FALL 2023
From the MAAP President...
Welcome back to another exciting year full of potential in the world of Alternative Education. In connecting with some of you, the consensus is this summer just flew by, and many of us are finding things are still going strong as we start the 2023-24 school year. In times like these, I see the benefit of our MAAP organization. As members of one of the nation's premier alternative education organizations, please do not hesitate to reach out to your fellow members for advice, encouragement, and validation. We are a strong group of educators as diverse as the students we serve, and one of our biggest strengths is the combined experience and compassion we have for each other. Please do not hesitate to tap into this when needed.
There are a lot of new opportunities out there for Alternative programs this year. Thanks to a lot of hard work last year by many of our MAAP STARS students and advisors, we have a significant grant to support schools participating in MAAP STARS programs. There is also a new grant promoting service-learning programs in schools. The specifics for both of these grants are being worked out, and more details will be sent out as soon as we have them.
I want to give a personal shout-out to De Musselman. A man who, for years, has impacted many lives in the MAAP community was recognized by his hometown of Faribault with a Lifetime Achievement Award. It is a well-deserved honor for such a humble man who has touched many lives.
MAAP has several significant events this fall, and I encourage you to take advantage of them. MAAP 101 for new educators to the alternative education world is an excellent networking opportunity. MAAP STARS Fall Leadership Conference is a wonderful overnight opportunity for your MAAP STARS student leaders to learn and develop your local programs.
Finally, welcome back; the positive impact on so many young lives searching for inspiration and education would not be possible without you. Thank you for that.
See You In Mankato February 7-9th!!
MAAP 101 - Save the Date!
Remember, MAAP will be hosting its annual MAAP 101 Conference at Terra Nova, formerly known as Jane Goodall Environmental Sciences Academy, on Friday October 27, 2023. MAAP 101 is a one day conference (8:30am-3:15pm) designed to support those who are new or relatively new to alternative education. The goal is to provide tools for their toolbox as well as providing training on what working in an alternative setting is all about. If you have new staff in your program, we highly encourage them to attend. However, MAAP 101 is not exclusively for new teachers! We know that veteran teachers can always use an opportunity to sharpen their horns and remind themselves why they got into innovative, alternative education. MAAP 101 is also not just for teachers! It takes an entire team to effectively operate a school and provide amazing opportunities and outcomes for all Minnesota students. There will be something for everyone at MAAP 101 including administrators, counselors, Special Education staff, support staff, etc. Breakout sessions in relicensure areas will be offered!
We have an incredible slate of presenters lined up this year. We will emphasize four main themes at this year’s conference: School Climate, Innovative Instruction, Curriculum Resources, and It Takes a Village. You could jump into sessions that cross themes or focus on one theme throughout the day. The cost of this year’s conference is $75. This includes lunch and up to five CEU hours. Register here. More details are available at https://www.maapmn.org/101 Reach out to gregz@terranovamn.org with any questions.
