We had a wonderful evening and day out at Muru Raupatu for our Marae Whānau Puanga Whakangahau (Māori New Year Celebration). Many hands make light work - this community event was well supported with a lot of mahi (work) from teachers, parents and extended whānau. A huge thanks to the Trinder whānau: Rangi, Anna and Kenny, for making this such a success and Kim Cribb for her superb organising skills. We are truly appreciative also to our kaumatua Ihaka Noble, Ray, Edith and our Kapa haka tutor Matapaepae Urwin for their tautoko (support) and matauranga (knowledge) that they passed on to us during this time. Our fourth and final Inter-school Sports exchange is next Monday 1st July where we will be hosting Waitara East School. All teams are still in the hunt for the semifinals!

It has been extremely busy at the school gate before and

after school. The roadworks on Tukapa Street means it is now

even more congested.

We encourage children to use one of our two walking school

buses after school which will reduce the number of cars at

the school gate. One walking bus goes up the Tukapa Street

hill to the cemetery, and the other goes up the bush track to

Frankley Road.

On the last Friday of the term we will be celebrating Frankley’s talent. Our school whakangahau will be hosted by Tūhono and will showcase some of the fantastic acts we have seen over the last 2 weeks. See you all there. The children will be notified next Wednesday if they are performing.

The safety of our children is paramount. I do ask that our car park is not used for dropping off in the mornings and picking up in the afternoons. The driveway gate is closed to ensure the safety of everyone entering and departing the school grounds. The parking is for our staff, volunteers and contractors during school hours. You are more than welcome to use the car park to pick up or drop your children off during the school day for appointments. Please do not park on the grass. Thank you for supporting us to look after our environment and our children. The bush track is also a great option in the mornings and afternoons.

This week’s kupu is ‘ae’ which means yes and ‘kaore’ which means ‘no’. Have a practise when being asked a question at school or at home.

Next week’s kupu is ‘kei hea?’ which means ‘where?’ This too is a helpful phrase to use in the classroom or at home when you are asking where something is that has gone missing or the location of someone.

Give them a go, see how many times you or your tamariki can use them - Kia kaha te Reo Māori - keep our Māori language alive!

Donna has worked with our children over the last six years. Her dedication and enthusiasm for providing purposeful learning opportunities is admirable and inspiring. Donna has decided to use her skills in her family business therefore will be finishing off with us next Friday. We wish her well, however, know we will see her smiles around the school grounds as a parent.

We welcome Mel Smithson into Kahikatea as a learning assistant for terms 3 and 4.

I couldn’t believe it! The Frankley Blue Sticks played hockey versing Bell Block School. We started first. I passed the ball to Elsie. She zoomed down the field and the ball stayed close to her stick. Next I got the ball. I was right by the goal box. I dribbled the ball a short distance and then I scored.

Then Bell Block started. They hit the ball far away. Then Livvie got the ball….and she hit the ball. It was fast as! Then she passed it to Nael. He scored! After that it was half time. We went up to Andre. He chatted to us to work on our passing. Then we went back on the field. We swapped around goals and we won our game!!!! I felt excited about the excellent 10-1 score.

Next week Year 6 students will be receiving the Highlands prospectus and the Parent Teacher evening will be held on Thursday 8 August at 6.30 pm in the Highlands Hall.

Please bring a reusable bag to pick up your pie orders next week. Large orders will be boxed up. We will send out an app message to remind families next week

N.Z. ROLLER SPORTS ARTISTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS, TSB STADIUM 16-20 July 2019. Come and watch skaters from all over NZ compete in Freeskating, Figures, Dance and Precision events. FREE ADMISSION. Opening night is Tuesday 7pm.
