MESSAGE FROM MRS. MAURO
MESSAGE FROM MRS. MACGREGOR
Hello Valerius Families. I would like to personally thank you for your kind and generous donations to both our “Socktober” sock collection and our Share and Care Donation Drive. We surpassed our school goal by collecting 317 pairs of socks for the Urbandale Clothing Closet, and our food drive surpassed all our expectations by collecting over $2000 worth of needed products for the Urbandale Food Pantry. Thank you so much for helping our students learn about sharing our gifts with others. You are all greatly appreciated!
In Guidance classes, we have wrapped up our first unit on Skills for Learning. The younger students (K-2) focused on specific skills that we call “Whole Body Listening." These skills are:
1. eyes watching
2. ears listening
3. hands down and still
4. feet down and still
5. mouth quiet
6. brain thinking about what the speaker is saying.
All of these things need to work together to help us be an effective listener. You can practice these skills at home, too! Encourage your students to do all six of these things before you give directions. Our older students have been working on about identifying priorities and setting SMART goals. SMART goals are:
1. Specific
2. Measurable
3. Attainable
4. Relevant (Do I care about this enough to work hard to reach my goal?)
5. Time bound.
You can help your students at home by talking about their goals (both school goals and goals outside of school) with them and by helping them focus on their priorities. You can ask, “What should you be doing first? Doing your chores or playing a video game?” Doing your chores is your priority. Helping students establish priorities will directly help them in school and many other areas of their lives. Thanks in advance for supporting our learning at home! For more helpful tips and suggestions on how you can reinforce these skills at home, please see the following links:

MESSAGE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Head Lice
Just a reminder as a district we no longer send out health grams. It is important to remember and assumed that head lice are in the community and schools at all times. The best defense is early detection and treatment. Checking your child’s hair thoroughly once a week throughout the school year will help with early detection.
Please also be thinking about sleepovers and other activities where children’s heads are close together or personal items may be inadvertently shared. There is a much higher likelihood of transmission in those settings than in school. Generally, heads need to be touching or there would need to be live lice on hats/pillows/brushes being shared.
If head lice or nits are found, we recommend that you treat your child and ask that you follow up with other parents if there was a recent play date or sleep over.
When treating the head lice, please follow The Iowa Department of Public Health guidelines with the two-week treatment plan (noted below). The treatment days are scheduled to interrupt the lifecycle of the insect. A nit comb should be used to comb the hair and can be bought at most pharmacies. By treating properly, it will help reduce the spread of head lice.
Treatment Calendar
Day 1: Medicated Shampoo
Day 2: COMB only, DO NOT WASH
Day 3: Shampoo, condition and comb
Day 4: Shampoo, condition and comb
Day 5: Shampoo, condition and comb
Day 6: Shampoo, condition and comb
Day 7: Shampoo, condition and comb
Day 8: Shampoo, condition and COMB
Day 9: Shampoo, condition and COMB
Day 10: Medicated Shampoo
Day 11: COMB only, DO NOT WASH
Day 12: Shampoo, condition and COMB
Day 13: Shampoo, condition and COMB
Day 14: Shampoo, condition and COMB
Winter Weather and Appropriate Attire
As long as the temperature feels like 10 degrees with wind chill the children will go out to recess. Please remember to send your children in hats, gloves, and winter coats every day. Unfortunately we do not have enough extras to supply children with missing items from the health office.
If your child would like to play in the snow or on the play equipment/field area, they will need to have both SNOW PANTS and BOOTS.
Attendance Phone Number (515) 457-6503

Everyone's a Scientist Night!
Below is some feedback we received from you. If you have any other comments or questions, please contact Jill Miller at millerj@urbandaleschools.com
It was wonderful!!! I can't say enough positive things about it! It was very well organized, experiments were hands-on and engaging, and taking home materials was the icing on the cake!
We enjoyed the entire evening, I think the format was great!
More time for science experiments! We were sad when 6:30 came and we had to stop.
It was great! Loved having the J-Leaders involved. The kids loved the hands on building and testing.
