From the Principal's Office
Dear Scholars, Parents, and Guardians,
The first month of school is now behind us. We are well on our way towards an exciting and promising school year. School and classroom culture is being established, routines are becoming the norm, and expectations are understood by all.
This month, we begin to add extra-curricular activities in the form of after school clubs. Parents and students had the opportunity to sign up for clubs and were notified on Friday of their assignments.
Didn’t get a chance to sign up, or would like to join an additional club? Reach out to Mr. Field at justin.field@pgcps.org. We first want to make sure every interested student has a club to participate in. After that, if there is room, students can sign up for additional clubs.
First Quarter Progress Reports will be available in Schoolmax on Thursday, October 5th. Progress Reports are a snapshot of student progress midway through the quarter. The purpose is to allow parents and students to address areas of growth for improvement throughout the remainder of the quarter.
What is the routine for homework, studying, and practice at home?
No assignments due? This is a good opportunity to review notes and practice skills taught in class.
Athletes don’t become great by completing practice drills. They become great by putting in the extra work to perfect those skills outside of practice. Similarly, students don’t learn by simply attending school, they become great learners by studying and practicing the skills outside of school.
Educationally Yours,
Principal Andrew Brauer, M. Ed
Attendance
Examples of Lawful Absences include: death in the immediate family, illness, suspension, observance of religious holidays, court summons, etc.
Please be sure to provide a note to the school when your child is absent. Electronic notes are also accepted using this link https://shorturl.at/kmoL4
Families are encouraged to refer to Administrative Procedure 5113 for more information.
SchoolMax Family Portal
We are almost halfway through Quarter 1. Can you believe it? Parents are encouraged to login regularly to monitor their scholar’s progress. Additionally, be sure to update your contact information in the Family Portal. This is the information that the school will use to send emails, texts, and robo-calls to keep you informed. If you encounter any issues accessing or updating your Family Portal please visit:
Free and Reduced Meal Applications
All parents are encouraged to apply for Free or Reduced Meal Services (FARMS). This information impacts school funding which equals $$dollars$$ in our classrooms.
Even if parents don't think they qualify, they are encouraged to apply at MySchoolApps.com. Online applications are processed within 24-48 hours.
Students who are not eligible for free or reduced-priced meals must pay for their meals. See Meal Prices. Parents and guardians can easily monitor and add funds to student meal accounts using MySchoolBucks.
Fire Drill
On September 29th, we conducted our first fire drill of the school year. Scholars practiced how to evacuate the building in a safe and orderly manner in case of an emergency. Once each scholar has evacuated the building with their class, the teachers take role to ensure that all students are accounted for.
Fire drills are conducted once a month, at different times of the day, so that students will know and practice using the quickest route to exit the building according to their class location.
Uniform Checks
Uniform checks have begun. The expectation is that all students are now in full uniform. Students will first be given a warning and one week to correct the infraction.Common infraction are shoes (Shoes must be all black, including soles and laces), and the PE uniform (non CMIT sweatpants/shorts are not permitted)
First violation: Parent contact via PRS points, telephone, email or text message. Uniform violation log must be completed by the student. Student’s classroom privileges may be removed.
Second violation: Parent contact via PRS points, telephone, email or text message. Uniform violation log must be completed by the student. Parent contact and/or conference, loss of privileges, detention, etc. may be part of the consequences.
Third violation: Detention and/or in school suspension
Fourth and subsequent violations: Administration will administer a disciplinary consequence in accordance with the PGCPS Code of Student Conduct. This disciplinary consequence may result in out of school suspension. The severity of the infraction and the student’s willingness to cooperate with school officials and adhere to the standards of the dress code will be factored into disciplinary consequences.
Math Corner
Emphasizing the M in CMIT!
In math class, scholars are expected to show their work and not just provide their answers, engage in discourse and writing to math tasks. This process assist scholars when it they are prompted to explaining their reasoning or modeling. Reasoning and Modeling tasks are in the curriculum as well as on the MCAP Math assessment. To support at home, have your scholar explain how they solved one of their problems (basic computation or word problem).
Definition:
1) Mathematical Reasoning- is an evolving process of conjecturing, generalizing, investigating why, and developing and evaluating arguments.
-2) Modeling- is the process of choosing and using appropriate mathematics to analyze real-world situations, to understand them better, and to improve decisions.
*If your scholar could benefit from multiplication or division practice, this is a good website to utilize https://webmathminute.com/.
Arrival/Departure Routine
Arrival/Departure Routine
Please see the Traffic Flow Map of the driving routes and drop-off/pick-up locations. Please note: All parents, carpooling or individuals, must drop off and pick up in the rear of the building. The side parking lots are designated for high school overflow and commercial vans/buses only. Only students that ride on a commercial van or bus will be permitted to exit to the side parking lot.
As you pull into the car line, please pull as far forward as possible so more cars can pull in behind you. This will speed up the overall process safely.
Everyone will become more accustomed to the drop-off and pick-up routine as the school year progresses. The process will become more and more efficient. Typically, by the third week of school, all vehicles are gone within 15 minutes of the dismissal bell.
Please be patient and follow the instructions from those directing traffic. No one's time is more valuable than the safety of OUR children. It takes all of us, faculty and parents, working together to ensure a safe environment at all times.
Please complete the Dismissal Questionnaire.
