September Letter from the Principal
Dear Corbett Families and Students,
We have had a great start to the 23-24 school year. After the first week of getting back into the swing of school, the second week has students and teachers fully engaged in the business of learning. Freshman physics students are investigating the relationship between distance and time, sophomore world history students are modeling world-wide trade routes, junior yearbook students are evaluating other yearbooks, and seniors in statistics tested the claim that Parkinson’s can be detected by smell.
I am very proud of the work that fall coaches are putting in to create a positive school culture on campus. As a long time educator and coach, I have always understood the strong connection between athletics and school, but it is affirming to see it in action when coaches lean into the “student” of student-athlete. In addition, Corbett students continue to be outstanding super fans at our home events. They are doing a great job of demonstrating sportsmanship in rooting only FOR their team, and avoiding negative cheering against the opponent.
The September Principal Chat will be on Zoom, from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 20th. The topic will be a repeat of the Senior Family Meeting in August that covered information that seniors should know about the key events in this school year. Be on the lookout for a Zoom link invitation in your email.

Sick? Stay home.
Soccer (Girls)
Corbett played a tough match versus Astoria this past Thursday, as they played a formation that was very difficult to beat. The team was resilient, adjusting formations as we went to try and break through their defense. Ellie Mason scored the first goal for Corbett with a free kick from the top of the 18 yard box. However, Astoria scored three before the end of the half. The second half was much stronger for Corbett, as they dominated possession, and scored the only goal of the half when Kora Payne got to the ball first after Ellie Mason sent in a corner kick. According to Coach McIntire, "It wasn't enough as Corbett lost 3-2, but the team learned a lot from the game."

Soccer (Boys)
Boys soccer tied St. Helens High School 4-4 on Friday night, with St. Helens scoring the tying goal with only 26 seconds remaining. "Seth and I both agree that we have never seen this team play as well and as hard as they did. This was a physical, hard fought match that saw us down 2-0, 2-1, 3-1 and then the shots we had been pummeling the goal with started to go in," described Coach Paul. Jason Minsker scored all 4 of goals, with Rowan Wilburn assisting on one of them and Jason Moskalyuk assisting on another. Coach Paul concluded, "Our core is really starting to jell and the connections on the field prove that. At first I wanted to name a few names to recognize their amazing play but the truth is that just about every player that got in the game had great impact and played with heart and skill. This is so fun to watch as it develops!!!"
The team also played The Dalles at home on Tuesday, losing 1-5 to the 4A Riverhawks.
- Next home game: Monday, 9/18 @ 6 pm

Football
The football team lost a tough game at Gervais on Friday, 8-52. "It was a tough game but I think we are slowly learning the value of team work and trust," reflected Coach Cease after the game. Captain Zane Davis added, "That team was definitely beatable, but lots of our players were not ready to compete. We will bounce back from this." The football program is in rebuilding mode this year, and the coach is optimistic there will be lots of growth over the season.

Cross Country
Corbett's XC team did not compete this week, but Olivia McGrew passed the Corbett Baton to Anna Rondema. The baton is passed from athlete to athlete on the cross country team each week, and is a way of recognizing athletes who exemplify their values of Passion, Perseverance and Purpose. Olivia mentioned Anna's team spirit, her willingness to fully engage in practice and the fact that she set a PR at Ultimook. Well done, Anna.
