Technology at Clayton Ridge Elementary!
Mrs. Deb Henkes, District Technology Coach
The goals for technology use at Clayton Ridge Elementary is to enhance and build on classroom learning targets, build a fundamental understandings of technology processes, help students engage in positive and safe behavior when using technology, and increase active student engagement and collaboration with technology.
Beginning with the 2018-19 school year each student at CREL is assigned either an iPad at the K-2 level or a repurposed laptop in grades 3-5. As this school year is the first year for iPads for each student at the lower level, students and teachers have been exploring the possibilities for learning with their new devices.
Two free apps that teachers have been using to tie all of the student learning together are Seesaw and Google Classroom. Seesaw is an app that allows students to submit their work to their digital student journal. As soon as they click “submit” both the teacher and connected parents have immediate access to their submission. Teachers are using Seesaw for so many different activities! Google Classroom's purpose is to facilitate paperless communication between teachers and students and streamline educational workflow. Classroom allows teachers to create classes, post assignments, organize folders, and view work in real-time.
Here are a few examples:

Hyperdocs Charge Learning in Grades 3-5
In grades three through five, students and teachers are busy using their laptops for Seesaw, IXL, MackinVia and more to extend their learning. Students are also diving into Google Tools such as Google Docs, Google Classroom and our favorite new tool, “Hyperdocs! A Hyperdoc uses various aspects of Google Docs to provide a continuous and interactive learning experience for students. Check out this 4/5th grade Simple Machines Hyperdoc, URL https://tinyurl.com/CRSimple
Promethean Panels in the Classroom
In addition, the district has begun to update a few of the older SMART Boards with new Promethean Panels. The panels are interactive touch screen devices that allow students and teachers to interact with apps, websites and more. Pictured is Mrs. Bodish using her Promethean panel for math with her kindergarteners.
Blogging in Second Grade
This is just a snapshot of a few of the examples of how technology is being used on a daily basis at CREL to enhance, extend and engage student learning. Marble Run Madness in Fourth Grade
Mrs. Jill Stannard, 4/5 Teacher and Mrs. Deb Henkes, District Technolgy Coach
Critical thinking, problem-solving, using engineering concepts and teamwork are not only career-ready skills but also essential components for a successful "Marble Run"! Students in Mrs. Lawrence's and Mrs. Stannard's 4th grades classes were recently challenged to use all of these skills to create a marble course where the winning marble travels to the end destination in the SLOWEST overall time (not the fastest!) without stopping.
4th Graders designed and built towers, ramps and loops using cardboard tubes, paper plates and tape. Their challenge was to have 3 runs .
Students had twenty minutes to design their course. They then ran three timed trials. Demonstrations and results were shared with their teachers and students in other grade levels.

Math can be So Sweet
HIgh school math instructor Mr. Rick Kolbet had the students use M&Ms in an experiment to introduce “Optimization” in his Calculus class. Students used an 11x14 inch of tagboard and had to design a container to hold the maximum number of M&Ms. The winning team won an entire jar of M&Ms, courtesy of Mr. Kolbet. After the experiments, the students were shown how to use calculus with derivatives to calculate the actual maximum volume the containers should have been able to hold. CRHS Business Students Participate in Mock Collective Bargaining
On April 3 business students attended the Dubuque Area Labor-Management Council’s Mock Collective Bargaining Simulation at the NICC in Peosta.
Students learned how to bargain a contract for a fictitious business. Each team had an experienced adult advisor help them though the process of negotiating the contract. Federal Mediators were there to give the students a realist experience. Students were given the contract in advance to study and negotiating techniques were practiced. This activity is by invitation only and Clayton Ridge was able to take students sponsored by the People’s State Bank in Guttenberg.
It was a great day and the students did an excellent job representing the school. They decided to dress up and it made a great impression on the adults involved. Mrs. Keehner has been taking students to this event for many years. “This is an excellent event and the students learn the language and practical side of negotiating contracts in a very realistic situation.”
ATTENTION: PARENTS OF 6TH GRADE AND 11TH GRADE STUDENTS
The Iowa Immunization Law requires:
· All students entering 7th grade to have the Meningococcal vaccine AND a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis or whooping cough) booster before school starts in the fall.
· All students entering 12th grade to have a second dose of the Meningococcal vaccine before school starts this fall. This dose must be given after the age of 16. (One dose meets the requirement if it was received when the child was 16 years of age or older.)
Documentation on an updated Certificate of Immunization showing that your child has received the vaccine will need to be provided to the school nurse prior to the first day of school in August, unless the student has a Certificate of Exemption. If your child has already received the vaccine/vaccines, simply provide the updated record to the school.
Pertussis (whooping cough) is a very contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits that make it hard to breathe.
Meningococcal disease is a life-threatening illness that is caused by bacteria that infects the brain, blood, and spinal cord. It easily spreads in crowded settings.
There will be NO grace/extension period for the implementation of this requirement.
All students entering 7th and 12th grade will need to show proof that they have received the Meningococcal vaccine (and all students entering 7th grade will need to show proof that they have received the Tdap booster), or have a Certificate of Immunization Exemption before school starts in August. Students who have not received the vaccines (or have an exemption on file) will be excluded from school until the vaccines have been administered.
Now is a great time to get these vaccines and beat the back-to-school rush by scheduling an appointment for your child. Remember to get an updated copy of your child’s immunization record to provide to the school after he or she has received the vaccine. (Please submit the updated immunization record to the school nurse as soon as possible after your child receives the immunization.)
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school nurse or health care provider.
