Kia ora e te whanau

Today we saw our wonderful Year Thirteen students show that with resilience and a positive spirit, you can still celebrate in style … despite the limitations they have suffered through Covid-19 restrictions and the lockdown. For Formal Friday they dressed up in their finery, enjoyed music, speeches, a formal buffet lunch and had their photos taken so that they could end the year with a recognition of their time spent together as a year group and the achievements and experiences that they have shared. Many thanks go to Mrs. Sarah Shaw and Mrs. Elanor Boyce who managed to prepare this event for the students whilst maintaining their teaching load and the preparation for NCEA externals with their students. Thanks also to the many teachers who jumped on board and came to school also dressed for the event. It is amazing how they polish up with a little encouragement! Staff Retirement

It was with some sorrow that this week we received Chris Burn's resignation from Trident as he heads into retirement in 2022. Chris started working at Trident on 14th September 1983, so has served the school and the wider Trident community for over 38 years which is an astonishing achievement in education. He has changed the lives of countless students and shown them opportunities they would never have dreamed existed. His rugby tours of the USA were pivotal for students – teaching them the value of hard work bringing huge rewards as they fundraised for three years before the tour. Then the tour itself presented students who had never left New Zealand before (some not even leaving the Eastern Bay before) with an unimaginable sudden understanding of what lies out there in the wider world. Chris will not be leaving the school entirely, in that he will continue to maintain the fleet of vans that he has built up for the school.

In addition, this year we will also farewell Alan Spence who has been such an important part of Trident’s music history and success for the last twenty years. Our school band and jazz band have been constant in achieving awards and recognition throughout New Zealand and he has set so many young musicians on the path to a musical career. Alan worked tirelessly with the Arts Drama department every two years to support the school production and ensured that the music on the night was spectacular. In the last five years Alan turned his sights on NCEA scholarships in Music and had significant success through his students being awarded scholarship or on several memorable occasions Outstanding Scholarship. The whole Spence family has contributed to Trident’s musical success and they will be sorely missed, though Alan plans to help support our brass instrument students next year through the itinerant music programme run through the school.

Alongside Alan Spence, Yvonne Osborne has also been a longstanding stalwart of the music world at Trident and she too is closing the piano lid one final time at the end of this term. We are grateful for her dedication to life at the school and are pleased to know she will continue to support the itinerant programme at the school with her excellent tutoring skills.

And another long-serving teacher to leave us this year is Marc Camburn. After eleven years with the PE department Marc is moving on to a supervisory role at DOC – a new adventure which he is very excited to take up. He has been an excellent PE teacher, a wonderful rugby coach and also a dedicated trainer for our Get-to-Go teams. Beyond these responsibilities he is also a friend of many of the staff here and will be missed for his good humour and his ability to help staff come together at social events and build a community.

We will farewell them all at Junior Prize-Giving and I am hopeful that by then, we may be able to invite all our whanau to join in the celebrations of the commitment these teachers have made to the education of so many.

Outstanding Teacher Award – The National Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Jaime-Lee Coffey for her award from the National Spelling Bee. Jaime-Lee is one of four teachers across New Zealand recognized for their outstanding support of the Spelling Bee. We are proud of this recognition and the work Jaime-Lee does in this field which supports our students to develop their literacy and vocabulary acquisition.

EBPHA Covid-19 Information Session

Yesterday the Eastern Bay Primary Health team turned up to answer questions that students had about the vaccination programme. I was proud of the junior students who attended to ask some really good questions – “What happens if you already have Covid-19 and then you get the vaccine?” This is where students’ curiosity and knowledge seeking has an opportunity to be heard – in a safe space with experts in the field.

Please find our 2022 Prospectus - Ngā Tapuwae - by clicking the button below where you can read a collection of narratives that share journeys through Trident, from those who know us best. Through these journeys we have captured our people, our values and our school culture.

Every Year 9 and Year 10 student has been issued with a Study Timetable in their Google Classroom to help them prepare for their exams on 26 November - 1 December. We suggest that parents sit down with their student and fill in five study times for each of the four core subjects; English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Be specific about the topic you will study, for example in Mathematics you could write “Complete Algebra worksheets”. Make a realistic plan and stick to it. Subject teachers will provide your student with suitable exam preparation activities, this study timetable helps you plan when to complete these activities. Creating an exam study timetable with your student allows whanau/families to know how much study their student should be completing.

