Dear parents,
We are looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend! The annual Backyard Bash is this Friday (6-10 PM) and Saturday (1-10 PM). We will have games, food, and fun for all ages. Stop by the school's booth near the kid's games to say hello to our teachers and play our kid's game. Rumor has it that our own Mrs. Kingery and Mrs. Weaver will make an appearance in the dunk tank!
Some of the great Backyard Bash activities include:
- Bounce houses, games, pony rides, cake walk, and a petting zoo for the kids
- Fantastic food offerings from the Boy Scouts' pulled pork, local food trucks, African food from the Charles Lwanga Catholic Community of Indianapolis (Saturday afternoon only), and much more.
- Live music each night
- Casino games
- Cornhole tournament
- Texas Hold 'Em card tournament
For more information, see the graphic below or check out the Saint Susanna Catholic Church Facebook page. The Facebook page has a wealth of Backyard Bash information!
Our supply drop-off and meet the teacher is Sunday afternoon from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. Our first day of school is Tuesday, August 8th for preschool - 8th-grade students. Drop-off starts at 7:55 AM in the north part of the parking lot. You must be in line by 3:15 PM for afternoon pick-up. Please make every effort to be in line on time.
Start of the year parent checklist:
- Review car rider procedures: handouts, video
- Communicate with your child about how they are leaving school each day - car rider, extended day? Who is picking them up? You can also communicate this to your child's teacher.
- The back-to-school packets will be sent home on the first day of school. These packets contain PowerSchool and My School Bucks login information, free and reduced lunch letters and applications, a lunch menu, and more. Please review the information thoroughly and return the information sheet and medical forms promptly.
- Discuss school lunch with your child. Are they allowed to have a la carte items like water or extra entrees? Will they eat breakfast at school?
- Fund your child's lunch account. Payments for lunch can be made at www.myschoolbucks.com using the lunch number that will come home in the back-to-school packet. The August lunch menu is attached at the bottom of this email.
- Fund your child's Extended Day Ministry (EDM) account if you plan to use morning or aftercare. EDM payments can be made at www.saintsusannaschool.com/pay
- Order school uniforms for K-8 students if you have not yet done this - if you experience delays in the delivery of uniform shirts, please let me know.
- Remember that every Wednesday is a 2:50 PM dismissal.
We are looking forward to another great year at Saint Susanna!
God bless, Janet Abdoulaye

You will also see the theme throughout the building and on this year's theme shirt. Students are allowed to wear these shirts on Wednesdays with uniform bottoms. They are available through our spirit wear vendor Avon Sports Apparel and are listed on the fall spirit wear order form in the back-to-school packet. This is also in the links at the bottom of this newsletter. These shirts are ONLY available at the beginning of the year. Order forms are due on Friday, August 18th.
School Improvements and School Safety
Over the summer, we conducted a parish and school safety assessment with an outside consultant. I am happy to report that the initial feedback for the school was positive. We are awaiting the final report and will use those findings to further plan for improvements to school security.
Our next security project is to reduce visibility from the Meijer Drive to our recess area. The Tuesday Night Guys, a group of parish volunteers who help with maintenance projects, will be installing vinyl strips into our chain link fence. These strips are commonly used to provide privacy and block view from the outside. These should be in place by the end of August.
Lastly, one of our biggest safety vulnerabilities is not one you might expect - it is afternoon car rider time. We have several parents who are not following procedures and creating unsafe situations. We could use help with directing traffic before the students dismiss. We have a need for parents who would be willing to serve on a safety patrol team at daily dismissal from 3 PM to 3:20 PM. If you are available to serve our families in this way, please contact me asap. We will train the team - and even get you fancy vests to wear!
ILEARN 2023 Results
ILEARN scores have been emailed to parents. Overall, Saint Susanna continues to perform well. We scored in the top 13 percent or better compared to other schools in the state of Indiana in math, English language arts, and social studies. Congratulations to all of the teachers and students who give their best every day!
Staffing Updates Fall 2023
We are happy to welcome Mrs. Karen Costanzo to our staff. Mrs. Costanzo will be working with Mrs. Zorman this year. She will cover Mrs. Zorman's maternity leave this fall. Starting the second semester, Mrs. Zorman will teach mornings in PreK and Mrs. Costanzo will teach in the afternoons.
Mrs. Karen Costanzo
Hi! My name is Karen Costanzo and I will be serving as a substitute in Pre-K. I’m originally from Terre Haute and went to St. Pat’s for my elementary and middle school years. After graduating from Terre Haute North, I earned a B.A. in psychology from Indiana University and returned to get my masters in elementary education. My husband, 3-year-old son, and I live in Avon with our 2 big dogs. I have taught preschool and elementary school-age children for nearly 10 years. While I love teaching children of all ages, preschool is my favorite setting. I am so excited to join the St. Susanna family!
Saint Susanna Catholic Church Backyard Bash 2023
Volunteers Needed - an event like this takes many helping hands to be successful. At Saint Susanna School we ask that each family complete 5 service hours. Uniform Information 2023
New uniform polos for K-8th grade for the 23-24 school year must be purchased from Schoolbelles and carry our monogram. Students can also wear monogrammed Educational Apparel red shirts from previous years. Students may not wear non-monogrammed polos as part of their uniforms.
Our plaid is unchanged. Girls may continue to wear the previous years' skirts or can purchase new ones at Schoolbelles as well. You can order through their website at www.schoolbelles.com with the school code S3012. Below is a flyer that shows items that Schoolbelles has to offer. The only item that must be purchased through their company is the monogrammed polos (highlighted). Other items are optional and are permissible in our dress code.
Middle school students will continue to have specially monogrammed shirts available from Avon Sports Apparel.
Safe Environment Training
All volunteers must have a background check and completed safe environment training through the Archdiocese's Safe Parish system. All volunteers' background checks are monitored quarterly. All volunteers must be registered in the Safe Parish system before they can volunteer. Instructions for registering and training are in the newsletter each week (see below).
In order to volunteer in our school building during the day or attend field trips as a chaperone, you must have current safe environment training on file with us. This requirement includes safe environment training and a basic background check through the Archdiocese.
To obtain a new training and background check:
- Go to the website www.archindysafeparish.org
- Create an account.
- You will need a passcode in order to create an account. The passcode is Archindy2021
- Complete the background check for school or parish VOLUNTEER and select Saint Susanna as a recipient of your information.
- Complete the training video and questions.
Please allow up to two weeks for this process to be completed.
Volunteer Opportunities
The service hour tracking form can be found here and a copy will be sent home in the back-to-school packets. We ask that each family complete five service hours this school year. These hours can be completed during school or parish events.
Easy Fund-Raising for Saint Susanna Catholic School!
Box Tops for Education
Here’s how it works:
- Step 1: Download the new Box Tops App (iTunes or Google Play) – it’s free
- Step 2: Create a username and connect it to your child’s school
- Step 3: Scan your grocery store receipt. Items with the new Box Tops label will be automatically credited to your school
Does this mean I should stop sending in my paper Box Tops that I have already clipped? No! Continue to send those to the school!
