Girls Hockey Begins Season
The girls hockey team had their first regular season scrimmage against Thief River Falls. They had some girls that were sick that couldn't play, hurting the final results overall. The girls gave it their all and battled but still fell short. The score for JV was 0-7 and the Varsity score was 0-14. Some of the younger, new and upcoming players did amazing! The girls then played Benson and also came up short. The girls are still looking for their first win on the season, but are optimistic that it will happen soon. They are looking forward to this season as they grow together and hopefully get a win!
The girls have their first home game of the season on Friday, December 8th at 6pm @ Bronco Arena. The girls will be back in action the next day, Saturday, December 9th at home vs. Crookston @ 2pm.

Boys Swimming and Diving Kicks off Season
The Bronco Boys Swimming & Diving team has officially kicked their season off. This year they have two captions. The captains are juniors Brendyn Scholler and William Ginter. The Falls High Ink Got together with them and asked them some questions and here is what they had to say.
Brendyn Scholler
Brendyn Scholler swims in four events; he swims the 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and the 200 and 400 relay. His favorite event to swim is the 500 freestyle. His least favorite event to be in is the backstroke and breaststroke. He prefers out of town meets especially at Chisholm and Proctor. His favorite things about out of town meets are the bus rides and eating with the team after the meets.
William Ginter
William's pre-meet meal is Pizza Lunchables. He competes in the 100 free, medley relay, and 400 relay. His favorite is the 100 backstroke. William's coach is Steve Joslyn, which is one of his favorite parts about swimming. His favorite thing about out of town meets is also eating with the team.
One Act Play is Back in Action
Lights, camera, action! The Falls High One Act season is underway. The team got a head start on the season by starting practice last week. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this extra-curricular activity; One Act is a MSHSL sponsored activity where schools across the state perform short plays or "one acts" and compete amongst each other.
This year the FHS One Act team is performing a drama instead of a humorous play, which they have done in the past. This year they will be performing "Boxes" by Kendra Thomas which is a show about all the pressures, expectations, and hopes that are put on teenagers around them.
Due to a big turnout of kids wanting to participate in One Act (around 20 kids!) this year there will be two casts, a cover cast and a competition cast. The way the two casts will work is if someone from the competition cast becomes sick or unable to make it for a rehearsal or performance, the student in the cover cast will have already learned that student’s role and can fill in for that person. The competition cast will participate in the section 7A One Act competition which is usually held at Eveleth High School. There will be two performances at Backus of the show Boxes with the cover and competition cast each performing the play, dates and more information will be available closer to the performances.
The director of the play is Ms. Elsa Swanson, and this will be her second year as the director. Her goals for the season are to “go to sections and put on the best performance we can”. She mentioned that this year she has a really great group and is looking forward to working with the kids.
Evie Conat is a senior at Falls High School and has been participating in One Act since it began in 2021 and has been participating in theater since she was 10 years old. Her character this year is Holly. A little information about the character Holly is that she is very put together, very involved in the school and activities, straight A student, and well emotionally regulated. Evie went on to say that “this is my last season with One Act, I want to show the younger kids who just started, how fun it really is and trying to spark that interest in younger people”. She likes one act because it's fun to pretend to be someone you're not sometimes and it's a really good group of people to be around.
Delayne Hollis is a senior at FHS and plays the role of Chris, the antagonist. Delayne has been involved in theater since she was 8 years old and has participated in one act since 2021. A little bit about her character is that Chris is someone who doesn’t own a box because she threw it away due to the expectations becoming too much and weighing down her box. She then tries to convince others, especially Jack, the main character, to throw away their boxes. Delayne said, “I’m looking forward to the community that’s always built during one act and other theaters. I always like meeting up with old friends and meeting new ones”. Delayne’s goal this year is to place well at sections and hopefully advance to state.
Isabelle Forphal is a senior this year and has been involved in theater since she moved here in 2018. “My goal for this season is to have fun and make new friends”. Izzy is looking forward to meeting the new people, especially the younger kids, and helping them out and making friends along the way.
Emerald Estabrooks is a junior and plays one of the chorus members in the competition cast and plays Chris in the cover cast. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, especially the new kids, and going to state”. She has been in One Act all three years and has been doing theater since 5th grade. She went on and talked about the play, “I think it's a really good drama that represents people’s anxiety, building up pressure, and what people really expect of you and how it can get to be too much”. Emerald is excited for the season and in her words, “it's going to be great!”
The FHS One Act team will perform a show at the Backus Community Center sometime in the middle of January and head of the sections towards the end of January. Falls High Ink will keep you posted and let you know when these home performances are and how the One Act Team does at the Section 7A competition.

