These criteria are important for parents and students to consider before signing up for honors.
Below you will also find the disclaimers about high school honors courses:
1. The honors math curriculum is one in which students can expect to move at a fast pace through new concepts at a deeper level. Such rigor and pacing may result in increased effort/time on a student’s behalf.
2. Students may receive lower grades than they have typically earned.
3. High levels of academic rigor and pacing are expectations of the class. The teacher will be maintaining these levels of rigor and pacing throughout the course.
4. The student is responsible for reviewing or learning prerequisite skills/concepts. The teacher will not be expected to teach material from any prerequisite course or to spend an extraordinary amount of time on individual tutoring and re-teaching.
5. If a student is placed in honors math and is having difficulty keeping up, he or she may NOT be allowed to change their course level until semester two and will only be moved if space is available.
If, after reading this, you don't believe that Honors Geometry is the best placement for your student, please contact your student's counselor to change their enrollment.
Box B - Elective Choices
The 9th grade elective selection list is on the back of the scheduling card. Freshmen students should select their electives from this list.
Graduation Requirement- World Language
- You need two years of the same World Language to graduate*
- Selective colleges prefer to see a minimum of 2 years of a World Language completed in grades 9-12.
*flex option is available if you are unable to meet the 2nd year requirement. See counselor for more information.
Graduation Requirement- Physical Education and Health
1.0 credit of Physical Education and Health is required for graduation.
Option 1: One semester of Physical Education and one semester of Health
Option 2: Flex out – Participating in 2 seasons of a Rochester Community Schools approved MHSAA Sport or Marching Band is equivalent to one semester of a PE class. This leaves you with one semester of Health to take at Stoney Creek.
If you are interested in flexing out, PE flex forms are available in the counseling office.
Please note that there is no swimming in any of the PE classes.
Graduation Requirement- Visual Performing Applied Arts (VPAA)

Commonly Asked Course Planning & Scheduling Questions
Summer Learning Program
If you are planning to take a required course through the Summer Learning Program (SLP) this summer, please just make note of this on your scheduling card near the course it applies to so we are aware of your plans. We don't want to think you made a mistake of not scheduling for a course.
World History, Health, and Physical Education
Credit By Exam
How do I register and sign up for a Credit by Exam?
You will need complete the Credit by Exam application to sit for an exam in the spring. Applications are only available online.
I'm planning to take Credit by Exam, how do I note that on the scheduling card?
If you are planning to take a Credit by Exam this spring, please note this on your scheduling card. Make a note of the class you would like us to replace it with if you do earn credit for the course. (i.e. "planning to test out of Geometry, would like to take Honors Algebra 2 if I pass the exam") If you are trying to acquire credit for a required 9th grade course, you will still want to schedule for the required 9th grade course and we will make the change if needed after the Credit by Exam results are provided.
Marching Band | Jazz Band
How do I enter my Marching Band or Jazz Band selections?
These classes are additional courses outside of the six hour school day. They are not included in the 12 semesters. You will not be able to enter these courses in StudentVue, so please make sure you clearly mark the box if you are planning to take either of these courses so we can be sure to manually add it in for you.
World Language
Should I continue my world language in high school?
Yes, it is strongly recommended for students who are successful in their world language in middle school to continue on in high school. There are some competitive colleges that will strongly recommend students complete four years of the same world language. It is also advised to consult with your teacher, counselor, and your potential college websites to support an informed decision .
Honors Courses | Teacher Recommendations
How do I know if an honors course is right for my student?
Typically, students selecting honors math and honors English are receiving "A" grades on homework, tests, and quizzes in their current courses. It is highly suggested that students consult with their middle school teachers and counselor to determine class placement. Honors classes are self-select, and cannot be dropped at any time.
Why are teacher recommendations part of the scheduling process for honors classes?
We strongly recommend you consider your teachers' recommendations for placement in honors or sequence classes. They use data and experience to make useful and informative recommendations on behalf of student's success. Current middle school teachers will be signing scheduling cards for those students that they believe are appropriate for a class selection. It is a family decision for any selection.
PE Flex
Will my out-of-school sports count for PE credit?
No. Students may only flex their PE requirement with 2 seasons of an MHSAA school sport or Marching Band. There are no exceptions to this. No outside sports or activities we will be approved.