• Wednesday 17th November - Year 11 Prize Giving (Yr 9, 10, 12 & 13 students will be released at 1:20pm to go home. The library will be available for bus students)

• Thursday 18th November - Year 12 + Year 13 Prize Giving (No school for all other students)
• Friday 19th November - Teacher Only Day
• Friday 26th November - Wednesday 1st December - Junior Exams
• Thursday 2nd December - NCEA Accord Teacher Only Day

On Thursday our Service Academy participated in the Armistice Day Commemoration where Zavier De Vries spoke on behalf of the Academy. We are proud of all of our students and it is great to see them representing themselves, their whanau and Trident at occasions such as this with pride and honour.

On Saturday we have a group of our 2020 GBI group fundraising for scholarships for the 2022 GBI class. They will be doing a beach clean up starting at the surf club and working their way down to West End.

Sponsoring them to do this are:

The scholarship will allow at least one student the ability to attend GBI, who would otherwise not be able to go due to financial reasons. Students can apply for this scholarship through the GBI programme.

We thank our generous sponsors and the GBI class for their commitment to enabling other students to have the same fantastic experience they did.

We congratulate Libby Miller on receiving the University of Otago Poutama Scholarship. The Poutama Scholarships enables a number of Year 12 Māori students to travel to the University of Otago to participate in a week-long Hands-On-at-Otago programme in January. Recipients of the Poutama Scholarships have been selected based on their all-round academic ability, a school report demonstrating their attitude to learning, and a character reference.

Libby is excited about the week-long experience and is hoping she can get into the Performing Art course for the week. She is looking forward to meeting new people and seeing what it is like to study and live in Dunedin. At this stage Libby would like to follow in the steps of her Drama teacher, Mrs Robb, and train in the Performing Arts to become a Drama teacher.

The scholarship Libby has received will cover costs for:

• Return airfares to Dunedin

• Hands-On at Otago Programme (Workshops / Tuition)

• Light Entertainment

We wish Libby all the very best for the course and hope it will continue to inspire her to follow her passion. We will share Libby’s experience on her return to Trident in 2022.

Futures Academy for 2022

Mrs Haines and Ms Wildash are currently interviewing students for the Futures Academy 2022. There are some exciting new courses including boat handling, early childhood education, game design, computer security and creative arts, as well as our regular programs, construction, automotive, agriculture, boat building, engineering, hair and beauty, IT, driving, hospitality, tourism etc. Please see Ms Wildash or Mrs Haines if you are interested.

Tertiary Study for 2022

Students can see Ms Wildash in the Careers Hub for support completing applications. Students should also check out www.moneyhub.co.nz and www.studyspy.ac.nz.

Student Allowance and Loans

Year 13 students who have turned 18 may be eligible for a student allowance, please see Ms McGowan for more information. Students needing to set up their studylink accounts for 2022 should see Ms McGowan for assistance.

Students requiring first aid certificates.

Year 13 students who require first aid certificates for their tertiary studies eg: nursing, please let Ms McGowan in the Careers Hub know. We can help you to complete this course this year.

Cadetship Opportunity

WSP Whakatane has a cadetship opportunity for a school leaver interested in a career in engineering, architectural technology or surveying. OVERVIEW

Our residential camp has been designed to target personal growth and social awareness, developing skills for life without electronic devices! NO CELL PHONES. Qualities such as a sense of responsibility and a purpose in life will be nurtured. This programme will build self-confidence and self-esteem through challenging outdoor activities, team work, environmental projects and daily chores. The camp also develops self-management skills as it progresses through the 4 weekly themes of Whakarangatira (Self Management), Mahi Tahi (Team work), Manaakitanga (Kindness, Generosity, Support), Mana Motuhake (Independence and Autonomy).

ACTIVITIES

A range of outdoor pursuits ranging from Waka Ama, SUP boarding, Sea Kayaking, Kayak Surfing, Sailing, Coasteering, Fishing, Snorkelling, Tramping, Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Navigation, Camp Craft, and a High Ropes course. Environmental education and authentic outdoor projects are to be expected when resting from the outdoor pursuits listed above.

PROJECTS

Local environmental enhancement projects, tree planting, track maintenance, a day visit to a local Junior School and environmental based projects with DOC and private landowners.

FOUR EXPEDITIONS

Including one gathering kai moana, two overnight and a 4 day expedition to finish the camp.

Students will be expected to: write letters home on a weekly basis, read books, keep an extensive journal during personal reflection time, be involved with multiple environmental projects and work towards a final presentation. During their time at GBI the students will be required to work cooperatively as a team as they organise their day to day living.

Independence and life skills will be encouraged as students take responsibility for personal hygiene, meal planning, cooking, clean and tidy living quarters, washing etc. They will assist the community with maintaining and harvesting from the garden and sea, gathering kai moana to share with each other.

Trident High School has opted into the government’s Optional Donations Scheme in 2021-2022

Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community.

The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.

SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
