Hump Day Happenings
Issue 6 ~ 9/20 thru 10/3
Attendance Reminder
As we settle into the school year and our new, slightly earlier start time, please keep in mind:
- School hours are 9:10-3:40. Breakfast eaters should arrive at 8:50 to allow ample time to eat and get to class. All students are sent to class at 9:05am.
- Tardy students need to be signed in by an adult. Please escort your student inside the school and sign in on the binder in the lobby. This is the only way we can ensure PowerSchool attendance is updated and credit is given for attendance that day.
- Early dismissals should also be signed out on the binder in the lobby.
- Doctor notes should be provided to the main office for any medical appointment or for illnesses lasting 4 or more days.
- Feel free to reach out to the School Social Worker, Sarah Hellmann, at hellmsa@cpsboe.k12.oh.us with any questions.
CMC Programs-on-Wheels Visits Kilgour!
Our Kilgour students had some special visitors this week thanks to our PTA. The Cincinnati Museum Center was on campus on Tuesday, 9/26 and Wednesday, 9/27 holding grade level sessions with our students.
The kindergartners enjoyed the Snugs as a Bug program. In this program they were able to see through the eyes of a fly and learn the life cycle of a caterpillar. They were able to meet and touch live insects and marvel at incredible mounted bugs from around the world.
Our 1st graders learned about Incredible Insects in their exploration station program. They were able to get up close and personal with the creatures that make up Earth’s largest group of animals. They also learned the characteristics of insects, saw the world through the eyes of a fly and learned amazing facts about insect defense, including camouflage and mimicry.
The 2nd graders participated in the Forces of Nature program. In this program they investigated weather patterns and natural phenomena through activities that shook, shocked, and erupted! They reviewed the steps of the water cycle, learned about tectonic plates, and modeled the power of earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes, and lightning. Using teamwork they attempted to build a house that was unshakeable!
Our 3rd graders became engineers in the Engineer It program. In teams, they explored engineering using step-by-step instructions and colorful construction kits. They solved problems by building working belt-driven machines. Utilizing the engineering design process, they improved their inventions by conquering friction and making tension work for them.
The 4th graders put their social studies skills to work in the Archaeology of Ohio's Native American Peoples program. They gained an introduction to the major cultural groups of the Ohio Valley’s prehistory, and discovered the tools, natural resources and skills that allowed them to survive. Using a timeline, they viewed these local cultures within the context of civilizations around the world. They also learned about two techniques that archaeologists use to gather information and make inferences about people of the past.
Our 5th graders were Experimenting with Physical Science in their program. They answered questions like what shapes do bubbles take? Does sound vibrate? They then explored bubbles, sound, electricity, magnets, motion, light, color, mirrors and optical illusions in their inquiry-based program. They created hypotheses, performed experiments, drew conclusions and shared their discoveries.
The 6th graders explored a faraway culture in their program, Uncovering Egypt. Our Egyptologists explored archaeology, the science that unlocks the secrets of past civilizations. They excavated and analyzed artifacts from a replica burial site to deduce their owner’s identity and expanded their knowledge of Egyptian culture. They were able to immerse themselves in the world of hieroglyphs, pharaohs and gods and goddesses galore!
There was LOTS of learning and exploring with our friends from the CMC. Programs like these would not be possible without the partnership between our Ah-Mazing PTA, parent volunteers and Kilgour planning staff. Thank you for everything you do to make sure our students have enriching and meaningful experiences at school!
5th Grade Canoe Building with the Urban Wilderness Program
A Kilgour tradition continues... the 5th graders have started building your next canoe. Yes! I said your next canoe. Their creation will ultimately be auctioned off with proceeds going back to the school. Although this canoe may not be ready, the one in the main hallway is and will be available to bid on at the Silent Auction on November 3rd. More details about the Silent Auction later in this newsletter. Keep reading!
A huge THANK YOU to Mrs. Culbertson for keeping the canoe building tradition alive at Kilgour.

Aaaachooo! Cough, Cough... Big Sneeze!
Wait, you mean I don't have to schedule with my child's pediatrician (appointments can sometimes take awhile to secure), take time off work, or hold back my tears as my little battles the nurse??? That's exactly what I mean. As Nurse Bobbi shared in her introduction a few issues back, she can administer some vaccinations to our students. This happens to include the yearly flu shot. It can be administered during the school day without anyone having to make an appointment or miss work. Nurse Bobbi will even check on the kiddos during the day to make sure their OK. This includes a loving hug for those that may need it.
If you're interested in this service, please click here and provide some information about your student. We will make sure to get the necessary consent forms to you and Nurse Bobbi will take care of the rest.
Chuy's Cubing Club Meeting Reminder
Chuy's Cubing Club will be hosting an informational meeting this Friday, 9/29 after school from 4p-4:30p in the library. It will be an opportunity to learn more about cubing and the goals of the club. Everyone is welcome to join whether you've completed the interest form or not. We're looking forward to starting a new amazing club and we hope you'll join us.
Friday, november 3rd 7-11pm at otr stillhouse
WHY: Kilgour receives a smaller portion of funding relative to other CPS schools so our community and families need to fill the gap. The funds raised by the PTA are used for academic enrichment, classroom supplies, field trip buses, professional development for teachers, and much more. The silent auction is Kilgour PTA's biggest annual fundraiser and we've found that donations by families of Kilgour raise the most money at silent auction!
SPECIFIC HELP NEEDED: Think about whether you or someone you know in your network can donate items for the auction. For example:
- Own a small business? We can advertise for you as part of your donation!
- Do you have season tickets to sports, arts, or other events that you are willing to donate?
- Know someone who works for sports teams or a restaurant or provides a service? Ask them to donate! If you aren't comfortable asking people you know for a donation, let us know and we can contact them on your behalf!
Thank you in advance for helping us offer new and exciting auction items this year!
Please email silentauction@kilgourpta.org with donations!
