Weekly Cougar News
ConVal High School Happenings - October 21, 2022
Message from Principal McKillop
Good Afternoon, Cougar Nation!
Our population has expanded for the next few weeks, and we are very excited about it! Twenty-one exchange students and two teacher chaperones from the Akademisches Gymnasium in Salzburg, Austria, joined our school community on Monday. I was grateful to meet them in the library and welcome them to our building during TASC on the day of their arrival.
Congratulations to the many student athletes that have participated in their respective senior games this week. I was honored to be invited to play with our Unified Soccer team yesterday for their senior game. For some of our student-athletes a new season is on the horizon. We appreciate all that our seniors have done to represent our school while wearing the ConVal uniform.
This morning, I had the opportunity to visit Ms. Young's Anatomy and Physiology class to experience the 23rd Annual History Art show. I was able to view Anatomy students' creative expressions of their recent studies of the cells and tissues that make up our bodies. I was so impressed by the artwork, creativity, and connections. I would encourage you to read the stories below about some of the exciting things happening in our classrooms, courts, fields, and community.
Good luck to our teams competing tonight, and to our students rehearsing for the performance of And Then There Were None ... by Agatha Christie that will take place in the beginning of November.
Have a wonderful weekend, and GO COUGARS!
Best,
Heather

Students Recognized For AP Performance
A group of ConVal High School students was recently recognized for their performance on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) exams. In all, 112 ConVal students participated in AP tests in May 2022. Several students completed more than one test, for a total of 177 exams administered.
Fifteen students earned distinctions, including the AP Scholar with Honor award and the AP Scholar with Distinction award. AP Scholar awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated exemplary college-level achievement on AP Exams. The AP Scholar with Honor award is given to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. The AP Scholar with Distinction award is given to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Students can cite these awards among their distinctions on college applications and resumes.

ConVal Welcomes Students From Austria
On Monday, Conval High School welcomed 21 exchange students and two teacher chaperones from the Akademisches Gymnasium in Salzburg, Austria.
For the next two weeks, these students will live with local host families and attend daily classes at ConVal. In the photo, Erik Bowman introduced some of the exchange students, who wore their light blue school hoodies, to the students in his Social Studies class.
During their time in the United States, the Austrian students will also have opportunities to go on field trips to see sights in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York.
This year marks the in-person return to the ConVal High School-Akademisches Gymnasium exchange between students from ConVal and students from Salzburg. The program has facilitated successful abroad experiences for more than twenty years.
CLASSROOM SNAPSHOTS!
Ms. Concannon's German II
Students in Ms. Concannon's German II class warm-up by singing and performing the song Das Fliegerlied. As the class begins, the students stand and sing along with the song, strengthening their German communication skills in a fun and engaging way.
Miss Gilpatrick's Geometry
Students in Miss Gilpatrick's geometry class are collaborating on their latest group project. Students are designing a road map using parallel lines cut by transversals and perpendicular lines, then adding in buildings using various angle relationships that are formed by the intersecting lines.
Mr. Saucier's Algebra III
Ms. Young's History Art Show
On Friday, Ms. Young’s Anatomy & Physiology class held ConVal’s 23rd Annual History Art Show. The second unit in Anatomy class is Histology, the study of the cells and tissues that make up the human body. Students use microscopes to observe and diagram 22 different tissues found in mammalian organs and they learn to identify each one by sight. Often they will notice that a certain tissue resembles something familiar such as marshmallows or the rings of a tree stump. History Art offers students a chance to express their observations in a creative way. This year students painted sunsets, rubber soled shoes, cherry blossoms, planets, weasels, and papayas inspired by their favorite tissues.

How can Career and Technical Education (CTE) serve your students?
Did you know that all students in NH in grades 10-12 are eligible to participate in CTE programs ranging from accounting and agriculture to visual & performing arts and welding and everything in between? (Check out what CTE programs are offered in NH!) In fact, CTE also supports students down to grade 5 with career exploration activities and resources!
The CTE center that serves students in the Conant, ConVal, and Mascenic school districts areas is the Region 14 Applied Technology Center (ATC). CTE gives students real-world, hands-on experience in a variety of employment fields and offers opportunities for dual credit courses and Industry-Recognized Credentials that can give students an advantage after graduation.
We have an opportunity to have our CTE center renovated as part of the 2026-2027 biennium in the State budget. We want to make sure that our center best meets the needs of our students and community by preparing them for job opportunities available locally as well as nationally and world-wide. Would you please help by giving your input? Thank you for your help as we work to make the Region 14 Applied Technology Center meet the needs of our students and community.
