News & Notes
- Birthday Treats *New for the 23-24 school year* - Teachers often have multiple student birthdays within a week and the frequent sugary treats can disrupt student learning. Many students also have allergies and are unable to eat the shared goodies. In an effort to be healthier and more inclusive, birthday treats such as cupcakes, donuts, and other candies/food will no longer be allowed. Instead, consider donating a book to your child's classroom or gifting a class set of pencils.
- For student safety: please remind all students to cross Rock Creek Blvd at our designated crossing areas.
- If your child is going to be absent, please call the attendance line 503-844-1363 prior to the start of the day
- If you have changes to the way your child is getting home - please call the office the day prior or by 1:00pm the day of so that we can ensure a smooth transition for your child at dismissal time
- Arrival: In the interest of student safety, we are asking all families to give hugs and loves at arrival outside the building including on the first day of school.
- We are a closed campus during the school day. All perimeter gates remain locked from 7:15-2:15. We ask that students and families wait to use the playground until after dismissal so we can ensure all students are where they need to be.
HSD's Community Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC)
The Community Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC) is currently accepting applications for both Community Member and Student positions. This Committee serves as a resource to the Board and Superintendent in setting the direction for long-range curriculum development and assisting in the development of the schools' curriculum and instructional programs. Committee responsibilities include reviewing curriculum, instructional programs, proposed new courses, and study team recommendations and reporting findings and recommendations to the Board of Directors for discussion and action. Members of the CCAC consider a wide range of curriculum and program development topics. Committee members are appointed to two-year terms by the Board of Directors. Candidates must reside within the boundaries of the Hillsboro School District, and be available to attend committee meetings, which are conducted on the first Monday evening of each month, November through June. Committee members are also invited to participate in sub-committees and special projects as opportunities arise.

Safety Drills
Here is a brief description of our safety drills -
- Lockdown is when there is a suspected threat inside the building requiring that all rooms housing students, staff and visitors be locked. All exterior doors should be secured. All staff members are empowered to activate a lockdown if they witness a threat.
- Lockout or Secure is when there is a suspected threat outside the building, requiring that all building entrances be locked and secure. Classrooms that open directly to the outside and not to an interior hallway should lock their door and not let anyone in or out. All staff members are empowered to activate a lockout of they witness a threat.
- Earthquake or Evacuation - when you feel the ground shake, keep calm and immediately take protective actions: Duck, Cover, Hold on and then evacuate when shaking stops.
- Reverse Evacuation is used to help get students and staff back into the building when it is dangerous to remain outside.
- Hold is used when the hallways need to be clear of people to deal with a situation that requires a level of privacy.
- Shelter in Place is a short-term measure implemented when there is a need to isolate students and staff from the outdoor environment or to prevent injury or exposure to airborne contaminants. Additional steps needed depend on the specific hazard. Possible hazards may include but are not limited to a wind storm, earthquake or hazardous chemical spill.
Breakfast & Lunch Accounts
This school year we will continue to have charged and free and reduced meals. If your family would like to apply for free or reduced cost meals, we have forms in the office or you can find the application and additional information here.

Important General Arrival/Dismissal Information
- Please adhere to our signange at the front and back of the building that says "students only beyond this point" This allows staff to ensure the safety of your students at all times.
- Walker and Car Pick Up are different modes of picking up your student. Please try and stick with the mode of pickup you communicated to your child and their teacher to avoid confusion for all.
- The car pick up line can get long. Please be patient and do not park in the gravel lot and walk on to campus through the parking lot. If you have told your child's teacher that you will be picking them up by car, your student WILL NOT be in the front of the building waiting for you. Please wait in the car pick up line as planned.
- If you are picking your child up via car, please use last years sign or make a new one to signal to staff whom you are picking up. The sign can include the teachers last name and your child's first name/last initial. We will work to get you permanent signage within the first week of school.
- Class starts promptly at 7:45 with students being dismissed from the gym between 7:35 and 7:40. If your child plans to eat breakfast, please arrive with enough time for your child to eat breakfast and get to class on time.
Arrival Procedures
Student arrival time is between 7:15 and 7:45 // Class begins promptly at 7:45
Regardless of mode of arrival (parent drop off via car, bus, walker)
- ALL K-6 students will enter the front doors and proceed to the cafeteria for breakfast or the gym if they are not eating breakfast.
- Check out the Arrival/Dismissal Reminder Video HERE
Dismissal Procedures
If you pick up your child in a car, please watch the video HERE and read below for directions.
Display sign on your passenger side window/dashboard.
You must pull up as far as possible in the pick up lane - remain in your vehicle.
Once your child is securely in your car, you may either proceed forward and out of the lot or merge into the thru lane and out of the lot
If you walk to campus or park to walk and pick up your child, please read below for the location you need to go to.
K-2 parents must come up and wait at the flag pole at the front of the school. A staff member will release your student(s) to you.
Please avoid putting staff in a compromising position by trying to take your child from them while they are bringing their line of students out.
You must come to the designated location to get your child. This is for the safety of our students.
3-6 students are released from classrooms independently. If needed, they can meet their siblings up near the front of the building where K-2 students are waiting.
If your chid rides a bus
- Busing information for all students is now available on the HSD Transportation MyBus Page. You will need your students ID number and birthdate to access the system. Please check the site often as route times may be adjusted as new students register for school.
- Pick-up and drop-off times at the beginning of the year reflect the best estimate based on many variables such as traffic and road conditions. During the school year, as students are added or deleted from the routes, the actual pick-up and drop-off times will change.
Important Note for Dismissal - Car Pickup
