Math
Exact Path Gives Each Student an Individual Road To Success in Math
This year, Truman students are getting support at every level of mathematics. Exact Path is a web-based program that focuses on the individual needs of each learner who uses it. Through an initial diagnostic exam that evaluates student abilities in a variety of math categories, each child is given a “learning path” - a self-paced series of lessons specifically tailored to that student’s needs. Exact Path offers a chance for students to take a second look at topics that were particularly challenging to learn in previous years. Using the results of the Exact Path diagnostic test, along with regular formative classroom assessments, math teachers can also use the program to assign lessons they feel would benefit all of their students. While many teachers are setting aside time each week for classes to explore their learning paths, students also have the option of working on their Exact Path at home, too.
Many of our students have already completed the first diagnostic exam, but there are two others scheduled for later this year. We encourage all students to give these tests their best effort. Not only does it allow them to demonstrate their strengths, but it gives their teachers a basis to tailor parts of lessons to the most important areas of need.
Science
Chemistry students are completing a unit on science practices. They have been learning how to conduct scientific investigations and use laboratory equipment. Students have completed investigations dealing with density, Bunsen burners, separation techniques and hydrated crystals. (Attached is a photo of Mr. Diaz’s Honors chemistry class conducting the first investigation of the year determining densities of various metals.)
Microbiology students were examining the kinetics of the enzyme catalase as it relates to the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide in cells. (Attached is a photo of Mr. Koder’s microbiology enzyme lab)
Biology students are learning about the characteristics of life and cell structure and function. Students examined their cheek cells under the microscope and labeled the cell structures that they observed.
Earth and Space Science students have discussed the electromagnetic spectrum, the Big Bang, star formation and the lifecycle of stars.
Environmental Science students have been focusing on how to use dichotomous keys to identify organisms. They also began learning about how to use the sample plot method to estimate the population size of species that don't move, like trees.
Social Studies
9th grade students in Western Civilizations started the year by learning the physical and political geography of the continent of Europe followed by an examination of the Italian and Northern Renaissance periods. Students in Mrs. Welsh's class have worked on building classroom community and debating skills by answering "Hot Topic '' questions weekly.
10th grade students completed a review of U.S. geography concepts and explored the history of the United States during the Roaring 20s up to the Great Depression.
11th grade Civics students investigated the question, “What makes a good citizen?” and received pocket-sized copies of the U.S. Constitution provided by Hillside College.
