Hembree Highlights
February 2, 2024
Message from Ms. Lahey
Wow, this week went by so quickly. We had a great Best of the Nest celebration today. I loved seeing our Hawks smiling and happy. Our teachers are working hard to ensure your children have meaningful lessons every day. It is evident when I visit classrooms and see the student engagement. It makes me smile. I am making great progress in learning students' names. My goal is to know 90% before May.
I attended the general PTA meeting last evening and I have been appointed to the nominating committee. We need more parents for the PTA Board. This is a great way to get engaged and be a part of what happens here at Hembree. Working parents are welcome. The PTA is the backbone of the school and so many wonderful events happen because of our engaged PTA. We have several board members who will be leaving soon because their children are in the 4th and 5th grades. I am actively seeking new members. If you are interested, please send me an email. Thanks in advance for your support.
We will have our big event next Thursday, Hawks Take Flight (see information below). Please plan on coming and engaging with your child. This is a great opportunity to see firsthand all of the wonderful things happening here at Hembree. I can't wait to see you and your children at this event.
Have a great and relaxing weekend!
Sincerely,
Nancy Lahey

Teacher Grants
A total of $2,146 in teacher-initiated grants were just approved by the PTA! Funds were made possible from 2023's Silent Auction proceeds. Below is a list of the grants and how they'll be used:
Administration requested funds for the annual Staff Egg Hunt to boost teacher morale after spring break;
Administration also requested funds for Hawks Have Fun! for special events, treats, surprise activities for staff throughout the year to help with morale
IRR Special Education teacher Alexis Reddy has requested items for her classroom to give students a place to reset when they get dysregulated, such as a rug, bean bag, pillows and calming strategy visuals;
IRR Special Education teacher Tiffany McKibben requested supplies for the afterschool Garden Club, which helps encourage time outside, self-sufficiency and academic standards. Specifically, she needs storage for garden supplies and/or a hydrogarden;
Parent Liaison Lucy Gilbert requested funds for overall classroom supplies and equipment as specific teachers' needs arise;
5th grade teacher Natalie Kane requested funds to purchase supplies supporting learning enrichment programs for science and technology;
K-5 Math Coach Joey Waller will use funds for math tools and manipulatives in grades 3-5, which will cover a variety of hands-on learning opportunities for some of the more challenging learning targets, such as comparing fractions and ratios;
Kindergarten teacher Jordan DeLee will use funds to purchase two Osmo Genius starter kits for students to experience hands-on learning and digital fun while obtaining reading and math skills;
Paraprofessional Heidi Forsyth requested funds for reams of colored paper for herself and Kindergarten teacher Amica Chen Hill, who have currently had to borrow or purchase their own colored paper, as well as a paper holder to separate colors; and
2nd grade teacher Lisa Tejada and Media Center and Technology teacher Jenny Soberanis will use funds for the school Talent Show to showcase non-academic strengths and talents and for afterschool enrichment. The show has grown in participants each year and the time is volunteered by both teachers.
From Our Literacy Coach, Mrs. Mizzell
Monitor Meaning: The first step is read to your children at home but make it fun! ALL elementary children should be read to, from picture books to chapter books. Just because your child is in 4th or 5th grade does not mean they are too old to be read to. Take turns reading pages/chapters. While reading to your child, occasionally pause and explain your understanding of what is happing in the story. This modeling will teach children how to think about books on their own, and how to check that they are understanding the story. Ask your children questions about the characters' actions, the events in the story, the underlying message the author wants you to learn, and connections to other texts or experiences. Remember that our Media Center is available for both parents and students to check out books. Looking for additional supports? To check out additional resources, please reach out to Lucy Gilbert, Title I Parent Liaison, gilbertl2@fultonschools.org
Silent Auction Donations Needed
The PTA is gearing up for its biggest fundraiser of the year -- our silent auction. It's going live beginning of March. And we need your support! Maybe you own a small business, are a creator, teach lessons or have a service you can offer? Do you have season tickets to a venue? A vacation rental, perhaps? Or, you could have awesome connections to some local places. These would all be great things to put before bidders and raise money for a host of important school programs. Get in touch with us and we're happy to discuss! Email Sara Fuchs at sfuchs@gmail.com.
We are also looking for items to go in grade-level baskets that will be featured in the auction. Each grade level is creating a basket again this year for our Silent Auction Fundraiser. This is a wonderful and fun way to contribute to our fundraising goals. Last year, our Auction made just over $4,000 to fund the Teacher Grants program through the PTA! Each grade has a separate signup link, but please feel free to donate to any basket you like.
Any items donated for the basket must be unopened. Please be sure not to include anything that needs to be refrigerated or is perishable within a few days - these baskets will not be auctioned off until March.
If you would like to make a monetary contribution to help with our baskets, please do so here:
https://hembreespringselementary.memberhub.com/store/items/48153
On the donation form, be sure to note that it is for the Silent Auction fundraiser.
Please bring in all donations by Friday, February 16th, labeled with the following:
● Silent Auction Donation
● Your Name and/or Student’s Name
● Grade
● The basket theme the donation is for
We are so grateful for all of your help!
