The month of May is historically a very happening time for schools in Lombard. This year at Hammerschmidt is no exception! Although there are many fun and memorable events planned for our final weeks of school, we also have a lot yet to learn in our time remaining. Please review and note the relevant dates that impact your family!

Walk+Roll to school is BACK Monday, May 8th - Friday, May 19th!

The goal is for students and families to increase their physical activity on their way to and from school, and track their progress.

Students will receive a tracking form, which is also attached to this email, to record how they traveled to and from school each day.

In addition to improving their health, students who bike or scoot to and from school at least 5 days will receive a $10 gift card from J & R Cycle in Lombard. Students who walk at least 5 days will be entered into a raffle to win a prize.

The Lombard Police will also be on the playground during recess one day for a Bicycle Safety Chat. You can find safety tips in the information attached as well.

We have our last two Star Constellations Lessons planned for the 2016-17 School Year!

At the end of the day on Tuesday, May 9th, students will meet in their Star Constellations groups to paint the fence posts that have planned in our previous meeting. Students will work to make their artistic visions come alive!

Special thanks goes out to our WHS PTA GARDEN CLUB for helping us to prime the fence posts. Special thanks also goes out to all their parents for helping to get the white paint out of clothes and off their bodies!

On Thursday, May 25th, we have a culminating event planned that will will help students identify characteristics of "Leaders", and also pay a special tribute to the grade 5 student leaders in each group. This will be the last meeting for our 5th grade students and they will pass the torch to our current grade 4 students to become group leaders for the 2017-18 school year! Star Constellation groups will remain largely the same, however, our outgoing grade 5 students in each group will make room for our incoming Kdg. students!

Last Tuesday, May 2nd, WHS welcomed a special guest. Amy Logan, author of 4 children books came to share her message of kindness with our students. We had two assemblies, one for grades 3-5, and one for grades K-2. Amy's message directly related to this year's school theme: Making a Difference! Her books illustrate how small acts of kindness can make big impacts on all of us! Amy challenges students to go to her website, download her kindness calendar, list their acts of kindness, and mail it to her. She has pledged to write students back who send her their completed calendars! Her website can be accessed using the link below.

Our WHS Spring Open House is intended to be a celebration of learning! Student work will be showcased throughout the building and the BOOK FAIR will be open in the LRC! This evening will begin at 6:45 pm. The agenda is as follows:

• 6:45 pm: BRIEF PTA MEETING
• 7:00 pm: Hammerschmidt Highlights presented by Mr. Danielski
• 7:15- 8:15 pm- Classroom visitation

• Friday, May 26th- No School for students on D44 School Improvement Day
• Monday, May 29th- No School - Memorial Day Holiday
