Reminder: ‘No School’ on Monday, January 16th, In Observance Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there will be no school and no Adventuretime on Monday, January 16, 2023. The UCSD Administration Office is also closed. This national holiday is often referred to as the “MLK Day of Service” as people of all ages join in acts of kindness through service to others. School will resume on Tuesday, January 17 for all UCSD students. For quick reference, here is a link to our school calendars.

Powerschool Parent Portal Accounts

In an effort to streamline communication between Urbandale School District and student parents and guardians, we are in the process of creating parent portal accounts in our student information system, Powerschool. Previously, only parents in grades 6-12 had access to the parent portal. We are expanding this access to the elementary level. You may receive an email notifying you that an account has been created. You will get more information about logging in and user names/passwords during conferences. You don’t need to do anything right now. This is part of our preparations to give you greater access to your student’s school information during the 2023-24 school year.

School Apps Available at Home

Students are able to access School Apps, like BookFlix or Dreambox, from home. Your student will need to sign into ClassLink. Click on the link below to access the ClassLink sign on page or you can also find this link under Quick Links on the UCSD Website.

Students can login using their QR code or manually entering their Username and Password. QR codes are used in grades K-2 and can be requested to be sent home by your student's teacher. If your student does not remember their username or password parents can reach out to the teacher or the main office for this information.

Heartland AEA Library

To support students and their families, Heartland AEA created annotated lists of K-12 books available for checkout from the Heartland AEA library. While many of the digital resources we provide are read-aloud or translated, there's nothing quite like a book in the hands of a reader.

Bosnian -- 91 titles

Ebooks and Iowa's Goldie's History Kits

Iowa AEAs are collaborating with the State Historical Society of Iowa to bring ebooks and audiobooks that are part of Goldie's History Kits. These digital kits are for K-5 educators to help meet the Iowa Core Standards for Social Studies and Literacy. The kits were created with a grant from the Library of Congress to encourage students to develop deeper connections to Iowa's history. What Parents Need To Know About Fentanyl—Community Forum January 17 (click for flyer)
Urbandale Community School District is hosting a community forum regarding the dangers of fentanyl. Fentanyl is a deadly synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. U.S. Department of Justice Assistant Attorneys Mallory Weiser and MacKenzie Tubbs will share critical information about counterfeit pills, warning signs, NARCAN, and how social media is impacting distribution. Attendees will also gain an understanding of Des Moines metro area statistics on seizures of fentanyl, drug cases, and overdoses. The forum is the next session in the District’s “Parent University” program. All metro area parents and guardians are welcome to attend this free event.

The Urbandale Community School District (UCSD) welcomes your preschool and/or kindergarten student(s)! We take great care in creating a culture of learning in our classrooms to help make the transition to preschool and kindergarten a positive experience for your child(ren) and family. Our focus is to help each child learn, grow, and achieve success on the pathway of lifelong learning. We’re looking forward to welcoming your child(ren) and family this fall!

PTO Cookie Dough Fundraiser

Our Valerius PTO is doing a Cookie Dough fundraiser that will began January 6th! Funds raised will help purchase classroom materials and support the work of the Valerius PTO. This is a wonderful fundraiser as each tub sold gives Valerius $7. This year Karen Acres will also be partnering with us in anticipation of our new building next year! Coming home in your student’s bag will be a flyer with all of the information about the seven types of cookie dough available for purchase, plus an order form on the back side.

Please keep careful track on the order form of requested purchases. Order forms are due back to school on January 19th. Please make sure your student’s name and a parent contact phone number are on the form.

Uplifting Urbandale

Rolling Green 5th grade English Language Learner (ELL) students are honing their broadcasting skills with their latest innovative project-the "Urbandale Memory Masters" podcast. Rolling Green ELL Teacher Laura Beth Vander Ploeg was awarded a Making A Difference Grant from the Urbandale Schools and Alumni Foundation (URBSAF) which provided the ability to purchase podcast equipment.
