MR. STEVEN E. SCHOCKOW WILL SERVE AS DAKE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
The West Irondequoit CSD Board of Education approved Mr. Steven E. Schockow as Interim Assistant Principal of Dake Junior High School at Thursday’s board meeting. Mr. Schockow will replace Mr. Nicholas DiMartino, who starts Jan. 2, 2024 as new Principal of Rogers Middle School. Mr. Schockow will begin working with Dake team members over the next two weeks and is expected to work through March 1st when it is anticipated a new Assistant Principal will start.
Mr. Schockow is a very familiar face to the Dake community and our district.
He taught seventh-grade social studies at Dake from 1998 until his retirement in 2022. For all but two of those years, Mr. Schockow served as department leader for Dake’s social studies unit. He also served in various other roles at Dake and the school district. For several years, Mr. Schockow was a member of Dake’s Health and Safety Committee and Building Planning Team. He was a Team Leader for its Instructional Support Team and a Mentor Teacher to First-Year Educators. At the district level, he was a West Irondequoit Teachers’ Association officer from 2007-15 and member of its Emergency Management (2020-22) and Reopening teams (2021-22).
“They say ‘Once a Daker, always a Daker!’ We are thrilled to have Steve rejoining Dake Nation,” Principal Troy Bajardi said. “Mr. Schockow brings with him, immense leadership expertise and a strong grasp of our building and district values. His connection to our community and our staff is unquestioned. We look forward to him rejoining our team.”
Prior to joining West Irondequoit, Mr. Schockow was Principal for 12 years (1986-98) at catholic junior-high and middle schools in Rochester and Spencerport. He began his career teaching social studies at St. Boniface School in Rochester in 1978.
His award-winning career in education, which spans 44 years, includes being named the New York State Middle School Social Studies Teacher of the Year (2007-08) and Middle School Teacher of the Year (2006-07) by the Rochester Area Council for Social Studies. In 2013, Mr. Schockow won the Sandra Baxter Award for Outstanding Service to the WI Teachers’ Association and teaching in the WICSD. He was chosen as commencement speaker by the Irondequoit H.S. Class of 2016. A four-time winner of the WITA Excellence Award in Education award, he is also a published author of the book, Thirty Days of Presidents (published in 2020).
A Brighton resident, Mr. Schockow owns a Bachelor of Science degree from Roberts Wesleyan University and Master’s degree in Secondary Social Studies from SUNY Brockport. In 1991, he earned certifications for School Administrators and Supervisors and Advanced Study in Educational Administration.
