Swann Lion Times

In 6th grade, our Lions are studying expressions and equations in Math, learning about ancient Greece in Social Studies, studying waves in Science, and working with plot development in ELA.

In 7th grade, our Lions are studying genetics in Science, expressions and equations in Math, continuing their WWII study in Social Studies, and working on physical and social setting in their mystery unit in ELA.

In 8th grade, our Lions are learning about the end of WWI and the suffrage movement in Social Studies, working on their science fiction unit in ELA, starting ecology in Science, and working with linear equations in Math.

Have you heard your student talk about MTSS or did you hear about it at one of our State of School events? MTSS is a tiered system of support designed to meet students where they are academically and help them grow. The first 30 minutes of our school day is spent in MTSS block. Students were placed into groups based on their NWEA testing data, and in that 30 minutes, they receive targeted interventions and enrichment activities to help them move forward in their reading or math skills. Ask your Lion to tell you more about what they are working on in MTSS and encourage them to read each night and practice their math skills at home!

This week our Spanish Immersion 6th graders started a new short story "El trabajo en el campo" and practiced new vocabulary from the story. See if you Leon can tell you what gesticular, escollo, and esceptico mean.

Our STEM students have made flying machines to explore lift and propulsion. They designed and tested their devices and graphed the results of the flight competition. This week, our Lions worked on car designs in CTE, learned about nutritious food choices in FACS, played dodgeball in PE, attended health classes, and our 8th grade orchestra performed for Cone and Jones rising 6th graders. Ask your student all about what they are doing in their Encore classes!

This month, the Swann Pride is focusing on PERSEVERANCE! Watch this video about grit and perseverance with your child. What are some ways they show grit at home? At school? In your personal life? Why is persevering important to your future?

A huge Swann Lion thank you to James B. Waddell II, the Cone Health Systemwide Patient Care Support Manager for coordinating the donation of 1260 bottles of water for our Swann STEM classes!

Remember the cut off time for early pick up in the afternoon is 3:45. After 3:45, please join the pickup line at the back of the school. This helps us ensure a safe dismissal for all students and ensures our buses are able to queue properly in front of the school.
