Newsletter Week 39 Term 4
Waiheke High School 8th December 2022
Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou katoa,
We have made it to the end of what has been an extremely challenging year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing students, supportive whānau and extremely hard working staff. I for one have felt extremely welcome in my first year at Waiheke High School.
2022 sees the retirement of Tony Sears, Russell Duurloo and Tom Mulvey. While Te Ao Marama Hau and Johnny Keevil are taking up opportunities elsewhere. I would like to thank these five amazing staff for their contributions to Waiheke High School.
Rebecca Cunningham-Rose (Deputy Principal), Paul Knighton (Deputy Principal) and Emma Musson (Assistant Principal/Specialist Classroom Teacher) will form a new look senior leadership team (SLT). A massive thank you to Demelza Round, David Kennedy, Te Ao Marama Hau, Pita Mahaki and Bill Godbout for their contribution on the extended SLT in the previous two years.
Bring your own device (BYOD) will be extended to the whole school in 2023. If your young person does not currently have a device, please organise one over the summer break. If you need support in purchasing a device, please get in touch with us. We have some support available for those who require it.
The yearbook will be available for collection this Friday 09 December. Thank you to our talented staff member Chanette Büttner who has coordinated the yearbook with the help of Demelza Round and Brent Simpson.
Finally, I hope you all take the opportunity to spend some quality time with whānau and friends. Have a great summer break.
He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata.
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.
Ngā mihi nui,
Mikaere October

The Central Zone Touch Rugby Tournament was the highlight of this term where we were able to field three teams, Girls, Mixed and Boys. Touch Teams - Local Competition
Our two school teams that play every Thursday night in the Local Touch competition are doing extremely well, both near the top of the table, with the WHS Koura team unbeaten so far and the WHS Kuku team only one loss. Keep in going teams - only 2 more game's to go!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff and the community for your amazing help with our sports program in the school this year, whether it was managing, coaching, dropping kids off or picking up. Any help with our kids in sports is awesome. Without you all it would not happen, so thanks!
I am working on the Sports Timetable at the moment for Term 1 2023, so will get this out to everyone before the end of this term. (There maybe a few changes to it in the New Year)
From myself and the Sports Department at Waiheke High School we would like to wish you and your families an awesome, safe, active and healthy Xmas!

Year 9 Rotoroa Island Education Programme
This trip was a practical experience aimed at igniting students' creative side, learning about
Aotearoa’s flora, fauna and predators and giving back to the environment. Year 13 students Cody and Aron Salisbury speaking to the students about their lives growing up on Rotoroa Island was a definite highlight for the students and Rotoroa Island educators. A big thanks to Jared, Tanique, Brent, Avi & Demelza for helping, particularly Avi and Jared with managing the swim. We also had Elisa Unga's sister Racheal along as an adult helper, a past student who has just finished her first year of Nursing.Year 9 Burger Competition Friday 11th November 2022

Rotary National Science & Technology Forum
Congratulations to Ambrose Burke-Munns and Genevieve Blackburn who have both been selected to attend the Rotary National Science & Technology Forum in 2023.
Each January 160 of New Zealand’s top science students spend two weeks of their holidays at a residential Forum at the University of Auckland, prior to starting their last year at High School. Students apply through their schools to their local Rotary Clubs and are put forward for selection, based on their grades and all-round ability. The University of Auckland, AUT and Massey University combine resources to present diverse and stimulating academic sessions & experiences across a wide range of sciences & technologies. The programme includes visits to science & technology enterprises in the Auckland region as well as a range of fun activities. The central purpose of the Forum is to broaden the student’s horizons and assist them in making decisions about their future studies and career options. Two of these students are then selected to represent NZ at an International Science Forum in London the following year.
A big thank you to Waiheke Rotary for enabling our Waiheke High School students to take up this amazing opportunity.
