Week In Review and a Look Ahead: Friday, August 18, 2023
Principal's Message
On Monday, August 21, we open up a new school year at East. We will have the most updated hard-copies of schedules ready for our students in their Homerooms. Please access Infinite Campus HERE if you have not done so already. Students need to know their Homeroom teacher's name and room number on the first day of school, but if they forget, we will have staff members around the building with lists to help them out.
Safety and security must be at the forefront of our actions every day. On the first day of school, we will be taking our students out in groups in the middle of the day and walk across the fields to our emergency reunification point. We want to make sure our students know this location should there ever be a need to evacuate the school during the day. With the awareness of our police and fire departments, we continue to partner with New Hanover United Methodist Church-North Campus to serve as the reunification point in the event of an emergency evacuation. On the third day of school, we will have a fire drill at the end of the day and review these safety procedures with our students. We are excited to welcome our new school security officer to our team, Officer Victor, along with Officer Perez who serves as the BASD police chief. Please remember that all visitors who enter the building and need to go beyond the front office will need to bring their driver's license with them and scan in through our Raptor system.
We are making a change in our lunch room seating procedures to start the year. Students will be sitting at designated tables that align with the class period they have after lunch. We have learned that we need to start the year in a more organized and orderly manner in our lunch rooms. Students may choose their seats at the designated tables, but at the tables assigned to their classes. Once students understand the lunch procedures and exhibit appropriate cafeteria behaviors, we expect to move to open seating for the students. While this will be a change for our returning 7th and 8th grade students, we are confident that this will help reinforce the Bear Essentials of "Respect, Responsibility, and Safety," minimize inappropriate behaviors, and help our students start off the year in a positive structure.
Please continue to check transportation assignments over the weekend for any late changes that might occur. In the morning, please report to your bus stop earlier than assigned to wait for the bus. We will have plenty of staff members out and about at dismissal time to help our students find their buses to head home. Traditionally the first several days of school, students get home later than expected due to a delayed departure from school.
In conclusion, we want to thank our families for partnering with us throughout the school year. We will be doing our best to communicate the happenings at MSE and welcome your questions, support, and involvement in our students learning. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our teachers, counselors, administration, and/or office staff if we can assist in any way.
Regards,
Andrew T. Maoury

Car Line Arrival/ Dismissal Procedures
Please click HERE to review the Car Line Procedures. Highlights from these guidelines are as follows:
- Please do not arrive before the assigned pick up times.
- All cars must turn right onto Big Road/ 73 when exiting our campus.
- Utilize the entire length of the sidewalk when dropping off/ picking up students.
- Those students who require more time to get in and out of the car (those on crutches for example) should wait until to exit until all the way up to the end of the sidewalk. This allows others to safely pass them and to keep the line moving.
Dress Code Reminder
This is a reminder about dress code expectations. Full guidelines can be found by clicking HERE and scrolling to page 16. The most common and easily avoidable issues that we face and are not allowed are:
- No hats or wearing hoods while in the building
- No muscle shirts/tank-tops or revealing tops with "spaghetti" straps
- No shirts that are short and expose areas of the midriff (this is a significant issue during warm-weather days)
- No bottoms that are excessively short and/or expose parts of one's rear-end
- No pajamas or pajama like bottoms
ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
One of the greatest indicators of students' success in school is their attendance record. Please click HERE to review the attendance procedures at MSE.

Student Schedules
Students' schedules for the 2023-2024 year are accessible on-line. On student schedules, Health & Business are listed as half-trimester courses. Students will report to the course that is listed on top to start the first 30 days of the trimester. They will rotate then to the bottom course the last 30 days of the trimester. If a student is missing a course, or you see a scheduling error, please notify your child’s school counselor.
Period 11 is a new "place holder" this year in our schedules. It is not an actual period that meets during the day, but rather is a way for us to group students for various reasons. Do not be alarmed if there is or is not anything filled in for period 11 in a schedule.
