LHS Families and Staff,
Lincoln High School is an inclusive public school, home to many students and families with ties to Israel and Paelstine. Our hearts are with all who have suffered from violent attacks, injustice and war. It has been heartbreaking to witness the events as they have unfolded. Our PPS Superintendent sent a message of support to PPS families today. In case you missed it please see it here.
As an internationally focused school community, we are committed to educating students to create a more just and peaceful world. When war and conflicts erupt, students may be impacted in a host of different ways. Some students and staff may be worried about family members who are serving in the military, others may approach the news as inquirers or question the accuracy of what they are seeing, and some may experience deep feelings of sadness, loss, anxiety, and fear. Others respond with anger and feelings of alienation. We seek to listen to learn and better understand, and also to help students understand a variety of perspectives. We also support students and staff to access resources.
At Lincoln, we prioritize student safety and emotional well-being. We want all students to feel safe and have a sense of belonging at Lincoln. One of the ways we are doing this is through classroom instruction that includes restorative justice/listening/reflection circles and other activities for social emotional learning. We are also focusing on increasing safety and a sense of belonging through our work to re-establish a No Place For Hate chapter at Lincoln. It is our goal to help teach students how to listen to each other and have conversations through dialogue and peaceful discourse that taps into our Go Cards values; Global, Open-minded, Caring, Altruistic, Respectful /Restorative, and Supportive. Thank you to everyone at home for helping model these values.
Our No Place for Hate partners from the anti-defamation league (ADL) have shared this message and resources for us and we wanted to share them with students and families as well:
“Dear No Place for Hate Coordinators We are closely following the recent events that began unfolding in Israel and Palestine over the weekend and understand the immense pain and challenge this presents for your students, families, and community. What happens in schools inevitably reflects the broader world, and it is vital that we acknowledge and address the impact of these events on our school communities. We want you to know that we at ADL are here to provide support as you navigate the conversations, lessons, and potential incidents related to the current situation in Israel and Gaza. Our commitment to fostering respect, honoring diversity, and promoting inclusion extends to assisting educators like you in addressing complex and sensitive topics. If you encounter any incidents or require guidance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. You can report incidents at: https://www.adl.org/report-incident. We are dedicated to creating and maintaining safe and respectful learning environments, and hope to share a few resources that can support your efforts to bring this vision to life.

Helping Students Make Sense of News Stories about Bias and Injustice
Your dedication to shaping young minds is invaluable, particularly during these challenging times.”
State education leaders from the Oregon department of Education have also shared this message and resources with educators and families:
“Oregon is home to students and staff with cultural and family ties to Israel and Palestine and has seen a rise in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents. As educators, we can provide a space for all community members to learn about current events, ask questions, and share thoughts.
It's likely students have been following these events, overheard conversations, and will continue to see images on social media. They will most likely be curious about the cause and impacts this war may have both globally and locally. To help students better understand this event and to place it in a broader context, we've gathered history/social science, mental health, and social and emotional learning resources to support teachers and families in assisting students.
It is also important to recognize that the adults in student's lives, including teachers, may also experience a range of emotions from the unfolding news reports and information shared by friends and family in the region. Please take care of yourself and seek support as needed.
In October's Social Science Newsletter, you’ll find the following resources:
Mental Health and Wellness Resources to support both students and staff.
Quick Reference to Applicable Oregon Standards for aligning classroom discussions.
Newly Updated Teaching Resources to provide fact checked information.
Resources for Civil Discourse to promote constructive conversations.
Oregon Open Learning and Social-Emotional Learning Resources for a comprehensive understanding and support mechanism.
Our highest priority remains consistent: to facilitate the intellectual and emotional growth of our students in a safe, compassionate, and rigorous environment. Let's work together to ensure that our classrooms remain spaces of knowledge, empathy, and belonging.”
Here at Lincoln High School we regularly share the following resources to students and families experiencing trauma and mental health struggles.
All students are welcome to come to the Student Services Center on the 2nd floor to connect with their counselor, LCSW Judy Herzberg, School Psychologist Gregg Sheldrake, or talk with VP Maude Lamont (9th Grade students) and VP Steve Pape (10th grade students). On the first floor Nurse Mary and Nury Courtney are always available for confidential conversations about physical and mental health. VP Travis Johnson is also in the Main Office (11th & 12th Grade students) as is Principal Chapman and her assistant Helen Yoon.

FlockFeast - Food Request form for LHS Families
These are challenging times. We get it! Lincoln students in FlockFeast Service Club have been teaming up with Clay Street Table Food Pantry to help supply families with food. Food will be bagged by students and can either be picked up at a local pantry (1314 SW Park Ave.) or at Lincoln High School. If pick up isn't possible, we may be able to deliver to a few families. Please let us know if you are interested by clicking this link , and a volunteer with Clay Street Table Pantry or FlockFeast will follow up and get details about what kinds of food would be helpful. We will also explain how confidentiality is respected.
