President's Message
On March 3rd, Joy Squitieri, School Counselor Grades 5/7, shared with parents an overview of the PTA sponsored “Peace Corners” that have been created in three grade-5 classrooms to help students learn to regulate their emotions. The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive and Joy explained they plan to roll out Peace Corners to grade 6 in the near future.
On Thursday, April 7th at 9:30 AM we welcome Bonnie Spies, JRMS Art Teacher, who will share what’s new in the Fine Arts program.
We hope you’ll join us and look forward to seeing you on Thursday.
Project COOL Achieves Key Milestone!
On Wednesday, March 16th, we achieved a key milestone in the construction of our outdoor classroom known as Project COOL (“Creating an Oasis for Outdoor Learning”). As shown in the photos below, a 24” concrete pipe was installed in the stream bed which flows through the south end of the JRMS property and feeds into the Saugatuck watershed. This was a critical first step as it allows for access to the project site via a “land bridge” over the stream. Site work has now begun to clear the area where the pavilion and amphitheater will be installed. In addition, our pavilion was delivered to JRMS on a flatbed truck. The next phase of construction involves pouring concrete footings and a pad for the pavilion, and installing the concrete block seating for the amphitheater. “The students and faculty are thrilled to see this project coming together”, said JRMS Principal, Meghan Ward.
Not surprisingly, construction costs have risen sharply (like everything else!) and we are still looking for sponsors to help cover our costs. To ensure the project is ADA compliant and accessible for all students, we plan to pave the walkway to the pavilion, at an estimated cost of $10,000. If you or your business would like to discuss sponsorship opportunities, please contact Darrell Bradford at 203-648-7148. Every donation helps, no matter how small! Your tax-deductible donation can make it possible for us to complete the project this year which will benefit all students at JRMS for many years to come.
