Students Portray Critical Thinking Skills
As part of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council for Equitable Education (SACEE), a District 103 committee, we are creating Share Your Voice videos that feature interesting and unique stories about students. If you would like your student to participate in this project, please fill out this Google Interest Form and we will reach out to you with the next steps.
The mission of District 103 is “to provide innovative learning experiences, which empower each student to excel and make a difference in a diverse and interconnected world.” We want our students to be Leaders in Learning and successful citizens in our communities.
To realize this mission, the District Strategic Planning Committee created a Portrait of a Graduate. The Portrait is a collective vision for our students that focuses on key qualities or “competencies” every child should have when they graduate from District 103.
One such competency is critical thinking as described in this brief video by Teacher Tony Hafner. To learn more about D103's Portrait of a Graduate, please visit the portrait website.
Passion Project
Eighth-graders created passion projects that they shared with friends and family during a recent Expo Night.
A passion project for junior high students is an opportunity for them to explore and delve deeply into a topic or area of interest that they are genuinely passionate about. It is a student-driven initiative that allows them to take ownership of their learning and pursue something they truly care about.
Students Brandon Hersh, Chris George, and Murphy Cai developed an energy drink that they believe people will love. The challenge for them, though, was to find a good recipe that made it not only tasty but energetic.
"This project was incredibly rewarding to be a part of. I absolutely loved watching the students engage with each other and their curiosities as they succeeded, failed, pivoted, reflected and ultimately grew confidence as they shared their hard work. The students' energy and smiles at the end of expo night said it all," said Teacher Maggie Patel, who headed the project.
Please visit the Daniel Wright website to read more bout the passion projects. Please visit the school's Google Doc folder for pictures of the projects.
Required Summer Reading
Over the summer, all students entering sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade are required to read specific grade-level novels. Please refer to the Summer Reading Lists to access each grade level's specific summer reading letter and any corresponding assignment(s). Students should bring all summer reading materials to school on their first day.
Wright Way Club
The Wright Way Club members have been busy writing notes to senior citizens at The Wellshire and Riverside Homes to uplift their spirits! Every note is accompanied by a wooden rose.
Chorus Enrollment
Holocaust Speaker
Sixth-grade students were captivated by Debbie Green's mesmerizing account of her mother's harrowing journey aboard the M.S. St. Louis during the dark era of Nazi-occupied Germany. Recently students finished reading the novel Refugee by Alan Gratz. As a result, students made connections to the novel.
June Recognitions
Gay and Lesbian Pride Month: June 11 has been proclaimed as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. In the spirit of honoring equality and freedom, President Bill Clinton said, "I encourage all Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that celebrate our diversity." Daniel Wright's Free to Be Club will participate in the Buffalo Grove Pride Parade on Sunday, June 4.
Juneteenth: Juneteenth honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The name “Juneteenth” is a blend of two words: “June” and “nineteenth.”
