Literacy Updates - January 2024
For the January newsletter, we want to share our progress toward this year's literacy goal in a timeline form. We continue to make strides toward implementing a number of assessment and intervention tools. Thank you for following our progress and asking questions.
Literacy: The Timeline
Here’s a little recap of what we’ve been doing so far this year with our literacy work, and what’s coming up:
Beginning of the year: Began using our new ELA materials (Open Court, Wonders), which use a systematic, structured approach to teaching reading.
September: Students grades 1-3 participated in literacy screening.
October: Teachers reviewed data from literacy screening, established groups for intervention time, and late in the month, began meeting with their groups on a daily basis. Diagnostic assessments began for students whose screener scores were below benchmarks.
November: Diagnostic assessments continued. Intervention time continued. In late November, teachers gave the first round of progress monitoring checks for students in their intervention groups.
December: Diagnostic assessments will continue. Intervention time will continue, too.
January: Mid-year literacy screening will be conducted grades 1-3. Intervention groups and progress monitoring will continue.
February: Teachers will meet to review screener scores, along with progress monitoring data and diagnostic data. Intervention groups may be adjusted depending on students’ needs. Intervention time and progress monitoring will continue.
March-April: Intervention and progress monitoring will continue.
April-May: End-of-year literacy screening will be conducted. The results will help us reflect on the progress made during the 2023-24 school year and also help us plan for the 2024-25 school year. From the Clinic
As we return to school after winter break, here is a reminder of when students should stay home from school. We appreciate you sending students to school if you are unsure if they should remain at home or you want them to "give it a try". Thank you for continuing to make school attendance a priority!

The team of mobile dentists will once again be coming to NES on February 7th! The dentist can perform cleanings and fillings. Be on the lookout and return this form by January 15 to secure a spot!
