Prairie Trail Elementary School Newsletter
A Message from Principal Wendi Vaughn
As we finish up week three, things are running smooth. The staff members have worked to make this happen. Part of making sure everyone is on the same page is knowing what is expected from your child's teacher. If you were unable to attend Parent Orientation with your child's teacher, no worries, they can email you the slide show they reviewed. They shared their slideshows with parents after the meeting. If you missed that information, don't hesitate to reach out. They will be happy to email it to you again.
During Parent Orientation, teachers shared a video from Dr. Rapp discussing the upcoming Bond and Vatre. If you missed that video, you can watch it here. LISD has created a website for community members to learn more: https://www.lisd.net/bond.
We do so many incredible things at PTE, it is hard to share all of it. One way to connect with your child each day is to ask about their day. However, if your kiddos are like mine, your conversation may sound like this,
Parent, "How was your day?"
Child, "Fine."
Parent, "What did you do?"
Child, "Nothing."
Try asking them to tell you one great thing that happened today at school and one thing you wish had gone differently. I started getting more interesting answers with this approach which helped us start better conversations.
We have our first early dismissal on Friday., September 1st. Many have asked what these days are used for throughout the year. Some are used for Professional Learning and curriculum planning with our staff. The ones that fall at the end of a 9-weeks are used for finishing up grades and getting ready for a new 9-weeks. Hope this gives you a little more insight into early dismissal days.
Update on our PTA membership challenge with Timber Creek Elementary School is still going very well, but Timber Creek is gaining on us! You can see more about it below. We are up to 395 memberships. I really don't want to wear a Timber Creek t-shirt!!
See below for how to join for only $11.75.
That's it on the Trail this week.

Attendance/Absences/Illnesses
There are no longer pre-arranged absences in LISD. After the absence, you will need to be sure to send a parent note.
Each child can be absent up to 10 times with parent and/or doctor's notes. It is NOT recommended that you use all 10. Children do better in school when they are at school.
We are already seeing an uptick with students with fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. There are no additional protocols for COVID any more. We are to treat it like any other illness.
What does that mean?
Students must be fever free, vomit free, and diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school with improving symptoms regardless of what the illness is.
For more information about Attendance and Absences: https://www.lisd.net/Page/22254
Tardies
The tardy bell rings at 7:45 am. Your child needs to be in their classroom, in their seat at 7:45 am in order to be counted on time.
Cutting down on tardies is a goal. We have some fun incentives for the students who are getting here on time everyday. We also have some consequences for students and families who are struggling in this area.
We are sending warning emails and phone calls to families with 3 and 4 tardies. After the 5th tardy, parents will be asked to attend an Attendance Matters parent meeting.
After the 6th tardy, parents will start signing their child(ren) in every morning between 7:15-7:30 am for 21 days. It takes 21 days to break a habit and make a new one.
We want to work with you to ensure that your child does not lose credit because of excessive tardies. Our school nurse, counselor, attendance clerk, teachers, and administrators will work with you as necessary to address specific needs and family situations.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this letter or your child’s attendance, please call Monica Saucedo, Attendance Clerk, for assistance at 469-713-5980 or email her at saucedomonica@lisd.net.

We are SO excited about the return of the PTA reflections program this year. Reflections has been a staple arts program in many schools for 50 years. This year’s theme is “I AM HOPEFUL BECAUSE…”
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
- Click HERE to view a short video about the program and more information.
- Encourage your child to express their creativity by creating an original work of art related to the theme in any of the 6 categories.
- Submit your child’s art HERE by Monday, October 16 (artwork can also be emailed to artsineducation@prairietrailpta.org or turned in to their teacher along with the completed form)

RESTOCK THE SNACK PANTRY
Throughout the year, our amazing PTA provides a snack pantry for our kiddos who might have forgotten their snack or need a little extra support with their meals. 🥪🍎 But, we can't do it without the generous donations from all of YOU! 🙌
Help us kick-start the year with a fully stocked snack pantry by donating a box of individually wrapped nut-free snacks like pretzels, goldfish, or applesauce pouches. Donations can be dropped off in the front office or shop our Amazon wish list HERE and select “Prairie Trail Elementary” to have it shipped directly.

PRAIRIE TRAIL NAMED A 2022-2024 NATIONAL PTA SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE
Prairie Trail was recently named a 2022-2024 National PTA School of Excellence. National PTA’s School of Excellence program supports and celebrates partnerships between PTAs and schools that work to improve the educational experience and school environment for every child. Prairie Trail and Prairie Trail PTA are one of only 368 PTAs and schools nationwide to be designated a 2022-2024 School of Excellence!
The School of Excellence program provided guidance to assist our school in engaging families in school decision-making, and help our school build inclusive policies related to increasing volunteer opportunities. Becoming a National PTA School of Excellence began with the joint commitment of PTA and our phenomenal administrative team to work together to welcome all families, communicate effectively, support student success, speak up for every child, share power and collaborate with the community.
To celebrate our achievements, National PTA will present Prairie Trail and Prairie Trail PTA with a certificate and a National PTA School of Excellence banner to hang in the school.
Thank you for your commitment to our school community. Thank you for helping us reach this noteworthy milestone for our school and community.
