Principal's Message
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break and I am looking forward to seeing everyone when school resumes on Monday, November 28th.
A big thank you to our Pershing Foundation for sponsoring the turkeys for this year's Turkey Trot and a big congratulations to our winners:
- 6th Grade – Howie Truong and Isaac Shiraishi
- 7th Grade – Bryce Rowland and Claire Belflower
- 8th Grade – Ella Paik and Lila Mercer
All students who ran the mile the week of Nov 14th had their names entered into an opportunity drawing to win the turkeys. Thank you to our PE teachers Coach Cott, Coach Carroll, and Coach Green for organizng this event!
And as we prepare for the final stretch of this first semester I wanted to remind familes about the importance of students being in school everyday. Although I recognize we are dealing with the lingering effects of COVID-related illnesses and a heightened flu season I still think it is important to remind families that there is a direct connection between academic performance and student attendance. Students fall behind when they miss school, whether they are absent for excused or unexcused reasons. You can have a big impact on your child's attendance going forward and we encourage you to help get your child to school on-time every day. Let's finish the final six weeks of this semester strong and it starts with being present at school every day!
Congratulations Pershing Robotics!
The Fall Season Qualifying Tournament for Robotics held November 12th resulted in advancement to Regionals for ALL THREE Pershing Robotic Panthers teams: The Panther Bytes, Solar Satellites, and Teknodogs. Additionally, Teknodogs won 1st place tournament-wide for their "Innovation Project Presentation", a 5-minute presentation delivered before a panel of judges discussing a proposed solution to a current energy problem-- In the case of the Teknodogs, a proposed bicycle dynamo capable of charging a cellphone called "The Pedaltron 3000." Regional events will be held the weekend of December 3/4.

P2 GRADES WILL BE AVAILABLE ON FRIDAY, DEC 2ND
Grades will be visible in PowerSchool for families by Friday, December 2nd. The second grading period is a progress report and is meant to serve as a temperature check on how students are doing. If you have any concerns about your child's grades we encourage you to reach out to the teacher directly. There is still time for students to improve their grades before final grades are posted in January for the first semester.
HOLIDAY CARD DONATIONS NEEDED
In anticipation of our Cards for Troops Holiday Drive we are asking families to donate any extra holiday cards to Ms. Robe and the ASB. We are in search of cards saying "Happy Holidays." If you or your child would like to donate holiday cards they can be dropped off in the main office or your student can deliver them to Ms. Robe in Rm. 305.
COVID TEST KITS
At-home COVID test kits were distributed to students through their sixth period classes before the Thanksgiving Break. Although not required, it is recommended, that students take a test before returning to school. The recommended test dates are 11/25 & 11/28.
CLEARING ATTENDANCE
We are requesting that if you have to pull your child out of school early for a medical or dental appointment that you provide written documentation (such as a doctor's note) in order to clear the absence upon the student's return. Without the written documentation the absence will remain unexcused.
PHOTO ID REQUIRED FOR STUDENT PICK UP
A friendly reminder that students can only be released to people listed on the emergency contact list in PowerSchool and the person must have photo ID to verify their identity when picking up students. Student safety is a top priority and we take that responsibility seriously at Pershing. Thank you in advance for your support.
BEING GOOD NEIGHBORS - SAN CARLOS PARK
If your child goes to San Carlos Park after school please be aware the school received an email from the San Carlos Park Rec Center Director indicating that there have been some issues in the park with students that they believe attend Pershing Middle School. The director indicated there has been significant littering despite a trash can being moved closer to the area the students hang out and that there has been some vandalism. If your child goes to San Carlos Park after school please remind them to be good neighbors, pick up after themselves, and to be good representatives of our school.
PRACTICING PANTHER PRIDE - BEING RESPONSIBLE AND TAKING CARE OF CHROMEBOOKS
We wanted to make sure families are aware that while the vast majority of our students handle their district-issued chromebooks with care we have had instances where some students have not be responsible with their district issued device. The biggest issue seems to be when students forget that their chromebooks are in their backpacks and they throw the backpack onto the ground to go play. We want families to know that while we understand that accidents sometimes do happen, students have an obiligation to take care of their district issued devices and if we are having to issue multiple devices to the same student in a given school year because they are breaking or damaging their device, families can and will be charged for those devices under district procedure AR3260.2. We are asking families to remind their children that these devices are expensive and they need to be handled with care.
