Viking Pride Assembly
Monday, October 31st
Thank you for sharing in our virtual Viking Pride Assemblies for the last two years. It has been an awesome way to recognize our students. This year we will shift to school day assemblies for students. All 450 kids will gather in the gym to celebrate each month. This is a great opportunity for our younger students to learn from their older peers and for our intermediate students to show leadership.
If your student wins an award you will hear from the classroom teacher. We will continue to print and send home certificates and will publish both a short video and a grade level photo on our Facebook page. Due to space constraints this will be a student/staff only event.
Thank you for your support and partnership. We love celebrating the growth of our students. Our first assembly will be on Monday, October 31st.
Personal Devices
We understand at Bonney Lake Elementary that personal mobile devices (specifically, Smartwatches) are becoming increasingly common on the wrists of our students per parent request. In order to support and comply with our district policy as stated in the 22-23 Student and Family Information Guide (pp.36-37), we are asking for your support with the following:
Cell phones should remain in backpacks and are not to be used during the school day.
Smartwatches must remain in “school mode” during the school day. (If you have the option as the parent to set this “mode” up on the device, we are asking for your support with this.) This means that the watch should be used for telling time only and may not be used for calling or texting during the school day.
If you are in need of getting a message to your child, please contact our main office. It is critical that any changes in transportation be communicated directly to the office by 3:15pm so that we can ensure your child can be safely supported by the BLE staff at the end of the school day.
Smartwatches (and cell phones) may not be used for taking pictures or video while at school or on the bus ride to/from school. If a Smartwatch becomes a distraction to classroom instruction, the teacher or administrator may ask the student to put it into the backpack for the day.
Thank you for your partnership and ongoing support.
The Weather is Changing
The weather is changing and we have many rainy days ahead. Please remember to send your student to school with proper coats and shoes. Outdoor recess is only cancelled if there are severe weather concerns such as high winds or thunder and lightning.
Please consider writing your student’s name inside their coat in case it is left out at recess. This helps us return it to the correct student.
Lost and Found
We have an abundance of lost and found items. Please remind your student to check the lost and found in the 200 pod.
During Conference Week we will place the lost and found outside for families to look through.
School Picture Day with Perler Photography
Photos were taken Friday, October 21st. You can still order pictures if you haven't yet! Payments can be made online at: https://www.prepaysystems.com/view/3GXsp_rY/bonney-lake-elementary, or by using our QR code.
A Note From the Health Room
Vision and Hearing
Screening are on Friday, October 28th for all grades, except 4th grade. If your student wears corrective lenses, please make sure they have them and that the lenses are clean. If you do not want your child screened, please contact Mrs. Fossum in the health room prior to Friday.
Common Health Conditions
Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is a common infection affecting one or both eyes that causes the white of the eye to appear pink or red. Vision is usually normal; however, the eye may water profusely and feel irritated. Eyelids may be swollen. A discharge of liquid or mucus from the infected eye may occur. Eyelids and lashes may become crusted and stick together as the mucus hardens, particularly while sleeping. The student may complain of itching, pain, or sensitivity to light.
Conjunctivitis is commonly caused by viruses or bacteria that may first manifest in one eye and then spread to the other eye within days. Viral conjunctivitis usually produces a clear, watery discharge. Bacterial conjunctivitis usually produces a thicker, yellow-green discharge. Eyelids stuck together after sleeping are most common with bacterial conjunctivitis.
Conjunctivitis may also be caused from allergens, such as cosmetics or pollen; reaction to air pollutants, such as dust or smoke; and foreign bodies in the eye, such as contact lenses. Certain chronic illnesses may also cause conjunctivitis.
Here are a few ways to prevent pink eye:
- Reinforce the practice of frequent handwashing.
- Educate students not to share personal items that touch the eyes, such as towels and cosmetics.
- Educate students with conjunctivitis not to share school equipment that touches the eyes, such as microscopes.
- Remember that a source of recurrent eye infections may be contact lenses, solution, or cosmetics.
- Remind students to wear, handle, store, and clean their contact lenses as instructed by their licensed eye care provider.
- Remind students that eye cosmetics and applicators used during the infection should be discarded.
- Seek to identify and remove the source of possible eye allergens and irritants.

As a reminder, PTA memberships need to be renewed annually. Membership packets were sent home last Friday.
Fall Carnival will be from 5:30-7:00 pm on Friday, October 28th. This is a free event for all BLE families. Come join us for a fun fall event. Concessions will be available for purchase.
