Students should remember to check their email throughout the day, each day and check for announcements in Google Classroom. I post the elective schedule to Google Classroom every Sunday afternoon as well as any other information then will need to know for the week ahead. Students have also been encouraged to keep track of grades and assignments. I don't want anyone to get so far behind that they feel overwhelmed or as if they are in a hopeless situation. Communicate with teachers. HELP US HELP YOU!

Band 6: 6th grade band students are working hard on developing characteristic sounds on their instruments. We have been working through warm-up exercises and building the physical skills necessary to play and instrument success. Over the next few weeks, we will begin working on concert music. Last week, we discussed two pieces of music that we will start working through. Please encourage your child to practice daily and give positive feedback when you hear they are really working hard.

Band 7: 7th grade band students were assigned a piece entitled Celtic Air and Dance No. 2 last week. We discussed elements of the piece and they were instructed to work on the second half of the piece, measures 36 to the end. This section is very rhythmic and a bit challenging, which is why I wanted us to start here. I will be checking the practice analysis regularly to see who is practicing. Just a few minutes a day is all I am asking for.

Music Appreciation 6: Last week, we began learning the musical alphabet. The students learned how to identify the notes on the treble and bass staves. I am very impressed with how quickly this group is progressing through this unit. Over the next few days, we will be reviewing using a number of tech resources, a few of which are available in Google classroom. This will help the students prepare for our note identification speed tests coming next week.

Music Appreciation 7: We have begun our musical journey through time with the music of the baroque era. We have talked about events that occured during this time (1600-1750), major musical accomplishments, and key points about the baroque era overall. We will continue on this topic for a few more days before transitioning to our next period of music, the classical era

Music Appreciation 8: Last week, we began discussing the music and culture of Native America. The students took notes and many completed an Edpuzzle assignment that went along with that topic. Tomorrow, we will review and take a short quiz on Native American Music and Culture. Over the next few weeks, we will explore the music and culture of other regions of the world including Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.

8th Grade: We are studying Shakespeare in Drama class for the next few weeks. We are working with the ELA/AIG team to ensure that students understand the language and plays of Shakespeare. The play students are studying in ELA is Midsummer Night’s Dream, which we will also be working through in Drama classes. What does that mean? Well, we will be virtually touring the Globe theatre, learning what words and phrases mean, and having some fun with Shakespearean insults as well as watching the play in class. I LOVE SHAKESPEARE, and I hope my students get some of that enthusiasm from me in this unit!

7th Grade: We are beginning some work on emotions and how they are used in the theatre. We will be studying facial expressions, music, lighting and sound effects as we work through our own emotions. This unit will include viewing a movie starring Jim Varney as we study his effective use of facial expressions in film.

6th Grade: This week we will be beginning our study of stereotypes. Work in this topic includes creating characters, super heroes and stories that battle stereotypes. One project in this lesson will be a cartoon version of a stereotype fighting super hero! I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

MR. DOWNUM - GRADE 8 SOCIAL STUDIES

Welcome back, I hope everyone enjoyed the winter weather. For the next week the workload in Social Studies will be very light as I want the students to focus on the check-ins. Eighth grade is a little different than the other grades because the students have an extra check-in (science). The week of Feb.8th we will be taking a quiz on The Early Republic and then starting on the next unit: The Civil War/ Reconstruction. Please make sure the students are checking their grades in Powerschool and making up any back work that they owe.

MS. NEUJAHR - SCIENCE

We are continuing our effort to focus on all human body systems and the functions of each system towards everyday life. Students should try to stay on top of Ed Puzzles as well as NewsELA articles. As always, students are working on their 3rd Nine Weeks Powerpoint for their end of quarter grade. This week is NC Testing for ELA and Math so make sure your students are keeping up to date on the assignments.

MR. COBB - MATH

The next 2 weeks we will be focusing on Expressions. With all of this bad weather and the pauses in class time due to diagnostic and checkin testing it is important that students are completing all of their EdPuzzles and IXL assignments. We will continue to practice practice practice simplifying and evaluating expressions before the unit 4 test next week.

MS. BAECHLE - ELA:

For the weeks of 2/1-2/12. Students will be taking the second NC Check-in this week. Students will be taking Math on Tuesday 2/2 and ELA on Thursday 2/4. Friday 2/5 will be utilized as a make-up day. Upon completing the NC Check-in students will refer to their core and elective teachers Google Classroom for Asynchronous work with no Google Meets. In addition, the following week we will finalize reading our second text “Lyddie,” with a central focus on writing structure, utilizing direct quotes and analyzing (explaining) for significance within the text, and proper citation and utilizing sources. These skills will be utilized primarily with the completion of either an in class compare and contrast, or argumentative essay.

Parents/guardians, please make sure to have your students check Power school regularly to see what work they are missing. It is critical that ALL students take accountability for their work, come to class regularly, and turn in work on a consistent basis.

In addition, I hold office hours weekly on Wednesdays from 9:00-10:00am, for any additional support with work. In the near future I will be having students attend office hours weekly for additional support with class material. The code for Google meets is: fmsoffice7. The expectation is that students are working on theri I-Ready Pathways for at least 40 minutes weekly for both ELA and Math, which is roughly 2-3 assignments each.
