The Buzz
Summer Term - 8th June 2023
Message from the Executive Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
The children have returned, enthusiastic for an exciting final half term. The school and curriculum is always busy during this final part of the academic year with visits, sports events, transition activities to name but a few. Please ensure you check Parenthub as reminders and all communication is now sent via this platform and I know some parents and children have missed out on some recently held events.
As you may be aware, the Mayor of London has proposed to provide free school lunches for all KS2 pupils for the coming academic year. This proposal has not been fully confirmed for schools yet but we are looking at the impact and the possible uptake of these free meals. All pupils currently in year 2 to year 5 will receive an eform to indicate your preference (link below). Please complete this to help us plan for our lunchtime next year.
I know the school is looking forward to the Sports for Champions visit next week which will be very exciting, please support this with a donation if at all possible.
Finally, a reminder about school uniform which still remains a focus for the school even in June. Children still need black school shoes to wear everyday. Trainers are not suitable unless it's a sports activity. School jumpers and cardigans should be worn if the children are cold and children should not be wearing necklaces, bracelets, rings or hoop earrings.
Ms Helen Lockey

Messages from the Office
Jewellery
We have recently updated our uniform policy to outline guidelines for earrings during PE lessons. Earrings need to be removed before PE lessons to ensure the safety of all pupils. In the event that earrings cannot be removed, tape will be applied to provide protection.
I would encourage parents to teach their children how to take their earrings out (if they come out) and how to put them back in.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.
Class Photos
Reminder that the deadline for ordering class photos is Sunday 11th June. Please ensure that you place your orders before this date. Any orders placed after this date will incur postage and packaging costs.
Free School Meals
During the pandemic, children that were entitled to free school meals would receive a supermarket voucher to use during the school holidays to help families with the cost of lunches while children were at home. We are fortunate that the Richmond Borough is still currently providing supermarket vouchers during the school holidays for families that are entitled to free school meals this academic year.
In July 2023 we will be issuing vouchers from Achieving for Children which will be £20 per week (£120) for families that are entitled to free school meals to help with the cost of lunches during the summer holidays.
Even if your child does not have school meals at school, you can still apply.
Scholastic Book Fair - Next Week
Our final Book Fair, for this academic year, will take place on Monday 12th June, Wednesday 14th June and Thursday 15th June. Please bring your pennies and come along to buy some books. All books sold will bring a contribution to the school to purchase new books so please do come along and support the school.
Thank You
Big thank you to Wendy Glynn for again making up the hanging baskets outside the school office. They look beautiful and we look forward to watching them grow in the coming weeks.
Borough Sports
What a day of sport! It was brilliant to be part of the first borough sports event since 2019 with all the children representing HJS impeccably. We were so pleased to see the children perform at their best in their respective events whilst competing against the top schools in the borough. Everyone enjoyed themselves on what was a fantastic occasion.
A big thank you to Mr Graves and Ms Fraser for taking the children yesterday and for all their organising.
Sports for Champions
I am pleased to let you know that on Wednesday 14th June we have an international athlete coming to HJS to deliver an inspirational assembly followed by a sponsored fitness circuit. This will involve an assembly where the athlete will talk through their journey throughout their career and share the setbacks they were faced with. There will also be an opportunity for the students to ask any questions.
Sports for Champions are a community interest company who encourage everyone to take part in exercise, regardless of their athletic ability. On that note, we are asking for a small donation to sponsor the children during their fitness circuit that they will be completing on the morning of the assembly. Please note, any donations, no matter how small, is very much appreciated.
If your child raises £35 they will have the brilliant opportunity to have a photo with the athlete on the day. This is the last chance to raise money - so far we have raised £280.
Year 6 News
