January 2024
A Word From Our Principal
Hello Fridley Families and Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a restful winter break. We are quickly approaching the end of first semester. This is a great time to reflect on your scholar's current progress. Please connect with your scholar on our last opportunities to improve their grades. They will have two more opportunities of lunch and learn which are January 19th and 22nd. This is a great time to connect with their teachers to gain the additional support that's needed to finish the semester strong.
January is a very busy month! Students will begin selecting classes during registration for the 24-25 school year. Also, If you know anyone who is interested in enrolling at Fridley High School, please advise them to enroll online on our website.
Snow week will begin next week (1/8-1/12). Dress up days are included in this newsletter. This year we will end Snow Week with our school pep fest and home boys and girls basketball games.
I am grateful your continued partnership and if we can help you or your scholar in any way, please reach out.

Extended Day – Credit Recovery
If you are a sophomore who is 16 years old or a junior or senior and need credit recovery, please schedule an appointment to see your dean. Credit recovery is offered at the high school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Credit recovery is required for any student who fails a required course for graduation.
If you are currently enrolled in credit recovery, please continue attending on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The deadline to complete credit recovery is in mid-May. Attendance for credit recovery is not optional; it is required.
Course Changes for 2nd semester
When the second semester starts in late January, it will be difficult to make schedule changes. Please keep the following guidelines in mind when thinking about schedule changes.
Deans will make schedule changes for the following reasons:
- The student does not have the prerequisite(s)
- The student failed the class
- There is an obvious error (two classes at the same time)
- To add a class that is needed to graduate
- The schedule is unbalanced
Schedule changes will not be made for:
- Request a specific teacher
- Request a specific trimester
- Change lunch periods
- Have a class with a friend
- Leave to attend non-school sanctioned occupational activity
You might also notice a slight change in your students' schedule since the beginning of the year. We do, at times, move student schedules to balance class size within a semester and between semesters. We appreciate your understanding on this matter.
ACT Exams
The ACT will be offered on Tuesday, April 23rd, for all students in 11th grade.
The PreACT will be offered on Tuesday, April 23rd for all students in 10th grade.
Students are always welcome to take the ACT outside of the assigned district testing day. The ACT test does have a fee ranging from $50-$67. Fee waivers are available in the SSS office for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Please see your dean with questions.
Upcoming ACT tests/registration deadlines:
Test: February 10 Deadline: January 5
Test: April 13 Deadline: March 8
ACT Test Information for juniors and seniors:
Please keep in mind that many colleges/universities are requiring ACT scores or are listing ACT scores as being optional. Fridley High School recommends that all students take the ACT during their junior year and retake it if students want to improve their scores
Feminine Hygiene Products
State Statute Requires Schools to Provide Menstrual Products to Students in Grades 4-12
In response to legislation passed by Minnesota lawmakers last spring, Fridley Public Schools will make menstrual products available to students in grades 4 through grade 12. The products, limited to menstrual pads, will be available in dispensers at no cost to students and will be located in restrooms regularly used by students in these grades. The legislation requires that these products be available to students by January 1, 2024.
Research has shown that one in four teens missed class due to a lack of menstrual products, and this legislation is aimed at removing the barrier of limited access to menstrual products for students. Staff have installed product dispensers and waste receptacles. If you have any questions about the availability of these products, please contact your school's health office or building principal.
Holiday Concert
Here are a few photos from the band and choir holiday concert. Thank you to everyone who came out to support. The turn out was great!

Equal Opportunity Schools
As you know, Fridley High School is committed to fostering the highest quality learning experience for its students. As one example of this commitment, the district has partnered with Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS), a non-profit education organization, to examine and develop the learning culture within our schools and to develop strategies to increase student participation in challenging high school coursework.
To support these goals, we will be encouraging all students to participate in a brief survey sometime between January 3rd and January 19th during the school day. Survey questions will address students’ views on their coursework, their school experience, and the ways in which our school supports their educational goals. Results will only be used to inform and improve academic supports for students now and in the years to come.
For your security, all confidential records provided by the district are subject to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and to any state law student confidentiality provisions. EOS and Fridley Public Schools will ensure that in the course of the work, confidential information of any individual student or parent will not be accessed by anyone other than district personnel and EOS personnel performing services for the district.
We foresee only positive benefits for your student(s) and are excited to gather data that will enable us to better prepare all students to succeed. If you have any questions or concerns about the survey, or the partnership more generally, please do not hesitate to contact Lamii Zarlee, FHS Assistant Principal. Please know that you may also withdraw your child’s participation at any time and for any reason.

Students of the Month
Congratulations to these students for being recognized this month by their teachers for their incredible contributions to the learning environment and school community. These students demonstrate responsibility, respect, and realness in their classes at FHS. Way to go!
Extended Essay Silver Platter Breakfast
On December 20th, 16 Diploma Programme Candidates of the Class of 2024 were recognized as they presented their International Baccalaureate (IB) Extended Essays to supervisors. The extended essay is a compulsory, externally assessed piece of independent research into a topic chosen by the student and presented as a formal piece of academic writing. The extended essay is intended to promote high-level research and writing skills, intellectual discovery and creativity while engaging students in personal research. This leads to a major piece of formally presented, structured writing of up to 4,000 words in which ideas and findings are communicated in a reasoned, coherent and appropriate manner.
Students are guided through the process of research and writing by an assigned supervisor (a teacher in the school). All students undertake three mandatory reflection sessions with their supervisor, including a short interview, or viva voce, following the completion of the extended essay.
The aims of the extended essay are to provide students with the opportunity to:
• engage in independent research with intellectual initiative and rigor
• develop research, thinking, self-management and communication skills
• reflect on what has been learned throughout the research and writing process.
We are so proud of these students as they meet another milestone in their IB education.

Nutritional Services
Thank you to all the students who ate breakfast and lunch with us. We encourage all students to grab breakfast from the cafeteria before school starts. Students must take the breakfast entree and at least one serving of fruit. We offer a variety of cold and hot items depending on the menu. Come check our breakfast and it will help you focus during the day. Second chance breakfast is available; however, it is only for a brief amount of time when offered.
Reminder that all students can receive one breakfast and lunch a no charge daily. The meals at no charge include the main entree and at least ½ cup of fruit or vegetable. Students can take more fruits and vegetables if they want to, we just ask that they eat what they take. Students who take a second breakfast or additional entrees will be charged for those meals. Students must have money in their account to cover the costs. Please remind your student that they must have their lunch bar code and money in their account to purchase Ala Carte. Please talk with your student about their spending limits and what items can be purchased.
We look forward to seeing your student at breakfast and lunch. If you have any questions about the menus please contact Renee Arbogast at 763-502-5022.
