Walnut High School proudly announces that five of its members of the class of 2023 were named National Merit Scholarship Program Finalists on February 14, 2023. Samuel Chou, Kaleb Dy, Shani Su, Chelsea Yeh, and Jadon Zhu were all named as finalists.

After being named Semifinalists in the fall, these students were reviewed and evaluated based on their academic record, information about Walnut High School’s curricula and grading system, national test scores, school recommendations, information about their activities and leadership, and an essay each of them wrote.

They are among the top 1% of academically talented high school seniors from across the country who are in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $20 million that will be awarded in the spring.

Today after 4:00 pm, current Class of 2024, 2025, and 2026 Walnut High School students should have received an email from their GLC via Sign Up Genius with a link to select their summer registration appointment.

Parents, please coordinate with your student your preferred date and time! Preferably, sibling appointments should be selected on the same day. Sibling appointments will not be made for you.

Registration appointments will be held from July 5 - July 28.

IMPORTANT: Student schedules will be created in June based on their course request selections. There is no benefit or drawback to selecting the first summer or last appointments; please set the appointment time that best fits your schedule. Summer appointments are to review schedules, check for scheduling mistakes, and to ensure that your student is taking the most appropriate courses for their grade level and post-secondary plans. Teacher change requests will not be honored.

Last weekend our boys wrestled in the Central Division CIF Individual Championships at Yucaipa High School, while our girls wrestled at Corona High School. After two long days, both teams are coming home as CIF Team Runner-Ups. With 14 Southern Section Masters Qualifiers, we crowned 4 CIF BOYS CHAMPIONS & 4 CIF GIRLS CHAMPIONS.

Last night, the Walnut High Orchestras presented “Fantasy & Film” to a packed house featuring music selections from Harry Potter, Encanto, Frozen, Coco, Enchanted, and How to Train Your Dragon! An incredible magical night for everyone in attendance. Thank you to Band Directors Corey Wicks & Katie Takahashi for their hard work!

Congrats to our amazing FBLA students who earned top honors at the Inland Section Leadership Conference at Los Osos High School last weekend.

• 16 third-place wins
• 24 State Leadership Qualifiers.

Read through the material and see which program might be the right fit for you. This is also where you can pre-register for summer school. Registering is not a guarantee for the class, but a way to set up classes.

Summer Session Dates for 2023 are June 5th, 2023 - July 13th, 2023

(Classes are held Monday - Thursday unless noted otherwise). Time each day is 7:30am to 1:00pm. Teacher and room assignments will be posted the week before summer school begins.

Important Dates to Remember:

• June 19th is an observed holiday for Juneteenth
• Classes this week will be Tuesday, June 20th - Friday, June 23rd
• 4th of July is an observed holiday
• Classes this week will be Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, July 3, 5, 6, & 7.

Peer Counseling at Walnut High School is a class and a school service. The class is designed to accomplish three things:

1) To train the Peer Counselors in the proper procedure and skills for helping high school students help themselves.

2) To help students develop a new understanding of themselves and help them to achieve personal growth.

3) To make students aware of helping professions that they may be interested in entering after high school and the issues that those professions deal with.

The Academic Design Program (ADP) is a standards-based, integrated approach to learning. Using the Design-Based Learning methodology, Social Science and English are brought together as the students work through real-world problems in search of real-world solutions. Students will engage with the content through creativity and collaboration in order to build a mind-body connection with the material they learn. Happy Black History Month! It’s essential to know the past to help create a better future. Our Black Student Union decided to make a video sharing Black Stories.

In the Spring of 2024, Walnut High School will be evaluated for accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). WASC accreditation shows our school meets high standards for operating a quality program. WASC accreditation is an ongoing cycle, including an initial self-study process, creating a schoolwide plan, and hosting evaluation visits. An accredited school is a statement to the broader community and the stakeholders that it is a trustworthy institution for student learning and committed to ongoing improvement.

It is imperative that we hear from all stakeholders, teachers, students, parents, community members, support, and district staff, as we set improvement goals through this reflective process. To reach that goal, we have created an electronic parent survey. Please take the time to complete the survey below and assist us in setting plans to make WHS the best school possible.

Walnut Valley Water District’s annual High School Media Contest is now open! Students have the opportunity to win a cash prize by creating their own media entry sharing their innovative ways and tips to save/reuse water within their community following the theme “Be a Water Saving Hero”. Deadline to submit media entries is Monday March 6th. Please see attached for the approved flyer by WVUSD.

• Winners will receive $100, $150, $200, or $250
• Qualified media entries can receive bonus points if posted on Instagram Reels or TikTok – MUST tag and follow @WVWDH2O on Instagram and TikTok

Students will be subject to disciplinary action when a student has been absent from class without a valid excuse. All absences must be cleared within one (1) school day after the last date of absence. The preferred method for clearing absences is via parent/guardian phone calls to the attendance office.

Parents must call the attendance office the day their student is absent as early as possible or within two school days of an absence, at the latest. Messages may also be left. Please clearly state the student's first and last name, guardian name, dates or class periods absent, and reason for the absence.

A reminder email and robocall are sent to the parent on the day of the absence. If uncleared, the office will make a courtesy call the following day.

When parents do not call within the two school days, the absences are counted as truant and referred to the GLC. We will not accept late phone calls.

Habit #4 Think Win-Win Think Win-Win is an attitude toward life, a mental frame of mind that says I can win and so can you. It’s not me or you, it’s both of us. Think Win-win is the foundation for getting along well with other people. It begins with the belief that we are all equal, that no one is inferior or superior to anyone else, and no one really needs to be. This short video encapsulates the ideas of Think Win-Win and compels us to take on this point of view in 2023.

Due to many problems and safety issues we DO NOT allow student lunches to be delivered anywhere on campus.

Food, drinks or other items are NOT to be passed to students through the fence. This is strictly prohibited.

Outside Food Delivery Services such as UBER Eats/Door Dash is strictly prohibited. Food will be confiscated if deliveries are dropped off.

We understand the importance of student nutrition but we encourage students to either use the free lunch at school or bring their lunch from home.

During summer registration, students and their guardians watched the rules and expectations video for the upcoming school year. If you did not have a chance to watch it, please take a minute to view the video to help you be successful this year!

Parents: One thing you will notice this year are tardy or cell phone detention automated emails. If your child was issued a detention for excessive tardies or a cell phone violation, you will get an email with information on the detention they need to serve.

Students must attend every class, every day, and be on time. In order to receive daily credit, students are to bring all necessary materials to class. Students will not be excused from class to get materials. Homework and class assignments are to be completed on time and to the best of the student’s ability. Only behaviors befitting the learning environment are acceptable. Students are to comply with all reasonable requests of any staff member. Dress code will be enforced.
