Surfside Shark Bites
Week of August 28-September 1, 2023
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Hello Surfside families!
Thank you for another great week at Surfside! We are grateful that the weather has cooled off a bit, this helped our high school soccer team with their practices in the afternoons.
We are now assembling our School Site Council members and members of our English Language Advisory Committee. Please take a minute and place your votes for members of these important elements in our school. Links to the voting form are included in this edition of Shark Bites.
Lastly, please take a moment to review your student's grades and attendance in Aeries. If one or both of these elements are not what you expect them to be, now is the time to contact the teachers for information and review the next steps with your students.
Have a great weekend and remember that Monday is a non-school day for students.
Thank you,
Eric Frandsen

School Site Council
The School Site Council (SSC) is comprised of 12 members: six school team members and six community members. Staff members include the school principal, one non-teaching staff member, and four teachers. Other members include a combination of parents/guardians, students, and/or community members. The SCC develops and oversees Surfside's School Plan for Student Achievement, which includes the planned actions and expenditures to support student outcomes and overall performance. The School Plan aligns with the actions included in the District's Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which lays out goals for the entire district.

Nom Nom
Dear Families,
Enjoy the Holiday Weekend! No In-Person or Virtual classes will be held on Monday, September 4, 2023.
Work Turn-in Reminder: Please submit any work completed on Unit 1 by September 8, 2023, so we can complete attendance credit records. For those who have completed their Unit 1 work, Unit 2 will be available in the office.
Questions about what to complete in each unit before turning in it? Please reach out to your Supervising Teachers. What is an appropriate amount of work varies by student, so some students may find most or all of the packet work possible, while many others will find it overwhelming. This would be the same in a traditional classroom setting. Your teachers can help prioritize work that most benefits your student’s progress and helps avoid worksheet fatigue and ensures program progress. There are general guidelines within the Parent Guide, however, your Supervising Teachers love to help customize your Independent Study pathway. Our goal is to create an educational experience that fosters a love of learning and creativity.
DIAGNOSTIC ALERT! There are two weeks left in the Beginning of the Year Diagnostic window. Setting goals of completing a small percentage of the Diagnostic each day truly helps to meet this mandatory requirement of Independent Study and makes it less stressful for your child. Please try not to wait until the last week and have your child rush through it, as it helps select the lessons to match their understanding.
Thank you all for an amazing start to the school year!
Kelly Crouthamel & Anthony Madsen, K-5th Supervising Teachers
New Families & Confused Families
Remember, we are happy to meet with families virtually or in-person to answer questions and help you get the most out of your Independent Journey! We are here for you!!
Worth Repeating …
iReady Helpful Tips-
You must access iReady from the Rapid Identity/student dashboard.
You will not be able to login through iReady Connect, because Oceanside Unified uses a Single Sign-on Serve.
If you need any help with your students username/password for Rapid Identity, please email your Supervising Teacher. K-2 passwords are all defaulted to your students birthday in MMDDYYYY format.
You will not see any assignments/lessons until after the first Diagnostic. The lessons you will see after the diagnostic will be personalized for your student.
If you click on the Reading the first time, it might say there are no assignments. Click the math and it will say the same thing. Then, click on the Reading again and it should pull up the diagnostics to complete.
At any time, however, you can find all the digital lessons, videos etc, by clicking “Math", and then the icon at the bottom of the screen that says “bookshelf.”
The Diagnostic window opens on Monday, August 21, 2023. The Diagnostics MUST be carefully completed by September 15, 2023. Please plan to work on the Diagnostics for 20-30 minutes daily. Having students work on their Diagnostics for a small prescribed amount of time daily encourages accurate results and helps students avoid Diagnostic fatigue. For more information on the Diagnostics, please refer to the parent guide.
Other Reminders
Please don’t forget to join your Google Classroom! Once in Rapid Identity, click on the green/yellow GC icon on the app screen or at the bottom task bar. It looks like an old chalkboard. Click on the correct grade level Google Classroom, then continue, I’m a student, then Join. Within the GC main feed you will find the virtual meeting times (including the meeting link,) links to the parent resource page, and a link to the Parent Guide.
Mr. Madsen is excited to share his love of reading with Wednesday Virtual Read-Alouds. K-5th students can join in at 8:00am for The One & Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and/or Danny, Champion of the World by Roald Dahl at 8:35am.
All the Best,
Kelly Crouthamel & Anthony Madsen, your K-5th Supervising Teachers

OUSD Messageing
OUSD messages families using a platform called Blackboard Communications. This allows teachers and staff to send an email, text or voice message directly to the email address or phone number you have listed in Aeries. It’s important that all the adults in your student’s life have updated contact information in Aeries so everyone can receive important messages from your student’s school.
You no longer need to download any third party apps to receive messages from OUSD. The only district supported app that families should download is the OUSD app.Check your email or spam folder. Your login and password for the app have been sent from
noreply@parentlink.net to the email you have in Aeries.
