grades. Parents will receive a letter with your child's results and any referrals that are recommended related to the screening.

To be recognized as a TN Scholar at graduation, please complete all documentation and application listed in Canvas Announcement. Applications are due March 31st. This is a HARD Deadline. Please see Dr. Shaw for more information.

After some delay, it is now time to start ordering the 2021/2022 yearbooks. The good news is that there will not be a price increase for the yearbooks; however, this yearbook price does not include personalization.

There are two ways you can order your child’s yearbook.

You may order online at www://yblive.net (links to an external site). Once on the website, click on “Shop Online”. There are drop down menus for state, city, and then a choice of two yearbooks (University School Elementary/Middle or University High School). Once selecting the yearbook you wish to purchase, you may click order. You will then be prompted to create an account for the publisher, and once the account is created, you will be able to complete your order.

The price for ordering online is $50.40 for high school yearbook and $29.40 for elementary/middle school yearbook. The online cost includes a nominal ordering fee.

We are offering a chance to have your child’s yearbook personalized. This is an additional $5.20 per book. This will be added to the cost of the book.

The second way you can order is to complete the attached yearbook order form and return the completed form with a check made out to University School to either your child’s teacher or to me. Please make sure the form is completed.

The price for ordering through the school (and not online) is $40 for high school yearbook and $28 for elementary/middle school yearbook. If you want to personalize the yearbook, the cost to order through the school is $45.20 for high school yearbook and $33.20 for elementary/middle school yearbook.)

The deadline to order is April 15, 2022.

In addition, we are looking for any pictures of vacations, pets, outings, ballgames, or activities that your child has participated in this school year.

If you would not mind sharing your pictures, please send them to school with your child, or email them to me at hammondse@etsu.edu. Please make sure each person in the picture is identified.

We need the pictures as soon as possible as our deadline is quickly approaching. I will scan the pictures and return as soon as possible.

Yearbook Adviser

Any student in grades 6-12 interested in participating in any of our spring sports (Baseball, Soccer, Softball, & Track), must turn in Physical Forms , Cardiac Arrest Forms, and Concussion Forms to the front office before you can begin practicing and competing with the team.

Any girl in grades 9-12 interested in participating in softball this fall are invited to attend a parent/athlete meeting on Thursday, February 10th at 5:30 PM in the school library.

Any student in grades 8-12 interested in participating in track this fall are invited to attend a parent/athlete meeting on Thursday, February 10th at 6:00 PM in the school cafeteria.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes unites two passions: faith and athletics. A Christian-based organization that has a presence in schools and communities worldwide, FCA is starting a Huddle (club) at University High! You have been placed at UH and uniquely gifted by God…it’s time to make an impact on others while also strengthening your own faith! FCA seeks to make disciples of Jesus Christ through our methods of engaging, equipping and empowering coaches and athletes to know and grow in Christ and lead others to do the same.

Meetings will be every Wednesday morning, beginning February 9th, 2022, from 7:30-7:50 a.m., in Room 219. The club is for students in grades 6-12. See/e-mail Coach Penley with questions or for more information.

Beta Club is collecting craft supplies to make Valentine's for Veterans.

Beta club will be having a Valentine's party February 14th, in the library. We will be creating small Valentines for the veterans at the Veteran's Administration hospital. We cannot do this without your support. We are requesting donations of the following items, which can be dropped off in a bin that is outside the main office:

• colored card stock paper
• markers
• glitter glue
• valentine's themed stickers
• valentine's themed stamps
• any other valentine related craft materials

University School Key Club is holding a Valentine’s Day Candy-Gram Fundraiser February 9th-11th . The proceeds will be used throughout the year to donate to local charities and to help offset costs for club sponsored trips.

Key Club members will be selling candy after school Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday February 9th-11th to anyone who wishes to give a special treat to a friend or teacher or family member on Valentine’s Day. The candy and a note will be delivered to recipients on Monday February 14th.

We are also welcoming donations of wrapped candy for this event should anyone wish to contribute!

The next foundation meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 7, 2022 at 4:30 PM. During the meeting, Drs. Day and Shaw will be sharing about the upcoming high school registration process and timeline for our rising 9th-12th graders. Please save the date for University School's "Back to the 80's" Spring Gala! The adult only event will be held April 9th at the Carnegie from 6-10p.m.

Yes, we are doing a “Back to the 80s” theme! So feel free to bust a move in that poofy prom dress or your old Bon Jovi t-shirt and ripped, acid washed jeans. You do you, McFly!

There will be food, music, dancing, and both a silent and live auction at the event while we rock out to some totally awesome 80s jams. Tickets will be $100 per person or $175 per couple and all proceeds go to fund our amazing school foundation, which supports both our teachers' and students' needs throughout the year. ETSU Health will host a COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Thursday, February 10, from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. on the second floor of the D.P. Culp Student Center. Based on availability, it is the goal of ETSU Health to provide both Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines at each clinic. However, check ETSU Health.org prior to each clinic to verify which vaccines are available that day. Availability will be updated regularly. Free and no appointment required. The Athletic Committee of the University School Foundation seeks to support all University School athletes and to raise awareness of the school and its athletic programs. The initial objective of this committee is to purchase and distribute a common "University Athletics" branded practice jersey for all high school and middle school athletes. We are seeking a University School family or business to cover the costs of the jerseys in exchange for the advertisement of their business on the jerseys. This is a unique opportunity to place your company name or logo on a jersey that will be worn by at least 100 student-athletes this Spring. (Additional jerseys and t-shirts will also be available for sale for anyone wishing to support University Athletics.)

Sponsorship options:

1. $1500 donation - Large name/logo of a single sponsor will appear on the back of all of the jerseys
2. $1000 donation - Medium name/logo of sponsor will appear on the back of the jerseys; additional sponsor names/logos will appear on the jersey sleeves
3. $250 donation - Small name/logo of sponsor will appear on one sleeve of the jersey