Bronco Hockey Kicks Off Season
The Minnesota hockey season has officially started and the boys Bronco Hockey Team are preparing for another memorable season. Coach Chad Baldwin says that he is optimistic about this year's team and there is a good mix of returning players and newcomers. He says that he is excited to keep building off of the time, effort, and successes that the team and program has put into making Bronco Hockey what it is today. Baldwin has been coaching for eight years and he hopes to make the most out of his ninth. He hopes that every player can look back on their years on the team and know that it was one of the best times of their life.
The captains, Noah Shikowsky and Cooper Crandall, are excited for the first home game and the games against Fort Frances and St. Paul Johnson. They both hope to have a winning season and Cooper thinks that the younger and newer talent on the team will be a great help in reaching that goal. Noah says he wants to make the most of last season and to keep a solid mindset before and during the games. He says he will miss playing in Bronco Arena in front of his friends and family.
The Broncos played their first game on November 28th against Lake of the Woods at Bronco Arena, and fell to the Bears 6-1. The game did not go how the Broncos had hoped in starting their season, but they were happy with how the played in the second half of the game. The Broncos traveled to Crookston on December 7th, for their second game of the season. The Broncos had a strong first 2 periods, keeping the game 1-1. Goaltender Kane Thompson had 40 saves in the net, keeping the Broncos in the game. The Broncos eventually fell to the Pirates 4-1, with the Pirates scoring 3 goals in the 3rd period.
The Broncos next game is Tuesday, December 12th, when they will travel to Ely in hopes of gaining their first win of the season.
Girls Basketball Starts Season
On Saturday, November 18th, the varsity basketball girls team kicked off their season when they went to Bemidji for scrimmages. All games were 20 minutes running time except the last game was 18 minutes stop time. The first game they played was against Park Rapids. They were a very tall team, but the Broncos played very well against them. The second game was against Cass Lake. The third game we played was against Grand Rapids. The last scrimmage the girls played was against Bemidji.
The girls opened their season with their first official game being held at Bemidji which is a AAAA school. The girls knew it would be a tough game but that it would help them compete against the rest of the teams on their schedule. The game did not turn out well for the Broncos, but they felt tha they played hard and learned a lot to take away going forward. Their next game was a home game against a strong Chisholm team. The girls lost to the Bluestreaks, but again, felt that improvement was made. The girls travel to take on a strong Ely Timberwolves team on Friday, December 8th at 7:15pm. The girls' next home game will be on Tuesday, December 12th against Hill City/ Northland.
Coach Barras said his favorite part of coaching is the kids. What he looks for in an athlete is that they want to be their best, have a positive attitude, and to look to make others better. When asked what he is the most excited for this year, he responded that it simply is this group of girls. His biggest goal for the team this year is to grow together as a team, and see progress under younger girls, knowing that they will be able to step up. His biggest advice to players is don’t give up even when things don’t seem to be going well. Keep your head up. His expectations for the team is to be competitive, this group of girls are very scrappy and very competitive , and know they don’t like to lose.
Boys Basketball Begins Season
The Bronco Boys Basketball Team took on the Chisholm Blue Streaks on Tuesday December 5th for their first game of the season. They unfortunately lost with a final score of 103-39. Scoring for the Broncos was Carter Line, Landin Budris, Kalan Kittleson, Hendrix Torgerson, Jarred Slifer, and Lucas Hollis. Out at the three point line hitting shots were Kalan Kittleson, Carter Line, and Hendrix Torgerson, in the paint/midrange shots were Landin Budris, Lucas Hollis and Jarred Sliffer. It was a tough first game but they played very well.
The boys were back in action Thursday night, December 7th at home against Ely. The boys lost in a close game with a final score of 62-57. Senior Captain Hendrix Torgerson led the Broncos in scoring with 21 points and Landin Budris and Kalan Kittelson added 18 points a piece.

FHS Woods Classes Finish up Semester Projects
Mr. Olson’s Welding 1 Class:
The welding 1 class is made up mostly of juniors and seniors, so the students already have previous welding welding experience. There are about 17 students in the class. Currently some of them are making a cutting table for cutting steel on, while others are taking welding tests. The test consists of welding two pieces of steel together and see if it bends of breaks. They are looking for new projects to do but are unsure of what their next big project will be yet.
Mr. Olson’s Woods 1 & 2 Class
Between the two classes there are around 22 students in total and they all made a cutting board. They are going to make a table soon but everyone's will be different sizes, shapes, and different woods. The tables will be of all different types and they all will be used for different things. Making the cutting boards helped them learn how to use all the machines in the wood shop safely and efficiently and how to put them together so that they can continue on with bigger projects.
Jr. High Knowledge Bowl has Successful Season
Recently, the Falls JV Knowledge Bowl team finished off their season with their last meet at MIB. They placed seventh in their regional playoffs. Soon many of the JV team members will be joining the Varsity team. We sat down with Doug Salo and Matthew Foley to ask them a few questions about knowledge bowl. First we asked what knowledge bowl is exactly. Matthew explained that they have both practices and meets. At meets, they divide into groups and compete against other teams in a written round first then a vocal round. Then we asked what they cover in knowledge bowl. Doug took this question, responding with “Any subject from pop culture, math, science, geography, government, basically anything you might cover in school could appear in a question.” We then found out that Matthew’s favorite part of Knowledge Bowl is "shot-gunning", which is where you buzz in before the question is fully read. Doug simply said winning was his favorite part. Matthew said his area of expertise was history and geography and both boys said they have a lot of random knowledge. Matthew's favorite memory from this season was “Probably the time when we got basically a huge sequence of questions right and we ended up in the top three for a while.” Doug said his hope for next year was to make top three placement.
