CHS Family Update
April 13th, 2020
In The Know
School is Closed - Wednesday the Governor made the announcement that schools will be closed for the remainder of the year and students are to engage in distant learning. We know that this is a hard decision to make and it has strong impacts on students and families across the board. We are working to ensure students have meaningful opportunities to connect online with their teachers and each other, all while trying to find meaningful ways to recognize and celebrate our Seniors. More to follow on this.
Graduation Requirements - In addition to closing schools for the year the governor announced some new guidelines regarding graduation requirements for seniors. We know you are anxious about how these guidelines will impact you. Our counselors are still working on the understanding all the details. You may see some shifts in your students schedule over the next few days, this is because counselors will be making adjustments to be sure students are able graduate under these new guidelines. Once details have been finalized counselors will be in touch about next steps. Please do not email counselors at this time so they can focus on these new guidelines.
A few things about Trimester 3
1. Attendance - Students are expected to make contact with their teachers at least once per week in order to maintain current attendance during trimester 3. This could look like a reply to an email, submitting an assignment, attending office hours, etc. Attendance will start being taken the week of April 20th. Attendance will be submitted by end of day Friday and Robo calls will go home for students who have not made contact with their teachers.
2. Teachers have established office hours and they are available on our school website. https://chs.4j.lane.edu/distance-learning-teacher-office-hours/
3. Please know that our College and Career specialists Sheree Houck and Mary Beth Hepp Elam are available to students for transition support. Please feel free to contact them with questions or concerns.
4. Please be sure to have your Senior sign up for Advisory. We will be sending out regular information about Senior activities, events, and potential graduation alternatives as we progress through the term.
Online Resources - More resources for kids and parents in English and Spanish on how to use Google Classroom thanks to Amy Page and Stacey Morris. Please share as needed.
- How to Join a Google Classroom in English AND Spanish: This will be great for English and Spanish as the English resources we found do not demonstrate how to join a classroom.
- Accessing Google Classroom at Home for Parents and Kids - Spanish: This explains how to access Google Classroom as well as how to join a class (all in one!).
- Google Classroom Parent Tutorial (iPad) Spanish: This explains it from the iPad perspective which is a bit different.

From Oregon Health Authority: We know that during times of uncertainty, the potential risk of suicide and mental health crisis increases; we also know that suicide is preventable. With this in mind, QPR (a 75 minute training to sharpen and develop skills in seeing and responding to people in suicidal crisis) has been made available. We are specifically encouraging all school staff to enroll in this course which is provided free by OHA for everyone including parents, healthcare workers, and everyone else. QPR is a training that we encourage people to take more than once, so if you’ve already taken QPR in the past, you are still welcome to enroll.
The QPR Gatekeeper course is taught in a clear, concise format using the latest in educational technology and practices. The course takes approximately one hour to complete.
Key components covered in training:
· How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal.
· How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
· The common causes of suicidal behavior.
· The warning signs of suicide.
· How to get help for someone in crisis.
All courses are:
· Evidence-Based
· Heavily Tested
· Peer-Reviewed
· Qualify for Continuing Education Credits
Trainings are provided by Certified QPR Instructors in Oregon. This training is being offered at no cost through OHA on the following dates:

Kudos
Misael Flores - Thank you for driving around town hand delivering computers to students. Misael even went so far to drive all the way to Creswell to get a student a computer so that he could get logged in to school and participate. Your flexibility and willingness to support kids is evident in your strong caring disposition for kids. They are lucky to have you supporting them as is Churchill High School.
Thank you and kudos to Elizabeth Henderson for coordinating Churchill High Schools first ever virtual Spirit Week. Such a fun and engaging thing to do while quarantined. It really helps support C-Hill culture and community.
